This is the JOY week of the advent season!

As the returned exiles gathered to hear the public reading and teaching of the word of God, the people were brought to tears as they heard the truth of His word proclaimed and felt conviction within their spirits. Both Nehemiah and Ezra encouraged the people to be filled with joy instead of mourning and to celebrate for joy of the Lord was their strength.

The holiday season can be filled with lots of hustle and bustle and can create tiring stress in the life of us all. This week, be filled with His joy and be strengthened by it. Let Him give you strength to endure and celebrate the coming King!

I pray that you will lean into Him and find strength in the joy of the Lord!

Feeling the cool, crisp air against my cheek gave me a bit of a chill as I sat out among the sheep. Gathered with the other shepherds, I hoped for a low-key, eventless evening.

The night sky was clear, and the glow of the stars offered a beautiful masterpiece of light. We settled into our usual night watch routine and expected nothing out of the ordinary.

Then suddenly, a glorious vision erupted out of the darkness. Our wondering eyes strained to behold the magnificent and radiant sight. A chorus of angels shimmered before us.

In our awestruck stupor, we fell face down. One of the divine creatures boldly proclaimed into the silent night:

“Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

Dumbfounded by the proclamation, we stood transfixed, frozen in reverent fear. What was this majestic being saying? Was the news really true? Had the Messiah come?

Just as our feeble minds began processing the heralded message, the choir of angels burst into song with a wonderful offering of joyful worship!

Wow! We couldn’t believe the witness of our eyes or the testimony of our ears. As the jubilant song ceased, we gathered ourselves and moved as a unit. We felt a necessary compulsion move us. Somehow, we knew our sheep would be fine. We abandoned our post and journeyed into town. Searching throughout the little town of Bethlehem, we finally found the little babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger, sleeping peacefully.

The jubilant joy of our hearts burst from our lips as we carried on the majestic message throughout the region. The wonderful witness of the angelic heralds had proven true, and we faithfully joined the chorus as we offered worship to Him!

As dawn began to break, we finally returned to our flock. What had started as an ordinary evening marvelously transformed into an extraordinary, history changing event! Christ had come to save the world! This truly was a message of good news and great joy!

In a world wracked with havoc and chaos, it's so easy to let your thoughts descend into darkness and despair. But Christ came to give us peace. In John 16, He said that, yes, in this world we would have trouble. But we are to take heart, for He has overcome the world!

As the Prince of Peace, He has the power and authority to reign over the chaos of your mind and bring about a supernatural peace that surpasses all understanding.

This Christmas, choose to let the peace of Christ guard your heart and mind, and as the prophet says, He will keep you in perfect peace when your mind is stayed on Him and trusts in Him.

Claim the promise given in this scripture today - choose the Prince of Peace as your King, focus your mind on Him, and then His perfect peace will reign in your heart and mind!

Hope. An anchor for the soul.

As a howling wind trumpeted in my ear, my heart sank in terror. The blasting sound silenced any hope of escape. I clung tightly to the mast. The stinging slap of water burned my skin. Each evil spray of water shattered my countenance and kept a grimace splattered on my face. The wicked rocking of the boat made it impossible to take even one step away from my secure position. I was stuck. Frozen. My heart longed to break free, but all seemed hopeless. I was a captive of the storm. Its evil and menacing power enslaved me. I was a prisoner of the storm, encapsulated by fear, dread, doubt, and sin.

Then, a whisper broke through the thundering storm. “You are Mine.”
What? Who said that? How could I even hear that? No sound could break through this deafening wind. Surely, it’s just my own crazy echoing inside.

“Seek Me.”

What? There it was again. “Who said that?”

“I have a plan.”

“What do you mean, ‘You have a plan?’”

“For you. Plans for welfare. Not evil. “

“Well, I don’t feel like I am faring well now. This storm has stripped me of all hope. My heart is sinking to the depths of the sea, and I am drowning in despair. No plan can work. It’s hopeless. The future looks bleak. You can’t help me.”

“My plan is for good, not for evil. It will give you hope and future. “

“I’m not sure. Tell me what to do.”

“Call upon Me. Come. Pray. I hear you.”

“Hear me? That’s impossible. The storm is too loud.”

“Seek Me.”

“How? I can’t even move?”

“With your whole heart.”

