A MOTHER’S STORY OF HER GAY CHILD
by LN Magazine

LN Magazine learned of a beautiful story where a mother of a gay son starts her own PFLAG group. She displays such love, support and compassion for not only her child but the whole LGBTQ+ community. We wanted to make sure we got a hold of this lovely woman and shared her story.

How many of us had or would love to have had, a mother who not only accepts us unconditionally but also wants to volunteer her time and energy to helping other member’s of our community? Hope Colvin IS one of these mother’s. LN had the pleasure of hearing Hope’s story:

“I am PFLAG. It's a statement that can be said by so many. I am a mom - and I am PFLAG. I am an educator - and I am PFLAG. I am an ally - and I am PFLAG. I am all of these things. Since our son came out to us at the age of 11, my goal was to encourage him to live authentically and find community that supports him in this journey. PFLAG opened their doors and hearts and it's my honor to serve as the current President of our Peachtree City, GA chapter.

A little history: PFLAG was founded over 50 years ago in New York's Greenwich Village, just steps from the historic Stonewall Inn. What began as a small group of parents, like myself, advocating for the rights and safety of their children, has grown into the nation’s largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them. Currently there are over 400 chapters across the US. In Georgia alone, we've grown to 16 separate vibrant and active chapters. PFLAG is not just for allies, but for anyone who wants to make a difference for individuals and families.

I, along with every PFLAG volunteer, am here to serve. That includes fighting for intersectional justice, fostering community outreach, building meaningful connections through support meetings and social gatherings, offering resources to individuals and businesses seeking to support their LGBTQ+ friends, colleagues, and family members, and advocating for just, equitable, and inclusive legislation and policies. PFLAG will give you the tools to be a stronger, more empowered ally. I am excited about the possibilities that together we can continue to ensure that LGBTQ+ people everywhere are safe, celebrated, empowered and loved.”

WOW! I’m sure all of you reading this article are feeling some sort of emotion. I know we here at LN sure are. What a wonderful woman to give such support and love to her son PLUS wanting to give to our community! The appreciation we have for women like Hope Colvin, is off the charts. In fact, haven’t we all seen at Pride festivals, that members of PFLAG usually get the loudest cheers and applause? Why? Because seeing parents, friends and allies of our community coming out and showing their support for us is unbelievably touching. It makes us feel more part of society and more acceptance for who we are.

The fact that so many in this world are fighting against us, wanting our rights taken away and these individuals are brave and loving enough to want to join OUR fight, is absolutely wonderful.

Thank you Hope Colvin, for making a difference in the lives of so many and especially your son’s… We here at LN, applaud you…

Thoughts?

“A cisgender woman in Arizona is speaking out after she says she was harassed by cops in the women’s restroom of a Tucson Walmart late last month.

Kalaya Morton, 19, of Phoenix, says she and her ex-girlfriend were using adjacent stalls in the store’s women’s restroom when two male sheriff’s deputies entered.

“They were flashing lights on our feet and saying, ‘You have to get out of here. You have to come out. We need to talk to you,’” Morton told Advocate.

Morton, who identifies as a stud — q***r slang for a masculine-presenting le***an — says she believes a store employee who had been eyeing her earlier reported her to the cops believing she was a man. As the Advocate notes, Arizona law does not dictate that people use public restrooms that correspond with the s*x they were assigned at birth.

In social media videos and in her interview with the outlet, Morton said that when she exited the bathroom stall, she lifted her shirt to prove to the deputies that she was a woman. But, she said, one of the deputies continued to insist she “looked like a man.”
On February 19, Morton posted a brief video of the encounter, showing the two deputies in the women’s bathroom. “They came in here in the girls’ restroom because I’m a girl and they didn’t think I was a girl, so they tried to come take me away,” Morton can be heard saying off camera.

“The only men in the women’s restroom were the cops,” she said.
The incident comes amid growing hostility toward transgender Americans on the political right. Republicans, including the president, have framed laws restricting transgender women’s and girls’ access to public facilities like bathrooms and locker rooms as efforts to protect cisgender women and girls. But critics have long argued that such restrictions will, in fact, inevitably lead to greater policing of all women’s gender presentation and invasive, potentially dangerous confrontations like the one Morton says she endured.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department told the outlet that authorities are aware of Morton’s social media video and have launched an internal investigation into the incident. A Walmart representative said that the company is cooperating with the investigation

In a March 1 TikTok video, Morton said she intends to sue.
“If someone mistakes me for a guy, I usually just correct them or let it go,” she said. “But this was different. This wasn’t just someone calling me ‘sir’ — this was law enforcement trying to remove me from a bathroom where I had every right to be.”

She said the confrontation left her afraid. “It’s already enough being Black and facing discrimination,” Morton said. “Now I have to worry about being harassed just for needing to p*e?”

“This isn’t just about me,” she added. “It’s about making sure this doesn’t happen to the next person who just wants to use the restroom without being harassed.”

North America’s longest-running le***an publication

Founded in 1975 in Southern California, the LN began as the lone voice for le***an issues. Today, the LN is still the nation’s foremost voice for le***ans of all ages.

Le***an News is the vehicle for the experience of women’s art, music, literature, films, and history. We have premiered women’s films which would not have otherwise been seen. We have reviewed women’s literature and music which would not have found an audience and we have financially supported workshops and fundraisers that could not have been successful without us.

With informative current articles and the truth about political matters which impact us, such as same-s*x marriage, adoptions, and discrimination in the workplace, no other magazine in the world is as targeted directly to the le***an community or as much a leader in supporting le***an issues as Le***an News. We are not only a magazine published for and about le***ans, but also by le***ans.
