Last month I was lucky enough to shoot with this amazing couple, to create imagery that would celebrate their recent engagement. ⁠

As some of you might know, I took part in this year! This meant that I tried to source most of my Christmas gifts from small businesses rather than large companies.⁠

Hey, I'm back! Can you believe we are about to enter 2022?! This last month has absolutely flown, but I've enjoyed every second. My Christmas was full of catch-ups with family and friends, and lotsssss of good food 😍 I'm planning on having a pretty low-key NYE, hopefully enjoying some fireworks at midnight.⁠

I'm so excited to show you the new look of Surf Side Socials! When I started this business, I just whipped up some graphics on Canva and thought "Hey, that looks pretty cool."⁠

Now I've basically done the same thing again, but I've thought long and hard about it 😂 I'm absolutely loving the brand I'm developing and think the new colours really represent my love for the land, sand, and sea. I hope you love the rebrand too!⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠

There's a lot of new faces here, so I thought it was time to do a little introductory post!⁠

✨ I'm Chelsea, the owner of Surf Side Socials. I've been a photographer for around 10 years now, mainly working in landscapes but found a love for lifestyle and product photography in 2020. ⁠
⁠
✨I'm 22 years old and have lived on the Bellarine Peninsula for my whole life, and absolutely love this place I call home! Surrounded by beaches, the peninsula and surf coast inspired my business name.⁠

✨ I just finished my Bachelor's degree in communications and digital media and will officially graduate and receive my degree in early December. I'm so excited to officially be a communications specialist!⁠

Do you do any of these things? 👀 Read on...

1. FOLLOWING AND UNFOLLOWING
This is a sure-fire way to get your account temporarily banned, fast! Mass following and unfollowing people makes the Instagram algorithm think you're not a real user, which will result your account being suspended temporarily 🤖

2. MASS LIKING
Spam alert! Well, that's what the algorithm thinks. Similar to following and unfollowing, mass liking and commenting is another way to get your account suspended as Instagram will think you're acting spammy!

3. POSTING AND GHOSTING
Nobody likes that guy that only talks about himself and never asks anyone else questions. The same goes for Instagram! Social media is a place to be social, so make sure you're interacting with other users' content as well, not just posting your content and then going offline.
⭐ Top tip: Engage with other users' content for 10 minutes before and after you post to increase your post engagement!

4. USING THIRD-PARTY APPS
If you see an app that allows you to 'see who's blocked you' or 'get free followers', don't fall for it! These third-party apps are not approved by Instagram, making them potentially unsafe for your sensitive data (I'm talking logins being hacked) and an easy way to get your account banned by Instagram. Only ever use insights features within the Instagram and Facebook suite, or approved third-party software such as Later or Hootsuite.

5. REPURPOSING CONTENT FROM OTHER PLATFORMS
TikTok-ers, I'm looking at you 👀 In the world of social media, Instagram does not like to play with the other kids - 'other kids' being any platform that aren't owned by Facebook Inc. If you post content made on other platforms onto Instagram, such as TikToks, your engagement will end up being super low on those posts as Instagram will recognise the TikTok logo and say "no way!"

This might seem like a lot to take in, but have no fear! As long as you interact regularly and utilise Instagram's features to the best of your ability, your content should do fine. It's about not taking shortcuts or 'hacks' - no matter how tempting they are!

We're nearly halfway through October! It's around this time where your content might feel like it's starting to run a little dry, but no stress! Here's 3 content ideas that you can action throughout the rest of this month:⁠⁠

🌿 SHOW UP ON STORIES⁠⁠
This can be a challenge, but it's worth it! Help your followers put a face to a name by hopping on your stories to chat about your week.⁠⁠

🌿 TIMELAPSE REEL⁠⁠
If you work with a product or hands-on service, why not make a timelapse reel of you doing your work? This kind of reel is also great for those who aren't quite confident yet speaking on camera, because you can just choose some background music that pairs nicely with your video.⁠⁠

🌿 INTRODUCE YOURSELF
A lot of the time, us biz owners focus so much on our product or service content that we don't post much about ourselves! It's a great idea to post occasionally about yourself on your business account because it helps your followers relate to you.⁠⁠

BRAND PHOTOGRAPHY INFORMATION 📷⁠⁠

Getting to work with you in your space to create candid photography is one of my favourite things about my brand photography package. Unfortunately, I will not be able to book any home brand photography sessions until home visits are allowed again, as per the Victorian Government's restrictions.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Outlined in Phase C of the roadmap, home visits will hopefully resume as of Novermber 5th. Until then, I will be booking outdoor shoots in public spaces, so feel free to get in touch if this is something you would be interested in. If you are currently waiting on an indoor brand photography session, hopefully we will be able to work together soon! Let me know if you would like to get put on my waitlist and I will get in touch with you as soon as I can.⁠⁠

MY PURPOSE + PASSION ☀️⁠⁠

The last 18 months have been tough for everyone, especially small businesses and creatives. They had to shut their physical doors and focus solely on their online presence, and those that didn't already have an online presence had to make one. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Transitioning to an online mode of business doesn't come easily to everyone, social media can be hard to navigate. The world of posting times, hashtags, and professional-looking photography can be scary, and this is where I saw so many businesses struggle.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
As a uni student, I thought there wasn't much I could do. I tried to support my local businesses as much as I could by purchasing from them, but unfortunately we only have so much spending money, even less so during lockdown. It was at this point where I started to think of other ways I could support these businesses and realised that maybe I could use my social media knowledge and photography experience to do so.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
In early 2021 I began planning out my business on pieces of butcher paper, while starting to get into the world of branding photography with the help of my friend as my first client. From there I realised how much I loved working with artists and local business owners, seeing them flourish and feel confident in their online presence after receiving fresh photos or tips and tricks for Instagram.⁠⁠

Now, I can't wait to see where my business takes me in the future. I'm continuously meeting new people and growing my business offering, which is so exciting! Now working in brand photography, product photography, and Instagram strategy, I'm absolutely loving working with my clients and am VERY excited for 2022.⁠⁠

Did you hear the news? 👀 ⁠⁠

Instagram now recommends using 3-5 hashtags on your posts, yep, only 3-5! This is a huge decrease from the previous advice to utilise 10-20. But what does this mean for creators?⁠⁠

Well, it doesn't really mean much yet. The Instagram algorithm changes all the time, but it doesn't mean we have to freak out and change all of our posts. The best thing to do in this situation is focus on your content and make sure that first and foremost, you are focusing on giving your audience VALUE!⁠⁠
⁠⁠
If your content is valuable, it doesn't really matter how many hashtags you use, as they will only echo your content.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
I'll still be using the same content strategy because it works for me, but who knows, maybe I'll change it in the future if I notice a difference! There's one thing we know for sure, and that's that using hashtags do make a difference, regardless of the amount we use!⁠⁠
