It’s an observation as old as humans gathering around campfires: Light at night can draw an erratically circling crowd of insects. In art, music, and literature, this spectacle is an enduring metaphor for dangerous but irresistible attractions. And watching their frenetic movements really gives the sense that something is wrong – that instead of finding food and evading predators, these nocturnal pilots are trapped by a light.

Sadly, centuries of witnessing what happens have produced little certainty about why it happens. How does a simple light change fast, precise navigators into helpless, flittering captives? We are researchers examining flight, vision, and evolution, and we have used high-speed tracking techniques in newly published research to provide an answer.

Moths to a flame?

Many old explanations for this hypnotic behavior have not fully panned out. An early notion was that the insects might be attracted to the heat of a flame. This was interesting, as some insects really are pyrophilic: They are attracted to fire and have evolved to take advantage of conditions in recently burned areas. But most insects around a light are not in this category, and cool lights attract them quite well.

Another thought was that insects were just directly attracted to light, a response called phototaxis. Many insects move toward light, perhaps as a way to escape dark or entrapping surroundings. But if this were the explanation for the clusters around a light, you might expect them to bump straight into the source. This theory does little to explain the wild circling behavior.

Still, another idea was that insects might mistake a nearby light for the Moon as they attempted to use celestial navigation. Many insects reference the Moon to keep their course at night.

This strategy relies on how objects at great distances seem to hover in place as you move along a straight path. A steady Moon indicates that you have not made any unintentional turns, as you might if you were buffeted by a gust of wind. Nearer objects, however, don’t appear to follow you in the sky but drift behind as you move past.

The celestial navigation theory held that insects worked to keep this light source steady, turning sharply in a failed attempt to fly straight. An elegant idea, but this model predicts that many flights will spiral inward to a collision, which doesn’t usually match the orbits we see. So what’s really going on?

Turning their backs to the light

To examine this question in detail, we and our colleagues captured high-speed videos of insects around different light sources to precisely determine flight paths and body postures, both in the lab at Imperial College London and at two field sites in Costa Rica, CIEE and the Estación Biológica. We found that their flight patterns weren’t a close match for any existing model.

Rather, a broad swath of insects consistently pointed their backs toward the lights. This is a known behavior called the dorsal light response. In nature, assuming that more light comes down from the sky than up from the ground, this response helps keep insects in the proper orientation to fly.

But pointing their backs toward nearby artificial lights alters their flight paths. Just as airplanes bank to turn, sometimes rolling until the ground seems nearly straight out your window, banking insects turn as well. When their backs orient to a nearby light, the resulting bank loops them around the light, circling but rarely colliding.

These orbiting paths were only one of the behaviors we observed. When insects flew directly under a light, they often arched upward as it passed behind them, keeping their backs to the bulb until, eventually flying straight up, they stalled and fell out of the air. And even more compelling, when flying directly over a light, insects tended to flip upside down, again turning their backs to the light but then abruptly crashing.

Why have a dorsal light response?

Although light at night can harm other animals – for example, by diverting migrating birds into urban areas – larger animals don’t seem to lose their vertical orientation. So why do insects, the oldest and most species-rich group of flyers, rely on a response that leaves them so vulnerable?

It may have to do with their small size. Larger animals can sense gravity directly with sensory organs pulled by its acceleration or any acceleration. Humans, for example, use the vestibular system of our inner ear, which regulates our sense of balance and usually gives us a good sense of which way is down.

But insects have only small sensory structures. And especially as they perform rapid flight maneuvers, acceleration offers only a poor indication of which way is down. Instead, they seem to bet on the brightness of the sky.

Before modern lighting, the sky was usually brighter than the ground, day or night, so it provided a fairly reliable cue for a small active flyer hoping to keep a steady orientation. The artificial lights that sabotage this ability by cueing insects to fly in circles are relatively recent.

The growing problem of nighttime lighting

As new technology spreads, lights that pervade the night are proliferating faster than ever. With the introduction of cheap, bright, broad-spectrum LEDs, many areas, such as large cities, never see a dark night.

Insects aren’t the only creatures affected. Light pollution disrupts circadian rhythms and physiological processes in other animals, plants, and humans, often with serious health consequences.

But insects trapped around a light seem to get the worst of it. Unable to secure food, easily spotted by predators, and prone to exhaustion, many die before the morning comes.

In principle, light pollution is one of the easiest things to fix, often by just flipping a switch. Restricting outdoor lighting to useful, targeted warm light, no brighter than necessary, and for no longer than necessary, can greatly improve the health of nocturnal ecosystems. The same practices that are good for insects help restore views of the night sky: Over one-third of the world population lives in areas where the Milky Way is never visible.

Although insects circling around a light are a fascinating spectacle, it is certainly better for the insects and the benefits they provide to humans when we leave the night unlit and let them go about the activities they so masterfully perform under the night sky.

Dietary supplements are a big business. The industry made almost $39 billion in revenue in 2022, and with very little regulation and oversight, it stands to keep growing.

