In Mikladalur Harbor on Kalsoy, part of the Faroe Islands in Denmark, stands a striking 9 ft-tall statue made of bronze and stainless steel, depicting the mythical Kópakonan (The Seal Wife). Unveiled in August 2014, this sculpture was crafted by artist Hans Pauli Olsen and serves as a tribute to the selkie legends prevalent in this region. These tales, particularly two famous myths about the Seal Wife, are deeply rooted in Faroese folklore. The legend describes selkies as humans who chose the sea over life, transforming into seals. According to myth, once every year on Twelfth Night, they could shed their seal skins, assume human form, and revel in earthly pleasures for a short time.

A 9-year-old Tim Burton, wearing a skeleton costume his mother made him for Halloween in 1967. It was this costume that would later inspire the character, Jack Skellington, in Tim Burton’s stop-motion animation production of the 1993 film, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The olive tree of Vouves, on Crete. This tree, which has a trunk 15 feet in diameter, is at least 2,000 years old, and likely 2,900 years old, based on the graveyard found nearby. This tree likely lived through the writing of the Iliad, the golden age of Athens, the rise of the Roman Empire, and the birth of Christ – and then lived for 2,000 years after that. It still produces olives, as well!

Here's an interesting Halloween question: How did the Victorian-style house become the default Haunted House? The answer is quite fascinating. Victorian architecture is named Queen Victoria of England. She reigned from 1837 to 1901. This style of architecture is characterized by its steep roof lines, bright colors, and rounded turrets and towers. By the 1900s, this style was criticized by many as, "wooden monstrosities" and examples of "Ostentatious and arrogant ugliness." World War 1 only increased this distaste of European style as they sought to forget any traces of a corrupt past. Artists, photographers, and painters began to use these homes as metaphors for fear and terror. Films like "Psycho" and books like "Haunting on Hill House" solidified the idea that Victorian houses were spooky places to be avoided.

THIS IS CONRAD HEYER ... he is the earliest born person in the U.S. to ever be photographed. He was born in 1749, but sat for this pic in 1852 at the age of 103. While you’ve probably never seen this pic, it’s a good bet you’ve seen the famous painting that includes him. At age 27 in 1776, Conrad was a Revolutionary soldier who was in the boat with General George Washington when he crossed the Delaware River.

′′ Few people know that Popeye's character (Arm wrestle) really existed. His real name was Frank ′′ Rocky ′′ Fiegel, born in Poland in 1868. he emigrated with his family to America where in 1887 he joined the Navy.
When he was with children he held the pipe with the corner of his mouth and told them the antics of his youth, often boasting of his physical strength and loudly claiming that spinach is the food that makes him invincible.
Popeye's character creator Elzie Crisler Segar was born in Chester and was one of the children who had the privilege of hearing ′′ live ′′ the stories of the former sailor."

In Renaissance time, in Italy , the most surprising beauty trend was the hair removal from their foreheads. This was sometimes achieved by shaving the hairline but beauty manuals tell us a more common technique was to apply an alkaline hair removal paste.

Such of poultice could be made of pig fat, juniper berries, mustard but the most eye popping ingredient was cat faeces blended with vinegar.

In fairness, modern beauty products still include weird stuff like snail 🐌 slime but I'm not sure if L' oréal could get way with smearing cat p**p on celebs telling us to do the same because " you're worth it "

Brothel Candles; were used extensively in European brothels between 1880-1905 CE. They were also popular in the Western United States during Gold Rush years. Concept was simple, you paid your price of admission, so to speak, and then you and your rent-a-date would head to 'Room of Requirement'.

Lady of the Night would light the wick and you’d get busy. A brothel candle burned for approximately seven minutes. When the candle went out, you were done. Even if you weren’t, technically, done. Some ladies would trim the candles down, so they’d burn for even less time. To which I say, good on ya, gals.

Fact Slap 👋 on September 11th, 2001 the actor Steve Buscemi returned to his old fire house in Manhattan's Little Italy, Engine 55. Put on a spare uniform and went to work.

Buscemi trained as a fire fighter in 1980 and worked in the FNDY until left to pursue acting in 1984.

He worked for several days in the rubble of the towers, working 12 hour shifts and refused interviews with the press. He has only now began to open up about happened that day and that he is suffering with a form of PTSD from what he saw in the wreckage. Prior to this all he ever said on the matter was that he and his then wife provided pizza, drinks and support to the other crew’s families.

In 2014 he was appointed an Honorary Battalion Chief of the FDNY.🥰

Exploring Blue Spirulina: A Vibrant Natural

What Is Blue Spirulina?
Blue spirulina is a natural extract derived from certain species of blue-green algae, particularly Arthrospira platensis. It’s renowned for its vibrant blue color, making it a popular ingredient in the food and beverage industry, as well as in health and wellness products.
Blue spirulina contains a powerful antioxidant pigment called phycocyanin, which is responsible for its distinct blue hue. It offers numerous potential health benefits, such as anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant support and immune system enhancement.

Often used as a natural food coloring agent in smoothies, desserts, beverages and various culinary creations, blue spirulina adds an attractive blue or turquoise color to dishes, while also boosting health. It’s a nutrient-dense substance, containing essential vitamins, such as vitamin B12; minerals, including iron, calcium and magnesium; protein; and other beneficial compounds that contribute to overall nutritional support.

While blue spirulina and green spirulina are often confused, they are derived from different species of algae and possess distinct characteristics.

Here are the key differences between the two:

Source: Blue spirulina is derived from specific species of blue-green algae, particularly Arthrospira platensis. Green spirulina, on the other hand, typically refers to the regular spirulina powder obtained from the species Arthrospira platensis or Arthrospira maxima, which has a greenish color.
Pigment and Color: The primary difference between blue spirulina and green spirulina is their pigment composition. Blue spirulina derives its intense blue color from the phycocyanin pigment, which is a blue pigment with antioxidant properties. Green spirulina gets its green color from a combination of chlorophyll (green pigment) and other pigments.
Nutrient Content: Both blue spirulina and green spirulina are nutrient-dense and offer various vitamins, minerals and protein. Their nutrient content, such as the protein and vitamin B12 content, can be similar as they come from similar algae species, but the exact nutrient composition varies depending on the growing conditions, processing methods and brands.
Usage and Applications: Blue spirulina is primarily used as a natural food coloring agent to add a vibrant blue or turquoise hue to foods and beverages. Green spirulina, on the other hand, is commonly used as a dietary supplement due to its rich nutrient profile. It’s often available in the form of powder or capsules and typically consumed for its potential health benefits.
Here are a few of the most common types of seaweeds and algae that are used as foods and/or supplements:
