It was clear to both the Germans and the British in 1940 that whoever controlled the airspace above Europe would be able to bring the civilian and military infrastructure and morale to a halt with effective bombing raids. The first attempts by The Royal Air Force to bomb Germany were largely ineffective, but soon they were involving 1000 aircraft at a time and when the US Airforce joined the allies whole cities would be razed to the ground. For civilians used to a “front” far from home it was a bloody baptism.

Just before 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 7, 1941, a surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service was made against the U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The United States was a neutral country at the time; the attack led the U.S. to formally enter World War II on the side of the Allies the following day.
President Roosevelt called it a date which will live in infamy.
In early December The War Channel will be showing Prelude to Pearl Harbour and The Fall Of Singapore to pay respects to the servicemen and civilians that lost their lives that day.
