2 May, 2024: One of the five puppies drinking milk from their mother in the middle of the road was driven over by a car driver who did not apply brakes on time.
Initially this was considered an accident as car driver claimed dogs came suddenly in front of his car and he couldn't see them at all, but later when CCTV footage was checked, things turned out to be different as driver did not apply brakes, honked or even waited for dogs to clear the road, instead negligently kept on dragging the dogs under his SUV until one of the puppies was crushed severely and maiming another, resulting in agonizing pain and heart sunking wails that gathered attention of nearby residents. As the skull cracked due to the impact, puppy died within few seconds of the incident before even he could be touched, let alone to be taken to a veterinarian.
Female dog who recently gave birth to a liter of six has already lost one of her puppies who was found dead on 22 April under a car, causes of which couldn't be ascertained due to lack of CCTV at the backside of the society. This time however CCTV footage assisted to find the culprit who is a resident in the same society and FIR has been lodged after finding details of the owner from the car number visible in the CCTV footage. Case is under investigation by Ghaziabad police and further details will be added as investigation proceeds and case is tried in court.
Many people dislike dogs but they forget that killing or maiming dogs is illegal and punishable under Indian Penal Code. Feeding dogs in residential areas cannot be penalized by Resident Welfare Associations but instead designated feeding areas should demarcated by RWAs to ensure that animals don't starve, also considering well being of society residents.
