It has been a busy couple of weeks with the Pâté album being released and being played by Gideon Coe on BBC Radio 6 Music. And yesterday work started on some new Richard Hughes material (might be a single, might be an EP, might be the start of an album) at Penquit Mill with Sean Willmott and the brilliant Matthew Board and Lucy Board. Rock and roll and all that :-)

Tonight on BBC Radio 6 Music Gideon Coe played P.A.T.E. by Pâté and said: "I am really very fond of that and the rest of the album is good as well. It's called P.A.T.E. and it's from the debut album 100% Organic Pâté by Pâté. It's on the Zebra4ever label on vinyl and also available to download via bandcamp."

Released on Sunday, January 30, the debut album by Bristol/London band Pâté - 100% Organic Pâté - is the culmination of a DIY project begun by two friends in 2019, and fine-tuned in 2021. It is beautiful music, warm and vibrant, and feels hand-crafted, perhaps because of the room in which it was created.

It is unlikely you have heard a record made in the sprayroom of a carpentry workshop before. I may be wrong, but if you haven’t, the record is definitely worth a listen.

Made by good friends Jona Warbey and Sean Willmott, 100% Organic Pâté is a hand-crafted, warm and vibrant record which will be available on vinyl and download through Bandcamp.

Multi-instrumentalists, Jona and Sean have been through a journey of discovery making this record - and already the stems of a follow-up are being nurtured.

Jona says: “Sean and I have always mucked about musically in bands and on random evenings of fun. But after a long hiatus -
getting on with life and becoming fathers - we reconvened in 2019 and two things changed.

“Firstly, Sean was encouraging me to sing, a voyage of discovery in itself, which included lyric writing, which I have always found hard. But I found a way to be more opaque and say less, be descriptive rather than specific. This gave us a bit more
direction and focus, and forced us to be more structured.

“Secondly, when Sean played some of the tracks to our friend Richard of Zebra4ever!, with his optimism we were fired up to do the hard bit and finish the songs.”

Pâté’s sound is built around a strong rhythmic base with lots of percussive elements provided by Sean - the ideas often starting from a raw riff or phrase.

Jona says: “We then go to town, layering the tracks up with guitars, random sounds, vocal ideas, and usually an old Casio through foot pedals and a cheap MiniKORG. It’s all very quick and vibey. We keep the recording as simple as possible - four inputs max into a free copy of Cubase on an old laptop, even the drums.”

This method resulted in nine beautiful songs which are, at their core, moments of pure DIY magic, with elements of guitar-pop and subtle rock, jazz and electronica, all fusing to bring out a unique and refreshing sound that is hard to pin down.

Richard Hughes, who runs Zebra4ever!, said: “The moment Sean played me the demos I knew I had to put out an album. They are songs that need to be heard and shared.”
