Sea turtle Season 101….
When sea turtle eggs are found too close to the water’s edge or in imminent danger of being lost.
What can we do?
A very small percentage of nest may be moved, if approved by the state guidelines.
In this case, each egg will be carefully removed from the cavity and placed in a container or bucket in its original orientation.
Once all eggs are safely removed, a new egg chamber is dug mimicking the same depth and width as the original one dug by the nesting turtle, in a safer location.
The eggs are then placed carefully in the new chamber one at a time in the same order as the original nest. An egg for DNA is then taken.
The nest is then covered and staked off.
This conservation work for sea turtles in Emerald Isle is authorized by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
(ES Permit 25ST13).
