★★★★★
It's just your atypical love story - a guy (he wants to fit in), a girl (she wants to be noticed), and the supercomputer inside the guy's head that tells him what to do (it wants to take over the world!)
The musical follows the story of self-proclaimed loser, Jeremy Heere (Scott Folan) as he attempts to navigate high school, along with his best friend Michael (Blake Patrick Anderson), avoid his school bully Rich (James Hameed), and gain the attention of his crush Christine (Miracle Chance).
Everything changes when he’s offered the chance to take a pill sized supercomputer called a SQUIP (Stewart Clarke). Jeremy now has to deal with being thrust into the high school elite, with popular kids Chloe (Millie O’Connell), Brooke (Eloise Davies), Jake (Miles Paloma), Jenna (Renee Lamb) and Rich, tension with his father (Christopher Fry), and a plot to take over the world.
This production follows much the same script as the Broadway version, with a few smaller changes throughout. The song 'Upgrade' from the Original production was cut down massively when the show moved to Broadway, and Act One finale 'Loser, Geek, Whatever' was added. The London production takes the best from both of these, and closes the first act with a brilliant combination of character depth and foreboding.
The entire leading cast of the 2020 London production returned for it’s new limited run at the Shaftesbury Theatre, and every one of them blew me away with their performances. Even with audiences being heavily limited due to social distancing, the energy in the room was electric from start to finish. Blake Patrick Anderson’s rendition of 'Michael In The Bathroom' has somehow gotten even better since last year, and had me nearly in tears. Another highlight would have to be 'The Pitiful Children', Stewart Clarke makes a wonderfully chilling SQUIP throughout, and this really was his moment to shine.
