Hi everyone, tonight I met a sweet little girl who needs our help.
Meet Sapphire, a sweet and brave one-year-old girl born on May 23, 2023. From the moment she entered the world, Sapphire has been facing the challenges of Spina Bifida Myelomeningocele, Chiari malformation, and hydrocephalus. Just an hour after her birth, she was airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where she spent several weeks in the NICU undergoing multiple tests. A proud NICU graduate, Sapphire has shown incredible strength in her young life.
For her first year, Sapphire made biweekly trips to Phoenix for tests and physical therapy through AZEIP and Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH). At 10 months, she began crawling, and by 12 months, she was walking. However, as she approached 13months, she started experiencing severe pain and struggled to walk as much as before.
On November 12, 2024, Sapphire will undergo a critical surgery at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Doctors discovered her spinal cord is dangerously tight, putting her at risk of paralysis from the chest down. To prevent this, she will have surgery to release her spinal cord, during which two bones in her back will be broken and removed, with a tissue replacement and skin graft to protect her spine. The recovery will be long and difficult, potentially lasting from one week to several months. Throughout this ordeal, Sapphire’s mother, resigned from her job at Little Caesars to care for her daughter, will be by her side.
As we approach Spina Bifida Awareness Day on October 25, 2024, we ask for your support in helping Sapphire and her family during this challenging time. Donations will go directly toward gas, food, lodging, and other essentials needed while her mother stays with her through surgery and rehabilitation.
