𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙚: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙪𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙪 𝙅𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙚 (2012)

In the Philippine context, parricide refers to the crime of killing one's own parent, ascendant grandparent or great-grandparent, or other close relatives such as a child, spouse, or sibling, as specified under the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines.

Specifically, Article 246 of the RPC defines parricide as the unlawful killing of a father, mother, child, or any of the direct descendants or ascendants, or a spouse.

In our episode for today, we will tackle one of the least discussed parricide cases that happened in the 2010s.

On November 28, 2012, the authorities discovered the body of 49-year-old Marilou Jorge in the trunk of her gold Honda Civic parked near her home in North Matrix Ville Subdivision, Caloocan City.

Earlier that day, residents in the area complained to village officials about an unpleasant smell coming from what they described at the time as an abandoned vehicle.

Little did they know at the time that the authorities would stumble upon a case that has more questions than answers.

Mayor Antonio Halili of Tanuan Batangas was a well-known figure back in the day for his "walk of shame" campaign, where he paraded drug suspects through the streets, a method that garnered both support and criticism nationwide, which critics would argue that it violated human rights and due process.

Some have compared him to former president Rodrigo Duterte’s hardline stance against crime.

But the irony here is that a former Duterte ally recently revealed during the investigations in the House of Representatives Quad Committee claiming that Duterte was behind the assassination of Mayor Halili, although the investigation is still ongoing as of now.

On July 2, 2018, Mayor Halili was assassinated during a flag ceremony at the city hall. A sniper shot him, causing immediate chaos and raising questions about the motive behind the killing. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Mayor Halili's murder was speculated to be linked to his anti-drug campaign, political rivalries, or personal vendettas. Some theories suggested he was targeted for his involvement in the illegal drug trade.

Hindi maituturing na paglabag sa right to privacy ang paggamit ng online chat logs at videos bilang ebidensya sa mga kasong kriminal, ayon sa Korte Suprema .

Binanggit ng SC ang isinulat na desisyon ni Associate Justice Mario V. Lopez kung saan napatunayang guilty si Eul Vincent O. Rodriguez sa kasong qualified trafficking in persons, sa ilalim ng Anti-Trafficking of Persons Act, gamit ang Facebook at ibang online platform.

Inaresto si Rodriguez sa isang entrapment operation noong 2014 matapos alukin ang isang 14 anyos para gumawa ng live n**e show.

Hinatulan si Rodriguez sa Regional Trial Court. Pinagtibay ito ng Court of Appeals.

Sa pagpapatibay ng hatol, sinabi ng SC na ang mga video at recording ng chat logs ni Rodriguez at ng mga pulis ay maaaring tanggaping ebidensya.

Tinanggihan ng SC ang argumento ni Rodriguez na hindi dapat tanggapin ang mga ebidensya dahil paglabag ito sa kaniyang privacy rights.

"As the chat logs and videos presented by Rodriguez were submitted as evidence to assess his criminal liability for qualified trafficking, his right to privacy was not violated," giit ng SC.

Sinentensyahan si Rodriguez ng life imprisonment at pinagmulta ng P2 milyon.

A 49-year-old Filipina’s death in Burnaby, Canada sent shockwaves among the Filipinos in her community as she was killed by two young men aged 21 years old and 15 years old.

Her burned remains would be discovered in Greentree Village Park, near a children’s playground.

Her family, friends, and the rest of her community have been in mourning since her violent death.

“She did not deserve her fate,” said her longtime friend. Maria Cecilia Loreto, who often went by Mycel, was among the many hardworking Filipinos abroad, striving to attain a better life. Through her best efforts, she was able to bring her family to Canada.

However, she would not be able to spend any more time with them as her life was gruesomely taken away by two men. It was believed that the victim and suspects knew each other, and that the incident was planned.

Maria Cecilia Loreto was better known as Maricel or Mycel, a combination of her names Maria and Cecilia, to her friends and family. She arrived in Vancouver, Canada in 2011, and has since been working multiple jobs; one including at a Superstore.

As of recording this episode, the filing of candidacies for the upcoming 2025 midterm elections has concluded, which means it is election season all over again in the Philippines.

With that being said, throughout the course of our country’s history various political events that have led to violence and killings have occurred.

One of the most infamous incidents that changed the course of our country’s political landscape is The Plaza Miranda Bombing in 1971.

The Plaza Miranda Bombing, at the time, was viewed as one of the most infamous tragedies that happened during a political event.

On the evening of August 21, 1971, the Liberal Party, which was the opposition party against former dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s Nacionalista Party, was holding a political rally at Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila.

As the rally was in full swing, two grenades were thrown onto the stage where the Liberal Party leaders were gathered. The explosions caused chaos and devastation, resulting in nine deaths and injuring 95 others. Among the casualties were a five-year-old child and Ben Roxas, a photographer for the Manila Times.

Before the coronavirus disease affected our daily lives, the month of April was the most exciting month for those students who will finish their studies from a long school journey, as it was a time when students graduated from their respective levels.

On April 8, 2019, the brutal killing of a 14-year-old girl happened near Cogon Cruz Integrated School, Danao City in Cebu.

An unidentified person reported a complaint to the authorities that there was a foul odor coming from the school's septic tank. Together with the barangay officials' help, the police discovered a young girl’s co**se.

They identified the victim as Tesa Marie Ygay. Those who were at the scene were shocked after discovering the young girl’s lifeless body with multiple stab wounds.

The upcoming 2025 midterm elections are near, which means the future of our leaders will be based on our votes this coming May.

Through the years, there have been various incidents or initiatives from well-known or infamous politicians that broke or paved the way for their careers in public service.

On April 23, 2012, a supposedly peaceful dismantling of a wet market quickly escalated into violence, resulting in one death and 40 injured people after the informal settlers of the Silverio Compound, fearing that they would lose their homes, confronted the police along Sucat Road in Parañaque City.

The sole casualty was Arnel Leonor, a 19-year-old resident of the said residential compound, lying on the pavement with a fatal gunshot wound in the head. The police brought him to the nearest medical facility, but he was declared dead on arrival.

This violent demolition in Paranaque City sparked discussions that highlighted the complex issues surrounding urban development, housing rights, and the need for more humane and inclusive approaches to addressing informal settlements.

An 18-year-old woman was found dead inside a lodging house in Toledo City, Cebu.

The victim was found with her hands tied and her mouth stuffed when she was found by the room boy for her supposed check out.

The police said the victim told her family last Thursday that she will just go to her classmate’s house to participate in a dance practice. But she never returned home.

Investigation showed that the victim had a meeting with a man whom she met online. The police said that the two checked-in at the lodging house.

Through a CCTV footage from a nearby establishment, the authorities were able to identify the 43-year-old suspect.

“We showed the room boy the enhanced CCTV footage that we have and he was able to positively identify the man who was with the victim then,” said Police Lt. Col. Manolo Salvatierra of Toledo City Police Station in Filipino.

An autopsy was conducted to determine the victim's cause of death.
