Julian Schnabel: Bouquet of Mistakes
Pace Gallery | New York
Through Oct 28, 2023

Julian Schnabel unveils new works created in parallel with his seventh feature film, "In the Hand of Dante", an adaptation of Nick Tosches's eponymous novel. Painting and filmmaking coalesce, allowing subject matter to fluidly traverse mediums, offering enigmatic narratives intertwining his film and the paintings. Spanning four decades, Schnabel's inventive approach, epitomized by pioneering plate paintings and works on velvet, obliterates conventional boundaries between abstraction and figuration, reinvigorating the contemporary art landscape. In this display, he explores the materiality of velvet, delving into its symbolic weight across art history, paying homage to luminaries like Titian and Goya while forging a contemporary narrative with this distinctive medium.

Pace | New York
Closes August 18, 2023

While most renowned for his sculptures, Smith initially pursued architecture, collaborating with Frank Lloyd Wright on Usonian homes. Transitioning to sculpture in the 1950s, he found inspiration in natural phenomena, exploring geometric forms like octahedrons. Integrating chance and chaos, Smith's sculptures became a distinctive language of abstraction, resonating amid the Minimalist movement. His deep connection with architecture, science, and philosophy fosters novel perceptions of the surrounding environment, as his sculptures, aptly termed "presences," radiate undeniable charisma and influence.

Pace Gallery announced the addition of 27-year-old painter Pam Evelyn to their list of represented artists. The artist’s inaugural exhibition, "A Handful of Dust," will feature new paintings crafted over several months between London and Cornwall at Pace's London gallery from September 6 to 30.

Working with oil paint on raw linen canvas, Evelyn's process is an intense cycle of renewal, constantly articulating her distinct visual language. She considers herself a witness rather than a painter, responding intuitively to the demands of the material, allowing the painting to dictate its direction. Evelyn's large-scale works reveal a luminous quality as she layers glazes to create a sense of urgency and precariousness. Challenging herself by seeking discomfort and inconvenience, her paintings embody visual and spatial tension, characterized by the push and pull of gesture and form in constant friction.

Greene Naftali announces representation of Diamond Stingily.

Through spare and emotive vignettes, Diamond Stingily explores the commemorative power of objects and their ability to evoke introspection and collective experiences. Her choice of readymade materials, often with distinct class markers and rooted in local architectures, highlights issues of safety and exclusion. With a keen awareness of personal memory and its underlying politics, Stingily transforms ordinary objects into consequential and evocative works of art through her formal restraint.

Stingily’s Entryways (2021) is on view at The Museum of Modern Art Collection 1970s–Present exhibition featuring items from the New York museum’s permanent collection. Her first solo presentation at Greene Naftali will open this November.

Just before everyone headed off for the weekend, Frieze made waves announcing the acquisition of The Armory Show and EXPO CHICAGO. The move further solidifies the consolidation of the global art fair landscape. Since the reopening of in-person fairs following the COVID-19 pandemic, the art fair market has become dominated by Art Basel and Frieze, leaving smaller regional and niche players on the sidelines.

Simon Fox, CEO of Frieze, described these acquisitions as a transformative moment for the organization, allowing them to expand their presence in the United States. With these purchases, Frieze brings two of the longest-running events under its umbrella. By strengthening their presence in both cities, Frieze aims to build upon the strong record it has established through Frieze New York and Frieze Los Angeles.