The marketing of dietary supplements has been quite effective, with 77 percent of Americans reporting feeling that the supplement industry is trustworthy. The idea of taking your health into your own hands is appealing, and supplements are popular with athletes, parents, and people trying to recover more quickly from a cold or flu, just to name a few.

A 2024 study found that approximately 1 in 10 adolescents have used nonprescribed weight loss and weight control products, including dietary supplements.

Notably, that systematic review found that nonprescribed diet pill use was significantly higher than the use of nonprescribed laxatives and diuretics for weight management. These types of unhealthy weight control behaviors are associated with both worsened mental health and physical health outcomes.

As a licensed clinical social worker specializing in treating anxiety disorders and eating disorders and a biomedical research director, we’ve seen firsthand the harm that these supplements can do based on unfounded beliefs. The unregulated market of dietary supplements is setting consumers up to be misled and potentially seriously harmed by these products.

The wild west

The Food and Drug Administration specifies that supplements must contain a “dietary ingredient” such as vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, live microbials, concentrates, and extracts, among others.

Unfortunately, manufacturers can claim that a product is a supplement even when it doesn’t meet those criteria, such as products containing the drug tianeptine, a highly addictive drug that can mimic the biological action of opioids. Some of these products are labeled as dietary supplements but are anything but.

Products containing kratom, a substance with opioid-like effects, which are sold over the counter in many gas stations, claim to be herbal supplements but are mislabeled.

Under a 1994 law, dietary supplements are classified as food, not as drugs. This means dietary supplements are not required to prove efficacy, unlike drugs. Regulators also don’t take action on a product until it is shown to cause harm.

However, the FDA’s website states that “many dietary supplements contain ingredients that have strong biological effects which may conflict with a medicine you are taking or a medical condition you may have. Products containing hidden drugs are also sometimes falsely marketed as dietary supplements, putting consumers at even greater risk.”

In other words, supplements are regulated as food instead of drugs, even though they can interact with medications and may be laced with hidden drugs not included on the label.

Manufacturers of dietary supplements can make claims about their products that fall into three categories: health claims, nutrient content claims, and claims about the product’s function, structure, or both, all without needing to provide supporting evidence.

Misbranding and false advertising are rampant with dietary supplements, including false claims of curing cancer, improving immune health, improving cognitive functioning, improving fertility, improving cardiovascular health, and, of course, promoting weight loss and weight control.

The FDA is cracking down

You can find supplements that claim to be good for just about every health condition, concern, or goal, so it should be no surprise that there are supplements marketed for weight loss.

In August 2021, the FDA cracked down on some of these weight loss products because of the presence of undeclared drugs. For example, of the 72 products recalled, the drug sibutramine, sold as Meridia, was found in 68 of them.

While the FDA may take further action beyond the recalls, the agency acknowledged that it is not able to test every weight loss supplement for contamination with drugs.

These crackdowns demonstrate some progress, though several issues remain. Warning label placement, ingredients, and beliefs based on misleading or false advertising are still highly problematic.

Some weight loss supplements may have FDA warnings on them. Of those that do, the disclaimers are rarely displayed on the front of the product label, so consumers are less likely to see them.

Ingredients in weight loss supplements can and do have adverse effects. They have caused people to be admitted to the emergency room for cardiovascular and swallowing problems, including in young, seemingly healthy people.

Eating disorders

Mental health concerns and eating disorders are on the rise. As a result, researchers are examining unhealthy weight control behaviors, including the use of dietary supplements and how accessible they are to adolescents and children.

People who have eating disorders often suffer related health issues such as bone loss, osteoporosis, and vitamin deficiencies. In response, their doctors may prescribe dietary supplements like calcium and vitamin D and nutritional supplement shakes. But these are not the dietary supplements of concern.

The concern is with supplements that promote weight loss, muscle building, or both.

People with eating disorders may be attracted to dietary supplements that claim quick and pain-free weight loss or muscle gain. Additionally, dietary supplement users may struggle with an increase in compulsive exercise or other unhealthy weight control behaviors.

Diet pill and supplement use has also been associated with an increased risk of developing eating disorders and disordered eating, as well as low self-esteem, depression, and substance use. While dietary supplements do not solely cause eating disorders or disordered eating, they are one contributing factor that may be addressed with preventive measures and regulations.

The allure of protein powders and fitness supplements

Protein powders and other fitness supplements also have wide appeal. Research shows that girls are more at risk than boys for using weight loss supplements. However a growing problem in boys is the use of fitness supplements such as protein powder and creatine products, a compound that supplies energy to the muscles.

The use of fitness supplements sometimes signifies a preoccupation with body shape and size. For example, a 2022 study found that protein powder consumption in adolescence was associated with future use of steroids in emerging adulthood.

Protein powders claim to build lean muscles, while creatine boasts of providing energy for short-term, intense exercise.

Protein itself is not harmful at recommended doses. However, protein powders may contain unknown ingredients, such as certain toxins or extra and excessive sugar. They can also be dangerous when used in excess and to replace other foods that possess vital nutrients.

While creatine can usually be safely used in adults, overuse can lead to health problems and is not recommended for minors. Ultimately, the impact of long-term use of these supplements, especially in adolescents, is unstudied.

