The "3'Oclock Prayer"
The significance of 3 p.m. in Catholic devotion is as follows:
1. The Hour of Jesus' Death: According to the Gospels, Jesus was crucified and died on the cross at around 3 p.m. This moment is considered the climax of His redemptive sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. Therefore, 3 p.m. is seen as a moment to reflect on and commemorate this pivotal event in Christian salvation history.
2. Divine Mercy Devotion: The devotion to the Divine Mercy, as revealed to Saint Faustina Kowalska in the early 20th century, encourages Catholics to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3 p.m. It is believed that Jesus promised special graces and mercy to those who pray the Chaplet at this hour.
3. Prayer for the Living and the Dead: Catholics also pray at 3 p.m. to intercede for the living and the deceased. It is seen as a time to offer prayers for those in need, especially for the souls in purgatory.
4. The Great Hour of Mercy: Some Catholics view 3 p.m. as a powerful time for personal reflection, repentance, and seeking God's mercy. It's a moment to pause during the day and turn one's thoughts toward God's forgiveness and love.
