(SAG sends 'em out on DVDs and hard searched to locate a DVD player!). ANYWAYS--

My Hyperbolic Film Review:
Well into “Poor Things” and although adequately interesting, and devastatingly gorgeously, masterfully styled I was uninspired to keep watching it and was just about to resignedly file it away to the “Trying Too Hard Files” trying too hard to be stylistically what I would call “The New Age Art Nouveau of the 21st Century;” referencing/sampling the likes of David Lynch, Truffaut, Hitchcock, Fellini, Araki and the witty & quircky Paul Thomas Anderson.
Art direction is not original but nevertheless sumptuous. Especially special about the colorized parts of the film - - not unlike previous Art films that saturate the color of the colors, colorization of this film appears to be filtered by an unusually deep red, rendering it hyper-nostalgic, hyper-rich, and therefore hyper real.
What changed my poor opinion of the film?
Unleashed by director Yorgos Lanthimos,
Emma Stone & Mark Ruffalo devour a daring & ribald script to deliver tour de force performances to match the exquisite art direction!
Award season is on and their names are no doubt whispered in circles that matter. J’adore ca! C’est tout!

"It's A Wonderful Life" tonight or not? I had forgotten how the George Bailey character was so enthusiastic and endearing. On a "wrong" day for me (a bad attitude day), those old fashioned traits (values?) just seem better done than said. Donna Reed , though, perfect all American girl. !

This morning at our Weekly Energizing meeting of minds to train our minds to kickstart our brains to create new neuro pathways to support whatever it is that you individually believe as your own Reality.
10am Sunday Meditation at the historic Agnes
Pelton house & painting studio in the CC Cove
(F Street /Agnes Pelton Way). The hour begins with group meditation followed by a Silence for individual practice , and culminates with a sound energy “sound bath” with my Tibetan crystal bowls to balance and enhance your chakra energy centers.
If you’ve never meditated before, come and join us for a welcoming first meditation experience. If you have a regular meditation practice you will still appreciate this company of friends for the combined energy and perhaps you might care to share one of your own meditations.

JUPITER! I was terrible in Mathematics but somewhat fascinated with Science (often had to know Math to “do” the Science experiments) and I remembered from a Science lesson from over 60 years ago that regarding plants & stars and how we can discern with the naked eye- - stars appear to be blinking and planets do not. I first identified Venus, the itsy bitty teeny weeny solid white, not-twinkling light taking up its own space …in “outer” space, Plucked out with my naked eyes from the vast Hawaiian skies , almost every night right next-ish to the moon!
Throughout my aforementioned 60 years Venus was my so-called lodestar of consistent, never diminishing presence.
Then the other night I looked up from my pool side and notice a bright bright bright light that at first I thought it was moving so maybe it was an airplane? After scrutinizing for a few deeply concentrated efforts I deduce from my 60 years ago Scientific Observation that that not-moving/not twinkling spot must be a planet!!! Blah blah blah so anyway I walked out to the alley on other side of the pool where the murals are and a few neighbors are also in the street and after considering & scrutinizing and guessing every possible truth-of-the-matter, my neighbor across the street, who teaches Science at the middle school, confirms that it is a planet, the planet JUPITER!
But I digress.

So I was going to tell you what happened when I shaved my head during the 1977 Broadway revival of "The King and I" and Yul Bryner fired me but first, let me set it up--
In the Summer of 1976, my first Broadway show and the National Tour of “Pacific Overtures” had just closed and I was killing time in LA to start the Yul Brynner revival of “The King & I” back in New York.
One afternoon in West Hollywood, Claude Thompson, the legendary dancer/choreographer/ master teacher and one of my early mentors invited me to dinner with him and Geoffrey Holder, who was visiting from New York. Entertainment Industry friends of my generation and Boomer Generation Adjacent folks will know and remember Geoffrey Holder for his elegant six-foot-six stature, his distinctive shaved head (a rarity for the time), his mellifluous deep-pitched Trinidadian accented voice, and for his innumerable dance/theater/costume design/painting /choreographing/acting credits. He was also notably the pitch man for 7-Up, and his formerly ubiquitous television commercials for “the UN-Cola!” (He designed the costumes and won the Tony for Best Direction of “The Wiz,” ferchristsakes!)
Claude and Geoffrey were old friends from that generation of black dancers and choreographers that emerged from 1950’s New York , whose black dance-world contemporaries included Alvin Ailey, Carmen DeLavallade, and Arthur Mitchell; during the time of Martha Graham, Jerome Robbins, Lester Horton, and Jose’ Limon. But I digress.

“El Viejo”
- - Jimmy Gonzalez is the first elder painted on our mural, “ Mayores of Cathedral City Cove,” and
I took this photo before I met him. I used to see him walking up and down our Chuperosa Lane Murals Path just about everyday. Sometimes and more recently he couldn’t make it back home and his family & friends, my neighbors, me , & even Luis Fausto, our artist we commissioned to paint portraits in the alley would take him by the arm to walk him home to his compound & house.
He always had a huge smile on his face. Always.
We found out he died today. As saddening as that is, I want to think that that portrait will be his legacy- - the memory of his friendliness & welcoming spirit was captured in his smiling portrait on our elders mural and we will all have that portrait to remember him in many years to come.

The ceramic mosaic mural “The Lady of Chuperosa Lane” by Peter Palladino, is the first mosaic and depicts our fictional Saint of the ‘Hood. They’re both watching over us now…and Agnes Pelton & all her friends, too.
