Discovering Confidence and Empowerment through Karate at Shotokan United Kenya.
By Kathaambi.
When I first walked into Shotokan United Kenya, I was filled with nervous excitement. I had always been interested in martial arts, but I had never taken the plunge to join a dojo until now. From my very first class, I knew that karate was going to be a transformative experience for me.
As a woman living in Nairobi, I have experienced my fair share of harassment and violence. I have often felt helpless and vulnerable, wondering what I would do if I found myself in a dangerous situation. Karate offered me a way to feel empowered and strong, both physically and emotionally.
In the beginning, I struggled with the basic techniques. I was out of shape and uncoordinated, and I often felt discouraged. But with the encouragement of my trainers and fellow students, I kept pushing myself. And slowly but surely, I began to feel more confident in my abilities.
One of the things I appreciate most about Shotokan United Kenya is the sense of community that it offers. The dojo is a place where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to learn and grow. My Sensei Joshua is a wonderful trainer and mentor, and he has helped me to develop not only my physical skills but also my inner discipline and focus.
Another trainer who has been a tremendous influence on me is Sensei Musoga. He has a gift for motivating his students and pushing them to reach their full potential. And he has a unique way of combining physical training with spiritual guidance, making the dojo feel like a sanctuary for the mind, body, and soul.
Through karate, I have discovered a sense of humility and a willingness to learn from others. I have also learned the value of hard work and perseverance, as I have worked my way up from one belt to the next. And perhaps most importantly, I have learned the power of walking away from conflict, rather than engaging in it.
As I continue on my karate journey, I know that
