Breaking news!

My Asunta 7 seedling got a brix score of 24.7%! This is the sweetest dragonfruit variety I have ever seen and tasted personally!

This A7 Seedling was extremely sweet like eating the hard candy outside of a red tootsie pop. It was sweeter than Sugar Dragon and taste really really good! There’s no floral or earthy after taste or smell. Very pleasant flavor from start to finish and will pull you right back for more! It’s truly like eating candy in fruit form.

This is the first time it produced fruit and the brix is already this high. I can only imaging it will only get a higher brix score once it fully matures into second and third year. This is a very promising Asunta 7 sibling and I can see this variety being used in hybrids to give it that extreme high brix score of 24.7%! I think it has potential to hit 27-29% brix in the future.

This variety is currently not for sale. No cuttings available. It’s still in evaluation phase and I want to make sure it has consistency before releasing to the public. Thank you for understanding!

Cosmic Charlie, Sugar Dragon, Hana, Frankie’s Red, CFA DK16, and Sour Apple Head.

Out of this batch the Sour Apple Head and CFA DK16 were the most unique and satisfying flavor out of the bunch. All these varieties have distinct unique flavors that really stands out. The evlolution of dragonfruit has gone so far and still people don’t know these amazing varieties exist.

The highlight of my pop up dragonfruit event was when Froi GMer gifted me these 2 new dragonfruit varieties that he grew from seedling that Edgar Valdivia gave him! I’m so use to always surprising people with my dragonfruit varieties so when he gave me these fruits I totally geeked out and start asking him so many questions! Thank you so much for coming to my event and giving me these 2 beautiful new yellow skin varieties! I can’t wait to taste them and do a review on these fruits!

These varieties are Asunta 5 siblings! These are Edgar Valdivia’s creation, which Froi GMer was lucky enough to have acquired some years back from his nephew Francisco.

Story time!

New hybrid A6-06; Asunta 6 Seedling 06.

This hybrid was created by using Asunta 5 x American Beauty by Edgar Valdivia and grown and grafted by me to expedite its growth and fruiting process.

This is the first TRUE green skin Asunta 6 sister that carries this trait. Out of the 10 Asunta 6 seedlings that I grafted this one was the first to show all green skin when fully ripe. It’s truly a beauty and I really love the aesthetics of this A6-06. It reminds me of a Watermelon Bomb Popsicle and is so attractive to the eyes!

I almost gave up on this seedling because it didn’t want to flower for 3 years. I just kept waiting and almost took it out because I felt like it was never going to flower. At the 3rd year it decided to surprise me and start to put out so many buds/flowers for this season! That was the first obstacle, the second was it was such a drama queen with accepting certain pollens! I tried my usual Sugar dragon, Pink Panther, Thai Gold, and Sour patch kids pollen that are all self fertile but it never took to set fruit and ended up in failed pollinations and aborting the flower. This was so frustrating because I waited 3 years for it to flower to end up still failing, so I thought I wasn’t going to get to try the fruits this season.

One night, I had a Pink Laverne flower blooming at the same time the A6-06 was blooming and I’ve already lost all hope that any pollen would be accepted by this drama queen and went ahead with pollinating it with Pink Laverne’s pollen anyways. 5 days later the flower wilted but the base of the fruit started to swell and become hard at touch! At this moment I was so happy doing a dance in my garden because it finally set fruit! All the wait and frustrating failed pollination attempts became all worth it when I saw it finally set fruit. Here we are today with this new Asunta 6 sister and so glad that I didn’t give up on this seedling.

It was totally worth it because this A6 sister tasted amazing! The flavors were rich in the usual berry flavor that was very sweet with nice contrast of tart/acid. Well balanced in overall taste with no floral or earthy tones or after taste. It was a first year fruit so I can only see it improve significantly from here. I’ll play with harvest time to see if it can improve but for now I’m just enjoying this fruit and reaping all the hard babying this A6-06 seedling.

New hybrid A5xA4 that I created using Asunta 5 as the mother and Asunta 4 as the father. The flavor has definitely improved and taste better than the parents. For a first fruit it showed a lot of potential. Very sweet, nice noticeable tart that contrast with each other making the fruit taste even better. Complex rich berry flavors and no floral smell or after taste. It leaves a very pleasant after taste.

I’m very happy with the outcome of this hybrid and will be evaluating it some more and play with harvest time to see if it can taste even better. I really love how you can see both traits of the parents within this hybrid. It still looks closely like its father but you can definitely see the mother’s skin tones within it.

The skin of this hybrid is also very interesting. It has a dusty color to it that makes it look prehistoric like from the dinosaur age. Pretty cool looking fruit but most importantly, it tasted amazing!

This variety was hybridized by Edgar Valdivia, continuing his legacy with the work of his Asunta lineage. The parents used in this creation were Asunta 4 and Valdivia Roja.

Thank you Thang Nguyen for the QOSF cuttings and thank you Daisie Nguyen for picking it up for me. So excited to add this to the hybrid program and start creating more self fertile and self pollinating varieties!

Meet my amazing friend and dragon fruit mentor, Edgar Valdivia. The last 2 years I’ve been helping Edgar develop his newest creation “Asunta 6”. It makes me so happy to always introduce every new Asunta 6 seedling or sister to Edgar Valdivia. His cheerful smile and genuine joy always brings so much happiness to my heart. Even with our big age gap difference, the same love for dragon fruit connects us so well and brings us together to share stories and the love of our passion towards dragon fruit. It’s truly an honor to be working with a legend and one of the most respected individual in the dragon fruit community.

Here’s Edgar Valdivia holding 2 of his creations that I personally help grow and develop in this picture.
These two varieties are Asunta 5 - Sunset Sherbet and Asunta 6 Nectar Sunrise. (He’s so happy to receive them look at his smile!)

I really cherish my relationship with Edgar and he’s the reason that pushes me to continue to grow, teach, educate, and most importantly have fun with growing dragon fruit!

My little advice to keep yourself happy in this hobby is don’t mind all the noise that others make. Grow and learn at your own pace. There’s always going to be someone that thinks they do it better than you and that’s okay, let them be them and you just do you! Enjoy the process, learn from your mistakes, and fill your heart with hapiness from growing dragon fruit. ❤️
