When art historian Rashieda Witter () set out to honor D.C.’s rich Black cultural history as the youngest and only Black curatorial assistant at the National Gallery of Art, “A Great Day in Chocolate City” emerged as her powerful vision, weaving the present and past into an intergenerational image.

“I knew I wanted to tell a story that incorporated the present moment and our past, and the only way that I felt like I would do it justice was to create an image as broad and magnificent and intergenerational as A Great Day in Chocolate City has become.”

For the , we visited Baltimore-based artist David Ayala () in their Station North Arts District studio to explore the inspirations and techniques behind their strikingly layered work. Through textured glitter surfaces and fluid nail polish compositions, Ayala reimagines themes of queerness, interrogates American hegemony, and transmutes Christian iconography, crafting art that is both deeply personal and profoundly resonant.

In this conversation with NUNAR Editor-in-Chief , Ayala reflects on their journey from Iowa to Baltimore and how their practice continues to challenge conventions and spark dialogue in the contemporary art world.

The Chocolate City contemporary arts scene marks its presence in “A Great Day in Chocolate City”, where 166 Black artists—from luminary elders to rising art stars—gathered to celebrate the power of community, creativity, and Black cultural sovereignty.

The photo represents a wide array of visual disciplines, including traditional fine arts, contemporary and modern art forms, design and applied arts, media arts, craft and decorative arts, street and public art, emerging and experimental forms, folk and cultural arts, historical and archival visual arts, as well as arts education and research.

There were no public calls to publicize the production. Instead, knowledge of the photo relied on word-of-mouth and these simple instructions from curator Rashieda Witter: “Share the invitation with other artists whose work you believe in. They must be of African ancestry and descent.”

Do you recognize any of these remarkable artists? Celebrate them in the comments below! 🌟

A century after the Black Renaissance gave rise to Black Broadway and the flourishing of jazz and the arts in D.C., local artists and natives now stand as guardians of the city’s cultural identity, pushing back against gentrification, narrow perspectives of the city, and the encroachment of federal politics.

In our first of two cover stories for the Vanguard Issue, we celebrate an intergenerational vanguard of 166 Washingtonian artists and cultural leaders featured in Beverly Price’s “A Great Day in Chocolate City”. This historic panoramic photograph, curated by art historian and former National Gallery of Art assistant curator Rashieda Witter (), pays tribute to the iconic “Great Days” of Harlem, Hip-Hop, Hollywood, and Go-Go from decades past.

3x Emmy-nominated cultural analyst and writer BeMo Brown () delves into the making of this monumental photo with Price and Witter, exploring the importance of Black cultural preservation, archival efforts, and the vibrancy of D.C.’s contemporary arts scene.

To everyone in D.C. and the DMV feeling the weight of this election: our strength lies in unity. Join a political organization to turn grief into action. Here’s a non-comprehensive guide to grassroots organizations in the DMV and nationwide.

Together, we can still build the change we wish to see. Hold one another, believe in yourself, and get active 🫶🏾🫂

NUNAR was on the scene of the 8th annual earlier this month, seeing some of our favorite artists, and discovering more. Held at Robert C. Marshall Park, the former grounds of the historic Royal Theater, and in partnership with the Black Arts District (), the festival sought to reactivate the outdoor space situated off Pennsylvania Avenue.

Aiming to aid the district’s community revitalization and anti-displacement mandate, the event was a multi-experience extravaganza suitable for all ages, showcasing live musical performances, a petting zoo, an art gallery, engaging activities, and a variety of local vendors.

Founded by Emmy Award-winning composer and musician John Tyler (), Love Groove is an outgrowth of the vibrant DIY underground music and arts scene. Thanks to growing community and sponsor support, the festival has expanded from intimate indoor venues like Motorhouse to accomplishing its second large-scale outdoor stage, providing a major platform for young artists from the DMV and beyond.

The musical lineup included a spectrum of genres and acts including Makinde (.la), Elyscia (), Moore (), AngelCONCEPCION (), Citywide Goldstarz Marching Band, , Troy Story (), nightlife (), BSA Jazz Ensemble, , Adwoa (), , , Briley Harris (), , T. Ali, , , as well as DJ Cash Liss (), DJ Huxtable (), and DJ Nico (). The event was hosted by singer Amber August ().

Our photographer Kaylin Webster was on the grounds capturing every moment.

An eclectic crowd gathered at Homme DC for EXPO DMV’s third annual one-night exhibition, EXPO 2024, on September 1st. Homme DC, a magnet for D.C.’s avant-garde art world, hosted Aton Ibe Crawley’s solo exhibition in August and Dieglo’s collection in March.

This year’s show explored the theme of online personas and aesthetics, presenting a multidisciplinary collection from BIPOC, femme, and LGBTQIA+ artists across the DMV. The exhibition featured Rikk (), Phylicia Scott (), Simone Perez-Garcia (), Jordan “HoneyDipp” Dominique (), and Simone Ruth ().

Though Homme DC’s L Street gallery may not boast an expansive space or the luxury of air conditioning, its raw, no-frills environment has become a cherished venue for avant-garde and underground art.

The event saw appearances from NUNAR editor-in-chief Damon J. Barnes and co-owner Daloren, alongside well-regarded artists and tastemakers like .midas, , , , , , and . Co-curated by National Gallery of Art assistant curator and art historian Rashieda Witter (), renowned multidisciplinary artist-activist Trap Bob (), and feminist art star , the night was a highlight for D.C.’s art scene.

Sponsored by and her firm Dead Dirt (), Kelcie Glass (), and , which provided bite-size Indian cuisine, the event also featured speeches and a champagne toast by Expo DMV founders Coco Paylor () and .