“My heart is like lead. It can’t move. This storm has won. I am lost at sea. How can I seek you when I can’t be found?”

“Seek Me and you will find Me.”

“Ok. What if I find you? What then?”

“I will restore you and bring you back.”

Just as waves of fear threatened certain death, I let go. Every fiber of my fear wracked body wanted to stay right there clinging to the mast in my own strength, but the whispering voice couldn’t be silenced in my soul. Its echo drew me away from that spot. I released my grip and called upon Him. The eyes of my heart turned up seeking refuge from the storm, and suddenly I was transported away from the howling wind and biting slaps of water.

No longer a slave of the ravaging storm, I stood in silence. Before me I beheld something truly mysterious. A baby wrapped in swaddling clothes sleeping peacefully in a manger.

Just looking at Him silenced the chaos of my mind. A peace washed over me. I felt enveloped by a complete love, and in my heart, hope began to rise. As it rose, I felt my soul anchored right there in awe and worship. I could see the plan for a bright future as a new day dawned. Life abundant lay before me.

A song burst forth from my lips. A song of joy. A song of adoration. A song of worship. I knew instantly that now, in the life of this baby, all is well. Hope awakened from its deep slumber. The storm ceased as I stood anchored to the hope of a bright future that lay before me.

Christ Comes Bringing New Life
At the fall, man became separated from God. In our separation from God, we became slaves to sin and death. God wanted more for us. He wanted to rescue us from sin and death and offer us new life!

God knew that He was the only one who had the power to defeat death once and for all. He loved the world so much, that He sent His one and only Son to come and die for all of our sins.

Christ did it! He came to earth as an innocent baby - fully God and fully man. He lived a perfect life, fulfilling the law in every way. Then, He offered Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for all sin, once and for all.

Now He sits at the right hand of the Father, interceding for humanity. All of this became possible because He humbled Himself and came as a baby born in a manger.

This Christmas take a fresh look at the Christmas story. Because Christ came and died, we now have the hope of new life! We are dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus! Wow! That’s amazing news!

Spend this advent season steeping in the story of Jesus’s birth. Let the Christmas story unfold day by day, as you and your family gather to hear the greatest story ever told! Christ has come and now we have life!

Hope of Salvation

What was hoped for and prophesied in Genesis and Isaiah has finally arrived! Immanuel – God with us – born of a virgin is here!

As the angel shares with Mary God’s plan for her and for her unborn child, you can sense that something truly miraculous is about to take place. The long-awaited Messiah is here. The child born of a virgin will soon arrive. Mary’s willingness to believe, submit, and obey is truly outstanding. What seemed impossible is now becoming possible for nothing is impossible with God! The hope offered in the angel’s proclamation cannot be missed!

The Son of the Most High is finally coming to reign forever on David’s throne. He is the Son of God who will bring salvation to all! As the Savior, He will bridge the gap between man and God. In this precious baby, the promise of Immanuel is fulfilled – God will truly live with His people through the person of Jesus!

This Christmas season, take time to reflect on the excitement of the coming King as announced to Mary by the angel Gabriel. As the angel states, He will be known as the Son of the Most High, the Son of God. He is to be called, Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. Think about His eternal reign and His offer of salvation to all. He’s coming to be God with us. Let this thought inject hope into your life. Cling to the miraculous and impossible as you rejoice at the news of the coming child.

Hope of the Prophecy

The book of Isaiah was written during a time of trouble for God’s people. Soon God would execute judgement of His people for their sin as He sent them into exile. Yet, in the midst of this difficult and tumultuous time in the story of God’s people, He shared prophecies foretelling the coming Messiah, the One who would save His people from their sin.

In Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6-7, God promised to bring forth a child, a son born of a virgin, to come and be Immanuel, God with us. When this child comes, He will reign forever as King, He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace, and He will rule in justice and righteousness. This is truly something to hope for!

In our lives, we sometimes experience tumultuous and difficult seasons. We long to cling to some kind of hope. Because of Christ, we have that kind of hope – a hope we can cling to and stand firm and secure.

He was and is the fulfillment of the promises made in Isaiah. He was born of a virgin. He was the child given, not only to the people of Israel, but to all humanity. He is the promised seed to reign as King. Because of the righteous judgement He brings, there will be peace for all of humanity and all of creation.

