Let’s talk about: billionaire-owned media 💰

Since Amazon founder Jeff Bezos bought The Washington Post in 2013, the paper has seen both an increase in traffic and in increase in scrutiny.

According to many journalists, Bezos’ ownership of The Post constitutes an ‘almost entirely unaddressed conflict of interest’ (Dan Froomkin, CJR)

The Post has a long history of independence - its tagline is “Democracy dies in darkness” - yet recent editions suggest this may no longer be the case.

Here are some of the headlines which have caused uproar:

“Think twice before changing the tax rules to soak billionaires”
“The Middle East doesn’t lack democracy. It has too much”
“America suffers from too much democracy”
“It’s time to give the elites a bigger say in choosing the president”

What is the Bill of Rights? 🇬🇧

A few weeks ago, the UK government introduced the Bill of Rights in the House of Commons.

Justice secretary, Dominic Raab, says the new legislation ‘will strengthen traditional UK rights such as freedom of speech’ which are ‘under attack’ from ‘stifling political correctness’.

Humans rights campaigners, on the other hand, call it the ‘Rights Removal Bill’ - arguing that the new laws will not safeguard human rights, but further weaken them.

📣 Tories lose seats in Wakefield and Tiverton & Honiton in ‘disastrous’ by-election 📣

The Conservatives suffered a double defeat in yesterday’s by-election, losing majorities in Wakefield and Tiverton & Horton to Labour and the Lib Dems (respectively).

Moments after the by-election results were confirmed, Conservative Party co-chairman, Oliver Dowden, resigned.

Lib Dem candidate, Richard Foord, wiped out a 24,239 majority to win a seat the Tories had held ever since its creation in 1997.

Foord: ““Tonight, the people of Tiverton and Honiton have spoken for Britain. They’ve sent a loud and clear message: It’s time for Boris Johnson to go. And go now.

Every day Boris Johnson clings to office, he brings further shame, chaos and neglect. Communities like ours are on their knees."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he would "listen" to voters but would "keep going" in the job, despite the double defeat.

Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, said his party's victory in Wakefield showed the Conservatives were "out of touch and out of ideas".

16/06/2022

📣 Boris Johnson’s former ethics advisor, Lord Geidt, says he quit after being put in an “impossible and odious” position over the plan to risk breaking ministerial code 📣

The news comes after Lord Geidt said there was a “legitimate question” about whether the PM broke ministerial rules over Partygate.

His predecessor, Sir Alex Allan, also quit the role in 2020 after Boris Johnson overruled him over a report into alleged bullying by Home Secretary Priti Patel.

The government source has said that Lord Geidt’s resignation came as a “total surprise and a mystery” to the PM.

15/06/2022

🚨 BREAKING 🚨 The EU has announced it is taking legal action against the UK government over its plans to scrap parts of the post-Brexit deal for Northern Ireland.⁣

On Monday, ministers tabled a bill which aims to change trade, tax and governance arrangements made in the 2020 deal.⁣

The treaty was signed by both parties, but the UK says it has disrupted trade and power-sharing in Northern Ireland. The EU, however, says overriding parts of the deal would break international law.⁣

What's the Northern Ireland Protocol?⁣
- It's a special arrangement which keeps Northern Ireland in the EU's single market for goods and avoids a hard border with the Republic of Ireland. The protocol means that there are now checks on goods moving between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which has been criticised by unionist politicians. ⁣

The legal steps taken by the EU could eventually lead to the UK being fined under a dispute process led by the European Court of Justice.⁣

We'll keep you updated on the proceedings 📣⁣
