There’s a common theme when it comes to the investigation of MMIP cases... and it’s not a favorable one. Say Their Names - episode 1 drops December 29. Join me as we take a look at the various systems failing our indigenous brothers and sisters across the country.
This audio clip from my interview with enrolled Crow Tribal member, Renae Kindness sums up what you can expect to hear on release day. So many questions, so few answers. And too many families left in the dark.
Drop a 💔 if you’ll be listening.
The wind was wicked on Saturday. It ripped signs, blew away lunches, left windburn on cheeks. But somehow this dress stayed in place, never needing to be re-secured.
When people saw it hanging they’d stop and watch it wave in the wind. Some knew the story, others did not. Some asked about it, others just watched in silence.
This dress was a gift from Mrs. Minnesota, Maricella Herrera, to Henny Scott’s mother, Paula. Maricella dedicates considerable efforts to advocating for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls.
Paula shared this story with me as she pulled the dress from it’s garment bag and secured it to a hanger. Maricella made the trip to Montana to give her the dress and visit Henny’s grave.
It’s a beautiful tribute without any doubt. But in that moment the real beauty was in Paula. She makes eye contact when she speaks to you and her voice is gentle but proud. And the care with which she handles this dress is that of a mother caring for her child. Which, I suppose she is. This dress represents a piece of Henny’s legacy and the fact that her life mattered and will be remembered.
Even the wind was no match for the power of the dress. It could be felt that day. I felt it. The families felt it. Strangers felt it.
Can you feel it?
