This week’s episode of The Tone That Made Us Podcast is with quite possibly the single largest guitar influence in the Hardcore Music scene, Mr. John Porcelly. We had such a great chat with Porcell this is a two part episode. He talks about growing up in suburban NY, how a family member inspired him to play Guitar and how he got started. We discuss the various gear and tones he used on all of the Youth of Today, Judge, Shelter records and more. We touch on his love for Les Pauls and how his YOT Les Paul was not a Les Paul at all. His hatred and now new love affair with Fender guitars and his new projects, clothing line and so much more. This is a 2 part episode to check out part 2 next week! This week’s episode of The Tone That Made Us Podcast is with a long time friend and guitar pioneer in the scene. Adam and his bandmates in Split Lip took musicianship in Hardcore to a new level. As bands were catching up to them, they took a left turn, renamed the band Chamberlain and upped their game. Adam brough elements of Indie Rock and Country roots to later redefine and influence so many players in the scene. He talks about those developmental years, how the band always pushed the limits of what was accepted and the eventual disbanding and reunions. He also chats about his career as a musical director and film and tv scorer. Please share, rate and subscribe wherever you enjoy your podcasts! Spread the word!

This week’s episode of The Tone That Made Us Podcast is a long in depth chat with a Music Legend. Our first drummer on the show Ivan takes us on a journey from growing up in Harlem and being exposed to the New York version of the Wrecking Crew at an early age. Knowing Kurtis Blow as a child and eventually playing with him. Playing Live AID!!!! Playing on Broadway while attending college and how he used his reputation and networking skills to get epic gigs with Ashford and Simpson, Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan, J Lo and more. Producing award winning tracks for Vanessa Williams and how he transitioned his skills into a career of music education. This is truly one of the most interesting chats we have had. This Episode is an exceptionally important one for us. J Robbins (Government Issue, Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Channels, Solo) is a songwriting genius and great influence on many. His personal performing credits hold a close first place to his producing credits for bands like Clutch, Texas is the Reason, The Promise Ring and many more. J owns Magpie Cage Studios in Baltimore, MD. We get a chance to discuss his first love of Classical music and orchestration, being a introverted nerdy dude turned role model for the Post Hardcore scene and how his gear shaped the tones of the records we love.

This episode is with powerhouse guitarist Gavin Van Vlack. Over the past 4 decades he has influenced thousands of musicians by consistently reinventing his sound and approach in bands like Absolution, Burn, Die 116, Pry, Big Collapse and Cannonized. We discuss hitchhiking hundreds of miles as a youth to go to music stores to acquire gear, purchasing an epic guitar from Billy Gibbons and how he protected his gear over the years living in the Lower East Side Squats of Alphabet City in the 80’s. This week’s episode of the Tone That Made Us Podcast is part 1 of 2 with a great influence on both Dan and I. It is an incredibly nerdy gear saturated episode with one of our teen heroes Stephen Egerton. As the guitarist for Descendents and All, Stephen has solidified his place in punk rock history. But it goes much deeper. We touch on his humble beginnings as a solo acoustic player, how he got into producing, building the Blasting Room (literally), every guitar and amp he used in his years making music and if indeed his van leaked gasoline all over the streets of South River, NJ while producing Shades Apart at Trax East. This episode was a Bl’ast!