Possible solutions

One proposed regulation by researchers at Harvard University includes taxing dietary supplements whose labels tout weight loss benefits.

Another policy recommendation involves banning the sale of dietary supplements and other weight loss products to protect minors from these underregulated and potentially dangerous products.

In 2023, New York successfully passed legislation that banned the sale of these products to minors, while states including Colorado, California, and Massachusetts have considered or are considering similar action.

Ultimately, medical professionals recommend that parents and caregivers encourage their children to get protein and vitamins from whole foods instead of turning to supplements and powders. They also recommend encouraging teens to focus on balanced nutrition, sleep and recovery, and a variety of resistance, strength, and conditioning training.

If you’ve ever wanted a fresh start in life, look no further than the late 2000s sci-fi series Dollhouse for what a true clean slate could be like. Released 15 years ago this February, Dollhouse was an underrated (and short-lived) two-season series that explored the consequences of wiping a person’s entire memory. In the show, a company employs “Actives” or human dolls to work for wealthy individuals. Before each new assignment, the dolls get their memories destroyed, allowing them to seamlessly turn from assassins one day to lovers the next.

While we don’t currently have the technology to Control-D human memory, we are far closer to that reality than you might think. Lawrence Patihis, a senior lecturer at the University of Portsmouth who researches memory distortions, tells Inverse that it’s entirely possible to implant false memories into someone’s mind. In fact, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve “recalled” a fake memory at some point.

Everyday Memory Inception

From Total Recall to Inception, science-fiction movies have put forth fictional interpretations of false memory implantation involving high-tech gadgetry. In Dollhouse, there’s an entire corporation devoted to the practice with multiple underground facilities and teams of sketchy scientists. But real-life examples are often far simpler: They occur through the power of manipulative suggestion.

Psychologist Elizabeth Loftus popularized the concept of false memories in the 1990s with her research showing how participants were led to believe that entire false events — like getting lost in a mall as a child — happened to them when presented with these fake details after the fact.

Another infamous example is the George Franklin case, wherein Franklin’s daughter shared false memories — brought about through hypnosis — in court about her father committing a murder. Franklin was later exonerated of the crime.

“It is important to note that not everyone is susceptible to these manipulations, and in most of Loftus’ famous experiments, the majority of participants do not, in fact, develop memories for events that did not happen to them,” Jesse Rissman, an associate professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, tells Inverse.

Certain individuals are more susceptible, including people with schizophrenia, children, and the elderly. Recent research found that more than a fifth of participants reported false memories after being exposed to fake news about the Covid-19 pandemic. The participants who had false memories said they remembered hearing about or seeing the fake news described in the study — even though it never happened. Individuals with greater critical thinking skills or knowledge of Covid-19 were less likely to report false memories.

Even so, some experts argue no one is immune to the lure of false memories. The University of Portsmouth’s Patihis conducted research that identified false memories in individuals with “highly superior autobiographical memory.”

The Brain Science Behind False Memories

So, what’s happening in the brain when false memories occur? Our brains use two mechanisms to recall memories: Consolidation and reconsolidation. Consolidation happens when our brains are recalling events that just happened to turn short-term memories into long-term ones. Reconsolidation happens when our brains are remembering events already stored in our long-term memories. When we do this, our minds become vulnerable to alteration, and that’s when false memories can take hold, says Rissman.

If someone is recalling a long-term memory, and an alternate account of that memory is presented to them, the mind can blend those accounts and insert new — false — details.

“There are some intriguing experimental techniques to exploit this reconsolidation process so as to update and change past memories, for instance by making them less emotionally laden or by altering specific details,” Rissman says.

Such experiments might sound downright nefarious, but there could be potential benefits to disrupting reconsolidation. Some research suggests people with PTSD could benefit from memory manipulation, which would dampen specific memories. On the flip side, individuals with Alzheimer’s could benefit from enhancing memories.

Can We Detect False Memories?

Research shows it’s hard to distinguish false memories from true memories in scans of the brain, also known as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). When you take an fMRI of the brain, the same neural networks activate regardless of whether you’re recalling a memory or imagining a future moment.

“The consensus seems to be that we cannot tell false memories from true memories,” Patihis says.

But over the past decade, neuroscientists have gotten closer to inducing and mapping false memories in the brain — albeit in rodent minds rather than human ones — using a method known as optogenetics. Scientists in a 2013 study successfully manipulated cells in mice’s hippocampus, which is a region of the brain critical for memory.

Using a surgically implanted device, researchers were able to activate a precise set of neurons at the right time so mice froze as if they had received an electrical shock to the foot, even though no such shock had been administered to the mice.

The researchers were “essentially laying the building blocks for a false memory,” according to Rissman.

We can’t yet safely apply optogenetics to induce false memories in humans, though Rissman says research is underway to use these same techniques to restore vision or hearing.

“It is also far from clear whether more complex memories could be implanted [in humans],” Rissman says.

In other words: No one is going to be turned into a human doll anytime soon. For now, we’ll have to amuse ourselves with sci-fi worlds like Dollhouse which toy with the consequences of an often-coveted clean slate.
