With Halloween behind us, I can finally emerge from my hiding hole and enjoy some non-spooky indie games again, from a beat em up featuring a Robin Hood-type character set in Colonial Taiwan, to a serene game about Unpacking moving boxes, to a Martian exploration game coming sometime in the future which reminds me of a cross between Valheim and Subnautica.

Let's Play KLANG 2 from Klang - Tinimations - A psychedelic rhythm-action game, blindly pursuing full immersion with dance music through high-speed combat. Axe throwing has been pretty trendy over the last 2 or three years, in the States at least. There are facilities where you and your mates can go and get sloshed while practicing your overhead axe-hurling technique. To be honest, I've never seen the appeal of it, I'd rather stick to my ninja stars. But when Jack picks up the sacred axe, imbued with power and capable of being wielded only by the strongest men, she unlocks some sweet new moves that make for a really fun evening with or without your mates. Tails of Iron from Odd Bug Studio and United Label has captivated me, not only with its wonderful, progressive world-building, but the story, music, combat, everything is just well-implemented and polished. In fact, as soon as I started thinking “Man, I wish the combat was a little more difficult”, I started getting my butt handed to me by some of the side-mission bosses. If you’ve joined any of my streams, you’ll know I’ve got a decent board game collection proudly displayed behind me, so when I learned of Dice Legacy being made by DESTINYbit and Ravenscourt, and advertised as a roguelike survival city builder with a board game-style twist, I jumped at the chance to review it. And it had me rolling dice faster than an addict at a craps table.

Golf is a complicated sport. It takes years of learning finely-tuned mechanics to make it even barely tolerable to play, but golf video games on the other hand are a little more forgiving and accessible to the masses. Golf Club: Wasteland from Demagog studio and Untold Tales ups the ante by not only delivering 35 holes of post-apocalyptic fun, but by making you question the democratic and capitalist lifestyles that fuel our nations. Souls-like games bring me a level of enjoyment that walks a fine line between ecstasy and madness. From the challenging, yet so satisfying boss fights, to the endless, repetitive traversal of menial platforming sections to the point where your mind engages auto-pilot until you reach a boss. Grime deeply resonates with these sentiments, but in my opinion falls a little bit short due to its lack of depth.

The Ascent from Neon Giant and Curve Digital is a diamond in the rough, a cyberpunk RPG done right! The bleak post-apocalyptic world is somehow brimming with life, akin to the worlds of Mass Effect. Lost at Sea from Studio Fizbin and Headup Games is a haunting walk down memory lane as you explore a serene island, but there are shadows, both literal and metaphorical, lying beneath the surface here as well.
