Be a good human in 2022
"Be a good human," four simple words I saw printed on a wooden plaque on display outside Westcott Mercantile in Belmont Center. Seeing these words in that moment gave me great pause, especially during these trying times we are have been living in since March 2020. They are words we should all live by and remember when we are about to lose it due to delays at the airport or bad traffic on the highway or long lines at Starbucks.
Thoughts about 2021
As 2021 comes to an end, I’d like to share some final thoughts about our little town with many big hearts. If anyone is considering moving to Belmont, here’s what I would tell them about the community:
Belmont is known as the town of homes, but it really should be known as, “the town of good humans.” The volunteerism and commitment by residents who voluntarily serve Belmont in many different capacities is praiseworthy.
Shout-outs
First and foremost, the three men who serve on our Select Board, Chairman Adam Dash, Vice Chairman Roy Epstein and member Mark Paolillo should be recognized and thanked for the countless hours they put in as leaders of our town government. It’s no easy task and a commitment that should not be taken lightly by anyone considering it in the upcoming town election.
The School Committee members also deserve gratitude for their efforts to continue the excellence that Belmont Public Schools is known for and that its residents expect. May all the schools continue to remain open in 2022 and the scars of COVID on our children who are suffering academically and mentally as a result of schools closing and remote learning be temporary.
The Board of Health should not go unnoticed for making sure our community stays health by keeping an eye on the number of COVID cases, putting the necessary restrictions in place and making testing and vaccines available for eligible residents.
This past year was also very challenging for the volunteers who serve on the Zoning Board of Appeals as they had the monumental task of deciding the fate of a proposed 40b apartment complex on a tight lot in a single family neighborhood. Hats off to Chairman Nicholas Iannuzzi, Jr. and Vice Chairman Jim Zarkadas for leading this effort and for their years of service and commitment to the ZBA.
Belmont Helps is new organization, founded as a result of COVID, that Belmont is lucky to have. Volunteers who help families who have been struggling as a result of jobs lost, elderly residents who live alone, even hospital workers on the front lines.
On Dec. 18, I witnessed firsthand how volunteers from the Belmont Lions Club accomplish their motto's mission, “We serve.” Volunteers consisting of the Lions Club members and their family members, worked together to help bring joy to 500 children through their “Traveling Santa” program.
Belmont resident Courtney Morton is another selfless volunteer who led the effort for “Christmas in the Village,” to provide gifts for familes who live in Belmont Village, part of the Belmont Housing Authority.
The Belmont Historical Society should also be recognized for the work their volunteers like Viktoria Haase and Deborah Rosales do to help preserve Belmont’s history. She goes to the Claflin room weekly to cut out articles from the Belmont Citizen-Herald and file them so that 10 or 20 years from now if someone wants to know what was happening in Belmont in 2021, they could easily look it up.
Thank you to Belmont Media Center’s volunteers like the hosts of the weekly cable news program, “Belmont Journal” for their weekly commitment to this informative program.
Efforts to build a new library and new skating rink are also under way with volunteer leaders including Elaine Alligood, Kathy Keohane, Mark Haley and Dante Muzzioli.
The Planning Board, Board of Assessors, Town Meeting members, Belmont Food Pantry, Belmont Human Rights Commission, Belmont Against Racism, Citizens for a Fiscally Responsibly Belmont, Community Organized for Solidarity...there is just not enough space in this newspaper to recognize all the volunteers in Belmont. Without all these good humans, the town would not be the same. Belmont Ma - Community Chat Belmont Helps Westcott Mercantile Belmont MA.