This Christmas season, cling to the hope offered in Christ. Believe that He is your Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.
There is a day coming when He will come back to reign forever. Until then, let Him reign as the King of your heart and stand firm and steadfast in the hope you have placed in Him.

Hope for All Nations

As we focus on the hope that we have in Christ, it’s important to look at God’s promise to bless the nations through Abraham. When God called Abraham to leave his home and go to the land that He would show him, God was continuing His plan to rescue humanity from the grip of sin and death and restore them to Himself. He chose to do this through one man, Abraham. Through Abraham’s descendants, God would bring about the promised seed of Genesis 3:15.

God promised Abraham an individual blessing, a generational blessing, and an eternal blessing. All of it hinged on God’s faithfulness and Abraham’s faith and obedience to God’s call.

Keep in mind there was no time frame associated with the fulfillment of this promise. Abraham was just supposed to take it on faith. Being a childless man, he had to faithfully place his hope in God’s promise of great blessing.

For us, we find hope in knowing that God had a plan from the beginning to bless all nations; and that hope hinges on God’s faithfulness to His promise and our obedient belief in Him.

Just as God credited Abraham’s faith to him as righteousness, He credits to us our faith as righteousness. It is because of Christ that we have hope in the fulfillment of His promise to us.

This Christmas season, when we reflect on Christ, the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham to bless all nations, let’s find hope in knowing that we are blessed now and forever because of our faith in Jesus.

Hope Promised

Hope is the confident expectation of the fulfillment of something desired. It casts an eye to the future. Christmas brings that hope fully present year after year. It is as if in the Christmas season the fulfillment feels more real than at any other time.

This week we will focus on the hope that is found in Christ – a confident expectation that God will fulfill His promises.

Once upon a time man lived in the garden of Eden with God. There was no separation. There was a peaceful rest, a sweet communion, and fellowship between God and man. Then, through the sin of man, the sweet fellowship was broken, and man was expelled from the garden. At the moment of the fall, it seemed as if all hope was lost, and the renewal of fellowship between God and man would never be restored. Yet, at what seemed like the darkest moment, God offered a glimmer of hope. When it appeared as if the crafty snake had won and sin and death had entered the world, God promised victory through the coming of One, from the seed of woman, who would defeat Satan, defeat death, and defeat sin. He would restore what was lost, sweet communion and fellowship between God and man. The promised seed is Christ Himself.

Even at the very beginning, God’s plan was always to bring restoration, and in the darkness and sadness of this moment, He gave hope, a hope for a brighter tomorrow, a hope for Eden restored.

This Christmas season let’s cling to the hope found in the coming of Christ.

Remember that this isn’t a flimsy hope – NO! It is a confident expectation that Christ is coming, and through Him, Satan, sin, and death are defeated. In Him we have victory!

Let this confident hope in Christ bring you strength and courage in this Christmas season.

Today, I am thankful for falling leaves as they cascade down in droves to blanket the waiting ground. As I look out the window, I spy the downpour of leaves as they gently float down and rest upon the quickly growing leaf coverlet concealing my grassless yard. Living in North Carolina for nearly two decades has afforded me the opportunity to witness the yearly leaf showers of fall. I am amazed year after year at the bountiful harvest of color each autumn brings to the world. As God designed deciduous trees to do, the 17 or so trees in my yard, and the countless trees in my neighborhood continue the same cycle year after year of budding, growing, shedding of leaves. Fall is my favorite time. Each year my heart sings praise to Him as I am in awe of the diversity of colors and the magnitude of beauty painted by the Lord each fall. Today, as I peek outside, I observe the repeated cycle. My heart finds peace in the scene displayed outside. The rays of the sun illuminate the flowing and floating of the thousands of leaves that sail down. I feel the calmness and rest as each leaf journeys down. There’s something spiritual about seeing the world slowly heading to its winter rest. Throughout the spring and summer, these leaves faithfully work to absorb the rays of the sun to transform its energy to feed and nourish the tree; and now their work is done. They continue to cycle of life, ceasing their life nourishing duties, and slowly alter their color and eventually break free from the bonds of the tree to descend into slumber. It’s like the Lord is inviting the entire world to enter a solemn rest for the winter season only to reemerge with new life at the beginning of spring.

