before I get into a history rant… what’s your favourite, first or last?
Spending most of my time here in Budapest doing the less conventional things. History is something that I find to be incredibly important, especially as a North American whom are typically less educated in world history.
I’ve spent my days here learning about Hungary and their horrific history of N**i and then Soviet occupation. How that shaped the culture and the people who live here.
Understanding how deep the roots truly run here in Europe. How many countries have been shaken to their core over and over again at the hands of the worlds most powerful players.
How Budapest itself was once three, and not until the end of the 1800s, did it become one. Hungary did not regain its independence from the Soviet Union until the 1990s. They endured a brutal four and a half decades of Soviet invasion.
The population was once nearly 1/4 Jewish and Hungary was considered a safe zone for a period of time for the Jewish community. The Second World War changed that as the N**is occupied and deported over 400,000 members of the Jewish community to Auschwitz.
If you’ve made it this far you can clearly see that Hungary has had one hell of a historical past. So much to learn from the locals, their traditions, and opinions of their mind bending history.
