One of my sweet customers sent me an article about the difference between biodegradable and compostable, which I thought was really interesting.

However, neither of these will deliver environmental benefits without proper disposal. And this is the catch 22, we need these new materials to move in the right direction environmentally, but the infrastructure and consumer education must happen simultaneously or there will be no net environmental benefit.

In order to be compostable there are specific conditions that must be met; "they must break down in 180 days or less in a commercial compost facility, and the materials must not leave ANY toxic materials behind." Whereas biodegradable is more of a general term for materials that can naturally break down over time but there is no specific timeline it must meet, so that could mean thousands of years until it’s completely decomposed. Further, there is "no guarantee that toxic residues won’t be left over.” This is why some plastics can actually be called biodegradable even though they will stay on earth potentially disturbing natural ecosystems for thousands of years.

Recycled glass is used to make new glass containers, fiberglass insulation, and additives for asphalt!

Barring all of that, the biggest reason I do it is because it won’t take up space in the landfill! Once the landfill is full, that means another one farther away will have to be opened, destroying habitats, and leading to more carbon emissions because of the longer hauling distance.

Secondhand Soil and its customers have kept almost 36,000 pounds of glass out of the landfill! 18 tons! Every ton of municipal trash kept out of the landfill is the equivalent of taking 1.5 cars off the road or powering 75% of a family home for a year!

It’s WORLD SOIL DAY! What! Soil is a valuable, biodiverse, nonrenewable (unless some crazy lady is out here MAKING it from TRASH) resource. So happy to learn of this day and that I’m maybe not the only crazy one. 😂😂

The compost bin that started it all. I got this on March 1st, 2018 to do some backyard composting. Secondhand Soil’s first pickup was December 3rd, 2019. That year and a half changed my life, and hopefully the lives of future generations!

The toddler in the video is now a little girl who watches me lead by example. I want to make sure I’m setting a good one. ♥️♥️♻️