With us it is the same. We toil and labor day after day on all that God has called us to do. We bask in the light of the Son, absorbing the life-giving energy He shines into us, and we generate and produce for His glory. Then, each week, He invites us to join Him in rest. Rest from the striving and struggling. He whispers into our hearts that it is time to shed the struggles of the week and gently lay down in slumber. Each week, He gives us an opportunity to kneel before Him and find solemn rest from all our labor only to reemerge with new life at the beginning of a new week.

Yes, today, I am thankful for the falling leaves for they remind me that He’s calling me to rest from the toiling of my labors, rest in Him, and reemerge to new life tomorrow all for His glory!

Will you find rest in Him?

Today, I am thankful for the quiet of the morning. Sitting alone in my living room in the darkness of early morning, I soak in each silent moment. Living in a house full of teenagers, my days are filled with comings and goings. I move from schooling to cleaning to working to cooking and more. Each day presents me with active, busy life. I love it. I wouldn’t have it any other way, but there is something special about these precious minutes of quiet aloneness where the night still reigns in the fullness of its darkness just before the day awakens from its nightly slumber and my busy day unwraps that I find just a moment of restful peace.

It's in these sweet seconds where my heart hears the soft whispers of my Lord speak to me. He gently invites me to listen and receive His wooing words of love. He has created this day for me and created me for this day. There is nothing in this day that He has not seen, not prepared, not ordained. He knows what lies before me and He knows who lives inside me. Today is His, and in that I will rejoice! Yes, Lord Jesus. I hear. I know. I answer. Today, I will walk with You.

Then, the sounds of day dawn. The quiet moments of morning have ceased. I am ready! To Him be all glory!

Today, I am thankful for the quiet of the morning.

This is the day the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

09/11/2022

Today, I am thankful for Bible study. I love studying the word of God. It feeds my soul like nothing else. There once was a season when I only snacked on God’s word. As a classroom teacher and graduate student, my plate was pretty full. Grabbing God’s word in nibbles and bites became my normal. Sunday mornings only included worship service; Bible class had become a thing of the past. I struggled and strained spiritually. I slowly dried out and my faith faltered to bitter dryness.

A bitter root began to dig deep into the ground. Each stretching limb desperately searched for water, but found none. With a hardening heart and stoning soul, I gradually grew more and more sad, angry, depressed, anxious, and completely unsatisfied in my life. I needed more.

In my want, I received an opportunity to join a Bible study. In my state of general unhappiness and misery, I apathetically declined the invitation. My husband, seeing my dilapidated condition, urged me to join. I debated and pushed back for a while, but eventually decided to attend the Bible study.

Begrudgingly I participated at first. I completed my weekly homework mainly out of pride in the beginning. But slowly something began to unfold within me. As I sat feeding on God’s word week after week, the unmet hunger and thirst found fulfillment. The searched for nutrients had been found.

What are you hungry for?

Taste and see that the Lord is good!

Today, I am thankful for good books. I am thankful for books that speak to the soul and nourish deep parts of me that I didn’t even know were hungry. I am thankful for books that inspire me and spur me on to new and bold endeavors. I am thankful for books that bring tears to my eyes as the words of the page voice the cries of my heart that before lacked the words to speak their message. I am thankful for books that paint portraits of unseen, yet familiar places, places that only dreams whisper. I am thankful for books that birth moments of jubilant, joyous laughter as if my soul heard the joke it had told itself long ago. I am thankful for books that speak the deep truths once known, long ago concealed and forgotten, and now reemerging as they spill light into the current darkness. I am thankful for books that invite my spirit to worship and praise its Maker with love songs to the One who is so worthy of my worship. I am thankful for books that send me to my knees to pray for loved ones known and unknown. I am thankful for books that patiently wait year after year upon my shelf, concealing treasures yet unearthed, that call me to open and discover, yet remain unmined many days, whose calls are silenced by the busyness of the season; and then one day, I answer the call to harvest their jewels and deposit their gems of wisdom deep into my heart. I am thankful for old books that lie hidden and unseen in used bookstores waiting for me to find. I am thankful for new books that share the stories of yesterday’s and today’s heroes. I am thankful for the books that are yet unwritten and that are quietly forming in the hearts of authors still unknown. I am thankful for the Book whose words are living and active and cut deep into my soul separating me from the sin that eats away at my soul and feeds words of new life and eternity into me.
Today, I am thankful for good books.
