The Priest's Wife by A G Rivett will be launched on Friday, 20 October at Pwerdy/The Powerhouse in Llandysul. Back in the 1930's, the Powerhouse brought electricity to Llandysul from the power of the river Teifi, surging below. Now it houses an arts centre. As we move into October, Gillian is gearing up to launch the first new book coming out from her publishing imprint, Pantolwen Press. The Priest's Wife will be launched later in the month at the home base of Bryn Glas Books, Llandysul in West Wales. By the way, Pantolwen is Welsh for Hollow of the Wheel, and is named after a place where there used to be an old water mill.

The main events of the Aberaeron Book Festival will be held on Sat and Sun, 21 and 22 October at the Memorial Hall, Aberaeron, with a poetry evening on Friday 20th at a venue to be confirmed. The Festival is being organised by poet, Karen Gemma Brewer and by Niki Brewer who together run the Gwisgo Bookworm bookshop in Aberaeron.

Itʼs been a busy time getting ready for the launch of The Priestʼs Wife. Interested readers will be able to order print-on-demand copies on-line. But we want to get the book into bookshops too, so there will also be a litho print-run done by our neighbours up the road at the first-rate printing house, Gomer Press.

Alice Kollerʼs journey to self-discovery happens through her journal. She put her Philosophy PhD to use, writing: “All that accumulated discipline can now be shaped into the one tool I need: to be able to say with perfect care what I want to say. I push my saying to the point of saying what I mean.”

Gillianʼs blog post on Alice Koller relates to her personal memory. She spent some time as a nanny on Nantucket herself, in Sconset, the self-same area where Kollerʼs memoir is set. She also lived with German Shepherds and came to love the breed a lot. Here she is with Folly.

Just posted a blog based on Alice Kollerʼs memoir, An Unknown Woman. Sub-title of the first edition, ‘A Journey to Self-discovery,ʼ it describes three months of soul-searching on Nantucket island in the company of a German Shepherd puppy. Written in the 60ʼs, published in the 80ʼs, itʼs a book with a following, thoʼ out of print now.

In traditions bound by ritual purity, there is not much room for compassion. In Things Fall Apart the wish to live a life that prioritises compassion drives Nwoye to convert to Christianity. But in her blog post, Gillian writes of how, through its links to the power structures of Empire and government, the Christian Church has often been led to betray this central teaching of the Gospels.

The themes of compassion, sensitivity and strength are key to Chinua Achebeʼs novel Things Fall Apart. In the main character, Okonkwo, we see how strength alone is too brittle to enable a man to survive the changing times.

Chinua Achebe grew up on the cusp of social change. His parents were Christian converts but many of his wider family members were not. Growing up in the village of Ogidi in Eastern Nigeria he heard the traditional Igbo stories and witnessed the traditional festivals.
