Chuck van Zyl "Live On Star's End 10.06.19" currently available for purchase via projekt.com. Here is the description:

Guiding listeners from the safe place of what they know to an active awareness of what can be is the job of a good DJ – and a good musician too. During his ongoing 40 year tenure as host of the weekly radio program Star’s End, Chuck van Zyl has been commissioned with the task of leading an audience – the proficiency of which may also be found in his musical realizations.

So inspired by the music he was spinning on-air, Chuck van Zyl began making his own Electronic Music works – with a synthesizer he still uses to this day. Live on Star’s End 10.06.19 (75’22”) is the second in a series of live-to-air radio concert releases, and features over 75 minutes of the live Spacemusic he made in the WXPN performance studio during the private Salon Concert and live-to-air broadcast of 5/6 October 2019.

In this music Chuck van Zyl gives voice to the character of his existence. It is a proclamation of his alive-ness, by way of an in-the-moment inventiveness. A complex multi-leveled album Live on Star’s End 10.06.19 utilizes the full dynamic range of sonic possibilities. Moving truly between an electric unrestrained intensity on down to shivering chill currents, the juxtaposition of the primitive and the delicate lends tension to the drama. Working the dials, searching out the sound, groping for the pulse – in whirlwinds of intertwining sequencer lines, and the gorgeous exploration of tone color, form and atmosphere – he coaxes magical moments into the sound space.

Chuck’s live concerts show the identity of his instruments as equally as they do the identity of the artist. Making music in an enormous present, his live improvisations find Chuck attempting to transcend, not an instrument, but a system of instruments – a constellation of synths, sequencers, echoes and reverbs all in service to a potent musical vision. An expressive power, the right situation of the venue and the heedful is capable of releasing unsuspected energies. With the body activated and central nervous system firing the joy of playing this music is unmatched.

If the moral track of the Universe arcs upward, then this music must be part of that eventuality. Just as the optimism of the weekly broadcasts of Star’s End (in contrast to the present moment) seem a notion leftover from the previous century, so will albums like Live on Star’s End 10.06.19 chip away at the inherent dissonance at the heart of modern life. Although the subject of this album may be specific, its implications are cosmic.

Now available for pre-order via Projekt.com is the 3CD reissue of 3 live recordings from The Ministry of Inside Things (Chuck van Zyl, Art Cohen & Peter Gulch) titled "Trilogy". Here is the release info:

The Ministry of Inside Things, consisting of synthesist Chuck van Zyl, electric guitarist Art Cohen (and former member electronic musician Peter D Gulch), are considered among the most innovative of US spacemusicians. Influenced by the early music of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Ash Ra Tempel, their work has been described as linear, leading the listener across many sonic terrains. Based on improvisation, The Ministry of Inside Things creates electronic realizations that flow from theme to theme, with the experience often lasting up to two hours. Through use of textures and atmospheres as well as harmony, rhythm and melody, the group transports the audience on an internal sonic excursion.

Chuck van Zyl has been recording electronic music and performing live for more than 30 years, but is best known for hosting STAR’S END for the past 37 years – considered by many to be one of the world’s most successful radio shows of electronic music. Art Cohen has been pushing the limits of the electric guitar in the studio and in live performance for well over 40 years. Peter D Gulch co-founded The Nightcrawlers, the innovative Spacemusic ensemble which provided a major influence over the 1980s independent music scene in the Philadelphia region, and internationally through the release of three revered LPs and a great number of self-produced audio cassettes.

“Trilogy” is a reissue of three complete live recordings by The Ministry of Inside Things. Released initially as very limited CDRs, the three reissued live albums are replicated as professionally manufactured CDRs. Each set includes an insert with release notes and is packaged inside a deluxe box with a silver, foil-stamped cover.

“Trilogy” is limited to 100 hand-numbered copies, signed by Chuck van Zyl, Art Cohen & Peter D Gulch).

Two new releases coming out on June 2nd. The first is a CD reissue of Chuck van Zyl "Celestial Mechanics".

Release Summary:
Celestial Mechanics’ origin extends back to the era of tape. The 1980s found Chuck van Zyl recording spacemusic and releasing it on audio cassette. Synkronos Music put out a trove of releases, including The Moment of Totality (1990) and Callisto (1989). Each cassette held two side-long pieces of music, and established a series of releases by van Zyl representing his enthusiasm for astronomy and the cosmos. Released on CD in 1993 by Scotland’s Centaur Discs Ltd, that original CD has been out of print for years. But thanks to the Philadelphia-based industry8 label, Celestial Mechanics is back with us, re-issued, re-mastered and treated to modern audio enhancements, and a much improved fidelity. Housed in a limited edition (100 signed and numbered copies), four panel digipak, and adorned with vivid NASA probe images, it offers the opportunity to encounter the significant backstory to one of our community’s most unique members.

New release coming out November 12th:

Chuck Van Zyl “The Xyl File” (Limited Edition) CD
Originally released as an audio cassette in 1991, The Xyl File compiled four pieces from the first two tape offerings by Chuck van Zyl. In fact, released under the name Xyl, Low Glide (10:10), Nuclear Winter (14:24), The Theory Changes the Reality It Describes (23:07) and Runway (14:29) were among the very first electronic realizations produced by the noted Electronic Musician Chuck van Zyl. Twenty five years on, we find these works (originally from as far back as 1985) to be surprisingly well-conceived and executed for an artist just at the outset of a life-long journey into space and sound.

Re-issued on CD in 2016 (with two fellow tracks from the same prior period) by the Philadelphia based independent label Industry8, The Xyl File (73:32) presents an impressive range of textures, atmospheres, moods and energy levels. From desolate soundscapes of metallic drones and chilled fallout chimes, and darkening fields of sustaining sci-fi zones, to cruise missile sequencer cascades, and the echoing rush of warped-out mechanized tone patterns, each of these re-mastered and re-vitalized tracks imaginatively explore all the dark, light, loud and quiet realms available to the learned synthesist. What sets this music apart from that of its contemporaries is an enthusiasm, optimism and ambition found only in the beginner.

Exposed to an astounding depth and range of music while producing the WXPN radio programs DIASPAR and STAR'S END (1980-onward), Chuck van Zyl became most deeply moved by album discoveries out of the Berlin-School of EM. Obvious titles by Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream and Michael Hoenig such as Mirage, Rubycon and Departure From the Northern Wasteland certainly influenced the works found on The Xyl File; as did their near relatives Oxygene by Jean-Michel Jarre, Iceland by Richard Pinhas, and even the much more avant-ambient Sonic Seasonings by Wendy Carlos and Hearing Solar Winds by David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir. But perhaps of even greater significance was the encouragement and friendship of The Nightcrawlers, the local trio of Spacemusicians who fostered and sustained Philadelphia's innovative music scene throughout the decade of the 1980s - and whose care, oversight and attachment van Zyl so benefited from.

The Xyl File is not only a document of Chuck van Zyl's first principles, it is also a finely crafted journey through turbulent forces - those of sound, and of the intellect. These six 25+ year old compositions are evidence that the only limit there is on the future are the doubts of today. The act of making this music, of trusting in the future, finds Chuck van Zyl declaring and defining himself - in this music full of passionate intensity, meaningful stillness, and the humanity that lies in-between.

Limited edition CD (not a CDR) of 100 signed and numbered copies. Packaged in a 4-panel digipak.

Track Listing:
