🦋🧡 ⚕️FEBRUARY IS OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH ⚕️🧡🦋

February marks Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month which serves to advocate and raise funds for medical research, improved treatments, and public awareness campaigns.

What are the key facts?

⚕️ Every year, around 1,815 Australian women and 250,000 women globally are diagnosed.

⚕️Approximately 1000 lives are lost to ovarian cancer every year in Australia.

⚕️Ovarian cancer is more common in women over 50.

⚕️The chances of a women developing ovarian cancer when she is 75 is 1 in 161.

⚕️ 90% of cases of ovarian cancer are of the common epithelial type that develops from cells outside the o***y.

⚕️Due to lack of detection and vagueness of symptoms, 70% of cases are diagnosed when in advanced stages.

⚕️ Over the next 10 years, it is predicted that 10,000 Australian women and girls will lose their live with ovarian cancer.

🧡 ⚕️ O**m aims to provide a platform to women to increase their awareness in these topics in a user-friendly way to navigate their own and the medical journeys of others.

What does technologies and systems involve?

🤖AI refers to systems that are capable of thinking, mimicking, and executing human actions.

🤖The objective of AI is to create models that complete tasks that would normally require human reasoning to streamline processes across various industries.

🤖Narrow or Weak AI is designed to execute a specific function, like image recognition and maintaining a narrow scope of function.

🤖General or Strong AI is the long-term goal of AI and aims to build intelligent machines that are understand, learn, and apply at level indistinguishable from humans.

🤖Machine learning is a subset of AI and involves systems that perform tasks without explicit programming and instead are trained using data to make decisions.

🤖Machine learning models learn from examples and experience which can differ based on the nature of data it is trained on. Eg: ChatGPT

🤖Models of machine learning include: Supervised learning, Unsupervised learning, and Reinforcement Learning.

💙🔎 WHAT IS A HYSTEROSCOPY? 💙🔎

What is a Hysteroscopy and where does it fit in women’s health?

🔎Hysteroscopy is a procedure performed to visualise the uterus and surrounding structures for diagnostic and therapeutic indications.

🔎Hysteroscopies are usually performed in outpatient settings with the patient awake, with patients administered either local or general anaesthesia.

🔎 Biopsies of uterus may also be taken during this procedure for further investigation.

🔎Hysteroscopies are indicated for a vast range of gynaecological concerns including heavy periods, polyps, or infertility.

🔎Potential risks of hysteroscopy are low, with only a small contingency of women reporting side-effects after the procedure and thus it is considered very safe.

🔎Hysteroscopies carry various benefits including to patient preference, post-operative experience and avoiding surgery or hysterectomy.

🔎Limitations of hysteroscopies is in detecting tubal pathology or external uterine contour, making hysteroscopies not sufficient during an infertility evaluation.

💙🔎 O**m is a platform that seeks to shed spotlight on women-specific information in an intuitive way that is currently inaccessible due to a lack of exposure or hidden behind complex medical jargon.

💜 🧪 IRON TESTING 💜🧪

What does iron testing involve?

🧪Iron is an essential mineral that modulates various processes in the body, importantly, iron maintains a primary role in oxygen transport.

🧪 Iron cannot be produced in the body and is absorbed from dietary sources.

🧪Low iron levels can be caused by various factors including inflammatory bowel disease, pregnancy, and menstruation.

🧪High iron levels can cause organ damage. Hemochromatosis is one condition in which iron removal process is compromised, leading to excess iron.

🧪When iron deficiency or iron overload is suspected, iron studies may be required which are a suite of iron tests completed on the same sample of blood.

🧪The tests include serum iron test, ferritin test, transferrin test, total-iron binding capacity test and transferrin capacity.

🧪The results from these tests are typically interpreted in tandem and compared with trends seen in iron-related disease to make a diagnosis.

🧪Iron-deficiency anaemia is more common in men than women. Moreover, due to pregnancy and menstruation, women are additionally susceptible to iron deficiency.

💜 🧪 O**m seeks to provide extensive information for every stage of a women’s health journey including the seemingly small details like pathology. We seek to improve healthcare for women by providing a platform for women to take charge of their health.

💗🔎UTERINE TRANSPLANTATION 💗🔎

How has uterine transplantation research evolved?

🔎 Uterine transplantation is a breakthrough procedure that seeks to improve fertility outcomes in women.

🔎 The concept of Uterine transplantation was bon from successful ovarian autotransplantation in rabbits in 1896.

🔎 Throughout 1918 and beyond, many studies investigated uterine transplantation in various animal models. With the most notable being a 2010 Swedish trial that documented a successful uterus transplantation in a rat.

🔎 The first application of uterus transplantation occurred in 2000, in a recipient who lost their uterus to haemorrhage. Due to complications, the uterus was later removed.

🔎 In 2012, a pioneering trial led by a Swedish group successfully completed a mother-to-daughter uterine transplantation. Subsequently, the recipient was also able to give birth.

🔎 Australian researchers collaborated with Swedish pioneers to complete the first Australian mother-to-daughter uterine transplantation in Kirsty Bryant, who later gave birth to a baby boy, Henry.

🔎 While uterine transplantation has demonstrated success, due to its novelty and the requirement for specialised clinicians, its accessibility is limited but will seemingly improve in future years.

🩷🔎 O**m seeks to provide women the latest, up-to-date evidence to improve an awareness of medical knowledge, potential options and improve their participation in medical discussions with their provider.

💩✨ ALL ABOUT GASTROSCOPY ✨💩

💩Gastroscopy is a common investigation to look at the inner lining of you gastrointestinal tract

💩It is often done to look for gastritis, polyps or cancers. But also can be done to monitor conditions.

💩Given how many women suffer from stomach issues, this is very commonly recommended if medical treatments aren’t working.

💩Symptoms that usually result in gastroscopy are recurrent abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, recurrent reflux, changes in bowel habits, issues with swallowing or anaemia (which can be due to blood loss in the gastrointestinal tract)

💩During the procedure you are under general anaesthetic and a flexible plastic tube is placed down the throat which has a camera, and also an ability to take a small biopsy.

💩It is usually a simple day procedure, and you likely won’t wake up in any pain.

💩Before the procedure you will need to be fasted, and are often given a laxative to clear yourself out.

✨How will O**m help?✨

💩O**m will play an important role in helping you find more information about the procedure before you have one, to store appointment reminders, and will also allow you to store your reports so that you can have them easily accessible whenever you need regardless of changing doctors or clinics!

🧡🦴OSTEOPEROSIS🦴🧡

What is involved and how do women uniquely experience osteoporosis?

🦴 Osteoporosis is a disease of the bone, that causes them to be more fragile and vulnerable to breaks.

🦴 Due to the increased incidence of fractures, osteoporosis is associated with mobility issues, loss of independence and diminished wellbeing.

🦴Osteoporosis can’t be cured, but it can be effectively managed through lifestyle changes and medications that slow bone loss.

🦴 Globally, one in three women will experience a fracture due to osteoporosis as compared to men where the incidence is one in five.

🦴 A women’s risk of fracture is equal to her combined risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer.

🦴 About one in two women over the age of 60 will experience at least one fracture to osteoporosis.

🦴🧡O**m understand that women experience health and disease differently. As such, we seek to narrow this gap by providing women with the up-to-date, accessible facts, directly from their smart devices.

💚 🔎RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT 💚 🔎

Are women still being told by health professionals to get pregnant to treat or manage endometriosis?

🔎 New research published in BMC Women’s Health, conducted in Australia aimed to explore this question.

🔎 Endometriosis is a chronic condition that is characterised by varied symptoms including bowel disturbances and pelvic pain and is complicated by delayed diagnosis.

🔎 3347 participants completed the study survey, and more than half of these participants indicated that they had been advised to get pregnant to manage or treat their endometriosis.

🔎 Interestingly, 89.4% of these individuals received this advice from healthcare professionals.

🔎 Thematic analysis of a subset of responders found that receiving this advice impinged on their mental health, relationships, and trust in healthcare system.

🔎 Within these themes, there was also disparity between women who identified the advice as misinformation and others who accepted the advice, proceeding to pregnancy planning.

🔎 Despite pregnancy not being a validated management option for endometriosis, it continues to be touted to suffering women with negative implications.

💚 🔎 Research like these solidifies the outstanding gaps in women’s health and highlights the need for O**M. An app that supports women to confidently negative their health with up to date evidence based information delivered intuitively. Made by women, for women, to empower women.

🤍⚕INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE IN WOMEN⚕🤍

How do women uniquely experience IBD?

⚕ IBD involves Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis which affect various parts of the gastrointestinal tract, from mouth to a**s.

⚕ A definitive cause for IBD is currently not understood. However, a prevailing view is that IBD is a multifactorial disease.

⚕ The gold standard for detecting IBD is through colonoscopy. However, imaging, faecal and blood testing are also supportive in differential diagnosis.

⚕ Treatment paradigms are complex, but early intervention with immunosuppressive medication is a common and successful approach in IBD patients.

⚕ In an ECCO study, IBD misdiagnosis was reported in 61.6% of women and women also maintained a significantly longer time from onset to IBD diagnosis than men (4.5 vs 3.8 months)

⚕ Women experience IBD differently to men. IBD has been found to complicate pregnancy, me**es and exacerbate osteoporosis and anaemia.

🤍⚕ O**M understands that these subsets of vulnerable women and seeks to provide them with a platform to become advocates for their health.

💚🧪PREGNANCY TESTING 🧪💚

🧪 hCG is released by the placenta, and is principally involved in the maintenance of pregnancy by stimulating the placenta to produce progesterone.

🧪 hCG blood tests are known as HCG, Beta HCG, BHCG, QHCG, quantitative serum, BHCG and represent urgent tests.

🧪 Aside from laboratory blood and urine testing, hCG detection in urine is also the basis of many home pregnancy tests.

🧪 Reference values for hCG throughout pregnancy in concert with other clinical details are used to assess for pregnancy issues for example; if there is an ectopic pregnancy, or non-viable pregnancy.

🧪 hCG is a serological gold standard for determining pregnancy but other clinical or temporal issues may result in false negative or positive results.

🧪💚 O**M is tasked with building an interface for women to keep track of their blood results, like hCG results and simultaneously learn about them with evidence based information.

💜🔎Women in clinical trials💜🔎

What has been the timeline of women’s participation in clinical trials?

🔎 The FDA in 1977 recommended that women be barred from Phase I and II trials owing to earlier tragic thalidomide trials.

🔎 Several protests followed, particularly for the exclusion of women from HIV drug trials.

🔎 In 1986, National Institutes of Health (NIH), issued a policy to encourage investigators to include women in studies.

🔎 In 1990, an audit found that the NIH’s policy was being adopted sparingly and there was still a looming lack of women in clinical trials.

🔎 In 1991, the instalment of female director of the NIH resulted in the advent of the Women’s Health initiative which enrolled more than 150,000 women in trials over 15 years.

🔎 In 1993, the NIH inclusion policy became federal law and FDA also enacted a new guideline to encourage women’s participation in trials.

🔎 While efforts have improved to include women in trials, there is still limited inclusion and broader issues relating to the diversity of women in trials.

💜🔎 O**M bridges these gaps. Built for women, by women, to ensure that women are at the forefront of their own health.

🧡🦠Human papillomavirus (HPV)🦠🧡

🦠 HPV is one of the most common sexual transmitted infection (STI).

🦠 There are over 100 types of HPV, with over 40 HPV strains affecting the ge***al area, and fewer, the cells of the cervix.

🦠 HPV types can be classified as low risk or high risk. Low-risk types are associated with ge***al warts, and high-risk types can be associated with cervical and v***al cancers.

🦠 If high-risk types are detected on your CST this will lead to a Colposcopy - which looks more closely for cellular changes in your cervix and v***a.

🦠 HPV infections generally go unnoticed as many individuals do not present with symptoms and therefore can inadvertently transmit the disease to partners.

🦠 For 5 to 10% of women, HPV can lead to changes in the cells of their cervix and can escalate to cervical cancer.

🦠 Early vaccination and continued cervical screening are the best ways for women to be protected against HPV.

🦠🧡 O**M is missioned to improve health outcomes in women by providing tailored health information in a simplified, and easy to understand approach.

🤎🫀Heart check-ups 🫀 🤎

Heart check-ups can be complex to understand. But what does heart monitoring actually entail?

🫀Usually it will invovle some blood test, and heart monitoring

🫀This done for people with symptoms of chest pain, breathlessness, fatigue, leg swelling, fainting or those at risk of cardiac disease.

🫀Some examples include those with diabetes, high blood pressure, a high BMI, PCOS, menopause, or those with a family history of heart disease

🫀 Many heart monitoring methods exist but the most widely used include electrocardiograms and Holter monitoring.

🫀 A standard resting ECG is often conducted while the patient lies flat and provides a brief sample of electrical activity over 10 seconds.

🫀 Ambulatory methods which includes Holter monitors provide ECG data over an extended timeframe, indicated for more complex heart conditions.

🫀 Heart disease impacts women more than men, but additional support is not available to combat this disparity, with women tending to have their symptoms overlooked.

🫀 Women also exhibit hesitancy in seeking heart screening due to the invasiveness of the process.

🌸💜 GESTATIONAL DIABETES 🌸💜

We all hear about diabetes in non-pregnant people, but how does it differ in pregnant individuals?

🌸Pregnancy causes physiological changes that lead to a shift in our responsible to blood sugar regulation
🌸 This is why ALL women have their blood sugars checked as part of antenatal care
🌸However, some women are more at risk of developing diabetes, and need earlier screening checks
🌸It can be managed with lifestyle changes (diet, exercise) or medication
🌸If you do develop gestational diabetes or should resolve after pregnancy, but can put you at risk of developing T2 diabetes later on.

Just some food for thought..

Why is it that women’s mental health is so poor in Australia?

Why are women suffering from so many chronic conditions?

These statistics are clear evidence that women’s healthcare is insufficient and needs improvement.

Women need more support with their health, to avoid chronic disease and with that - hopefully improvement in their mental health.

As we can see from these statistics - many of the reasons for an increase in women’s mental health issues are downstream of chronic pain, hormone imbalances and reproductive health issues.

Women need more support, and recognition of the women specific issues they are facing, and how it impacts their quality of life.

This is why .i is working towards developing a tool that helps women navigate and track their health holistically, and accurately. So that they feel more educated, supported and confident to advocate for the supper they need!

🤎 GENDER BIAS IN A.I 🤎We all know that A.I is here to stay. Now being incorporated into every industry to improve productivity, efficacy, accuracy and fundamentally economic viability. Everyone has to keep up with competitors, if you don't use A.I - you are pretty much behind the game.

The scary thing is, that most of the data sets used to train these new generative A.I models are built on data that is reflective of decades of women not being included in clinical trials, or excluded from certain industries. This meaning outputs from these ML models are based off data that does not consider a women's response to certain factors, or contribution to certain industries.

For example; much of the voice recognition datasets used by A.I models are based off a white male's voice tone and pitch. Where as women use higher pitches then men. As voice recognition becomes more incorporated into A.I - this could lead to inadequacies in a women's ability to interact effectively with A.I, and for A.I to recognise female voices.

The impact on health is even greater. Most of the data sets from the last few decades within medical research is skewed, and underrepresents women. Especially pregnant women, or women of reproductive age. Meaning treatments and diagnostics for women are not always reflective of a women's physiology. Eg cardiovascular drugs have been based off mainly male data for decades.

We need to work to train A.I on real women's data so we can improve the accuracy of A.I for women, especially in industries where inaccurate use could have life threatening implications if not used correctly. For example; in healthcare.

🤷‍♀️ DO OUR YOUNG ADULTS UNDERSTAND MENOPAUSE? 🤷‍♀️

Patel, V., Ross, S. & Sydora, B.C. Assessing young adults’ menopause knowledge to increase understanding of symptoms and help improve quality of life for women going through menopause; a student survey. _BMC Women’s Health_ **23**, 493 (2023). https://doi.org/10.1186/s12905-023-02641-4

This paper was super interesting! It looked at young adults at university and their basic knowledge of menopause 📖

☝️FINDINGS: That most young adults have a very basic understanding of menopause. There is a big gap in knowledge when it comes to symptoms and management. However, they also are very keen to learn more.

🤓STATS:
Most participants were enrolled in the Faculty of Science (195, 23.6%), followed by Arts (160, 19.3%), and Engineering (93, 11.2%),

The majority of participants were female (683, 82.5%) and identified as a woman (658, 79.5%).

81.6% of participants reported having a close contact with a woman in menopause.

The majority (66.8%) described menopause as the time when menstrual periods stop and the end of fertility (48.2%)

About a quarter (23.3%) mentioned that menopause relates to debilitating symptoms with a few mentioning prototypical menopause symptoms such as hot flashes and mood swings. Six admitted that they do not know, are not sure, or have no idea what menopause is.

About a third (33.7%) acknowledge that this has to do with hormonal changes, and a few (4.5%) named estrogen and progesterone as the hormones involved.

✔️CAN I TRUST THIS? This was published in. The British Medical Journal which is a very reputable journal with high peer review processes. Also this paper had a very large sample size which means it is highly representative of this population. However, surveys are not the most accurate way of obtaining qualitative data.
