I’m having a MAVIS MOMENT over here.
I have very little regret around missing concerts. And as much as I’d like to have experienced Phish at the Sphere, the concert that I really wish I’d made more of an effort to attend was Mavis Staples’ 85th Birthday Party. This woman walks with a positive glow around her that I’ve been lucky enough to interact with on a number of occasions. And it’s been an honor to see that glow transferred to others so easily through her song and personal authenticity. It is kindness like hers that can keep us together.

When I relocated to the Asheville region to construct a recording studio in Marshall, NC, I was still young and fresh as an audio engineer. It was in that studio that we recorded the first episodes of Local Color on WNCW 88.7, one of which included Malcolm Holcombe. I remember thinking, “Man, he has got the magical stuff” as a songwriter but I also recall attributing that thought to my youth and lack of exposure to great musicians. I kept thinking all musicians were going to be like this. Over 20 years later, I’ve worked with a wide palette of talented and hardworking songwriters, and I stil have only found a VERY FEW who have had his gift. Although I didn’t have the same personal connection that many in AVL did, whenever I did live sound for him, it was always an easy, intriguing, and light hearted night. Thank you for your contributions and fly on.

It was an honor to watch Caitlin Clark break the NCAA women’s basketball scoring record. it was super impressive how she did it by sinking a 3 pointer from the LOGO! Keep setting goals high and reaching for dreams.

I went to see Charles Lampten play for Western Carolina University and was treated to seeing how much some players can make an impact on the game in ways that don’t show on the stat sheets (setting solid picks, rotating passes, affecting opponents shots, etc). I was also present for Tre Jackson scoring his 1000th point as a Catamount!!
