Today in 1994 Biggie released his classic “Ready to Die.” Widely regarded as one of the best Hip-Hip albums of all time, the 13th of September ironically is the same day that West Coast rapper Tupac died. Although 2Pac died two years after this release, the two are inextricably tied together forever as leaders in the East Coast Vs West Coast beef.

“Ready to Die” features production from Bad Boy founder Sean "Puffy" Combs, Easy Mo Bee, Chucky Thompson, DJ Premier, and Lord Finesse and others. #

Singles from the project were led by “Juicy, followed by “Big Poppa / Warning" and “One More Chance"

What’s your favorite single from Ready to Die? RIP Biggie!

On this day (September 12) in 1999, Lauryn Hill’s album ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ debuted at #1 in the United States. It sold over 423,000 copies in its first week after getting advance radio play with two non-label-sanctioned singles, "Lost Ones" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You."

The title of the album was inspired by the book The Mis-Education of the Negro (1933) by Carter G. Woodson and The Education of Sonny Carson, a film and autobiographical novel.

Combining R&B, Doo-W*p, Pop, Hip-Hop, and Reggae sounds Lauryn Hill recorded the project in late 1997 through June 1998 at Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica. D'Angelo, Carlos Santana, Mary J. Blige and the then-unknown John Legend all made appearances on the project.

The first official single released from the album was "Doo W*p (That Thing)", which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. During the 1999 Grammy Awards Hill became the first woman to win five times in one night after winning the awards for Album of the Year, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best New Artist. Lauryn Hill has not released an album since this breakout debut.

Today in 1987 Peter Tosh was killed in a home robbery at the age of 42.   After his work with Bob Marley and the Wailers Peter Tosh established himself as a solo artist with his own albums on Rolling Stones Records, Columbia Records and EMI.
Peter Tosh often pushed the boundaries politically within his music to inspire real change across the globe.  A true devotee to Rastafari, Tosh was an opponent to South African apartheid, the prohibition of cannabis and the colonization of African countries.
Tosh kept his militant views while also hoping to make music that appealed across the world.  While with the Wailers, Peter Tosh co-wrote many songs including  "Get Up, Stand Up."
As a solo artist he released seven studio albums including Legalize It (1976), Equal RIghts (1977), Bush Doctor (1978) Mystic Man (1979), Wanted Dread & Alive (1981) Mama Africa (1983) and No Nuclear War (1987).  Tosh's last album in 1987 earned him a Grammy Award at the 1988 Grammy's for Best Reggae Album.
One day after coming home, armed gunmen held Tosh and others hostage. One of the gunmen was a man who Tosh tried to help get a job after he got out of a lengthy jail sentence.  At some point in act of frustration after not being able to find any money the gunmen randomly opened fire shooting Peter Tosh twice in the head.
Herbalist Wilton "Doc" Brown and DJ Jeff 'Free I' Dixon also died. Others in the house included Tosh's common law wife Andrea Marlene Brown, Free I's wife Yvonne ("Joy"), Tosh's drummer Carlton "Santa" Davis and musician Michael Robinson.

Rest in Peace Peter Tosh! Thank you!

Today Will Smith made his debut on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” back in 1990. The show would go on to have 148 episodes over 6 seasons making an impact on millions of television viewers.

Featuring a host of celebrities, entertainers and athletes over the years, the show often played on Will's West Philadelphia background clashing in various ways with the upper class world of the Bel-Air residing Banks family.

Also featuring Will's uncle Phil, Aunt Vivian and their children, Hilary, Carlton and Ashley the show depicted a Black family in America in 1990’s and tackled a host of issues.

“There would be very powerful ideas under the jokes and the comedy,” Smith said during the reunion. “It’s as relevant today as it was 30 years ago, unfortunately.”

Most recently the family reunited bringing back all of the living cast members to revisit various times on the show.
