YOU ARE INVITED TO MEET COACH SID EDWARDS — Coach Sid Edwards will discuss his candidacy for Mayor-President at the Chamber of Commerce of East Baton Rouge Parish at 12 noon Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Café Américain, 7521 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge. Edwards was a surprise entry into the race Friday morning, and his candidacy has already generated a lot of enthusiasm. He appears to be the best known Republican in the race, and some pundits predict he will run first in the Nov. 5 primary.

A groundswell of support has greeted the coach. Many have cited his superior leadership and organizational skills, along with his ability to inspire and motivate others as important traits for a future Mayor-President.

The legendary coach has more than 44 years in his profession, mostly as head football coach. He also served for a dozen years as Athletic Director for the Central Community School System. Coach Sid is the winningest coach in the Baton Rouge area and one of the most successful in Louisiana. Over the years, he has won two State Football Championships and one State Basketball Championship. He was named Coach of the Year in Louisiana 5A football. In 2000, he was named NFL Coach of the Year after being nominated by Warwick Dunn. He coached for 10 years at Catholic High, seven years at Redemptorist, 17 years at Central High, and one year at Jesuit in New Orleans and at Menard in Alexandria. He is currently head football coach at Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge. Coach Sid also coached youth leagues in football, basketball, and softball.

A total of 24 of his former athletes and assistant coaches have gone on to be head coaches, mostly in the Baton Rouge area.

The coach said he has spent a lifetime trying to help young people in East Baton Rouge Parish be successful in life and avoid the pitfalls. He said his candidacy for Mayor-President is a continuation of that commitment. "I want to make sure our children and grandchildren have a parish where tthey can live, raise a family, and work that is safe, clean, beautiful, growing, vibrant, and successful!"

His main issues will be public safety and crime, solving our traffic problems, growing our business community and creating jobs, attacking litter, blight and homelessness, and improving our education system.

Lunch is $25, payable to the restaurant. Reservations are not required. The Chairman of the Chamber is Cecil Cavanaugh. The Chamber of Commerce of East Baton Rouge Parish represents small business owners in East Baton Rouge Parish who share a belief in the free enterprise system, Constitutional government, individual rights, safe streets, and the need for a moral rebirth in the country. It was founded in 2012.

LIVE — REP. RAYMOND CREWS EXPLAINS ‘LOUISIANA GOLD CURRENCY PLATFORM’ AT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF EBR PARISH

BATON ROUGE — Rep. Raymond Crews, author of House Bill 714, creating the “Louisiana Gold Currency Platform,” discusses his bill at the Chamber of Commerce of East Baton Rouge Parish at 12 noon Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at Café Américain, 7521 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge.

Rep. Crews is offering this landmark legislation that takes advantage of Article I, Section 10 of the United States Constitution. That section of the Constitution, which has never been utilized, allows states to issue currency if backed by gold or silver. The Constitution gives that currency “legal tender” status that could mean transactions would not be subject to capital gains tax.

Five years ago, the State of Texas created the Texas Bullion Depository, which allows people to store gold, silver, platinum, and palladium in a facility much like Fort Knox. It is located outside Austin and is under the jurisdiction of the Comptroller of the State of Texas. All buillion on deposit is insured by Lloyd’s of London.

Rep. Crews’ bill would allow the Louisiana Department of the Treasury to contract with companies such as Glint that offers accounts secured by gold on deposit. Account holders are issued debit cards that allow them to access their gold accounts and make transactions in gold, dollars, and other currencies.

Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming, M.D., supports the legislation because, he said, “It allows people to own gold safely and to use gold as a hedge against inflation. It’s really about protecting people with a secure way to hold and utilize this precious metal in a way that has never before been possible.”

The Louisiana Department of Treasury would not receive gold, own gold, or lend gold but would allow deposits of gold through the Treasury at the Texas Bullion Depository or other approved facility.

The gold would always be under the ownership of the depositor, not the state, and would be available on demand during normal business hours.

Assuming the Louisiana Department of Treasury decides to contract with the State of Texas, the bullion on deposit there is inspected weekly by the State Comptroller. It is subject to numerous inspections and audits and is insured by Lloyd’s of London. The Louisiana Legislator Auditor’s office would be regularly auditing the facility and the transactions.

The Louisiana Department of Treasury is funded by fees for services it provides, rather than tax dollars. The Louisiana Gold Currency Platform would also generate non-tax dollars for the Treasury through transaction fees when people use dollars to buy gold through the platform or when they use their gold-backed debit cards.

Some believe that because this currency is backed by gold, is legal tender, and is transactional that gains will not be taxable.

Glint, which is a possible contractor providing card services, has 200,000 clients worldwide. The Glint app is available online, and anyone can open an account with small deposit and own gold. With the involvement of the Louisiana Department of Treasury, the gold on deposit would qualify as legal tender and perhaps be free of capital gains taxes, Rep. Crews believes.

Copies of HB 714 and all other legislation can be viewed at legis.la.gov.
