Stop dreading Mondays! Do something that makes you happy. It can be easy to get stuck in being complacent with where you are and “grinding” through it for the next paycheck or for some date to pass. It doesn’t have to be that way. You can take action now and make those steps towards a better life.

You can do this! Why be unhappy when new opportunities are right outside the door.

I don’t think Gary Vaynerchuk’s words could be any more true. The number of people I have helped mentor to get them new jobs this year came down to two things: hard work and numbers. Finding a new job is a numbers game, listen to any of the past episodes, every guest has said that exact statement. Might not be 7,000 applications for software engineering but it’s a lot more than 3. If you put in the work great things will come, I promise. https://www.instagram.com/tv/CItxBK1gBgg/?igshid=1p4qlld72ggxq

In this episode I interview Wyatt Weisensel on how he went from being an english teacher in Japan to becoming a software engineer. Wyatt goes in-depth about what his 5 months of unemployment and job searching looked like during covid. He talks about how to stay relevant, the importance of side projects, how to take control of the interview, understanding your value, and the importance of mentorship. We go on to talk about how interviewing in the midwest is different and the same from big tech companies, FANG. Making a decision or evaluating offers can be difficult, so Wyatt and I talk about why it's important to look at more than just salary when choosing an offer.

New episode of the podcast is out!!!

In this episode, I interview Neil CarlinSchauer, a software engineer. He talks about how he went from being a super senior failing classes to becoming a full stack software engineer who is now leading projects and mentoring junior engineers. Seeking and creating opportunities was a recurring theme in Neil’s career. Neil goes in depth on how he “leveled up” during college with his first internship and by surrounding himself with like minded individuals. To wrap up the interview I asked him what are four tips for software engineering candidates, he replied with five:

1. Research the company you’re applying for
2. Be up to date on your technical skills (fundamentals)
3. Practice interviewing
4. Solid communication
5. Don’t be a dick

The number one thing that led to his success was “swallowing [his] pride”. talks about how he had to accept the fact that he was a new engineer and wasn’t different from the other candidates. He focused his attention on “increasing potential”. Listen to episode 2 to find out how

#1 way to success is by asking questions. Asking questions allows you to learn new things faster and progress in your career at a faster pace. When you start a new job don’t be afraid to ask dumb questions, everyone was in your shoes at one point in time. Another thing to remember is to give something your best shot and put in the effort before giving up and asking someone for help but don’t struggle too long; find a happy medium.

Being self aware allows you to be vulnerable and gives you an understanding of where you are currently at. This provides you the next steps you need to take in achieving your dreams. In episode 2 talks about taking the chip off his shoulder and focusing on his weaknesses in order to get a new job.

There’s no reason not to start your side project. GitHub is now offering free unlimited repositories (and cheaper plans for teams)! You no longer have to worry about paying a monthly subscription in order to keep your app idea a secret. Starting a side project is a great way to make you stand out to your future employer and will separate you from the other candidates. https://github.blog/changelog/2020-04-14-private-repositories-with-unlimited-collaborators-available-to-all-github-accounts-and-changes-to-github-paid-plans/

Landing your dream job doesn’t come without putting in the work. If you are a student that means going beyond the curriculum to learn other tech and apply the skills you learned in class to side projects. If you are just starting your career trying to land your first full time gig that means applying to a bunch of places and building a portfolio website. told me he applied to over 200 places and that it’s a “numbers game”. In the second episode we talk about increasing the number of “callbacks” by leveraging the “I’m open to hearing about new job opportunities” feature on LinkedIn and how to be more discoverable on the internet.

Having the right building blocks is key. Being able to identify which library or design pattern to solve a specific problem makes a world of difference. Take any opportunity you have to learn new techniques and technologies. This will allow you to choose the right solution for the problem, and not over engineer it.

Do you ever feel like you are falling? No matter what you try you get the same result...falling and can’t do anything about it...just waiting to hit the ground so you can move on to the next thing. I think this analogy fits well with job searching. For example you’re stuck at a job you hate and you keep apply and interviewing for other positions but you aren’t getting any offers or next rounds interviews, despite the amount of studying you put in. In order to stop “falling” you need to take a step back and evaluate yourself and the feedback you have received from past interviews. Am I failing first round interviews with managers that ask just team fit and behavioral questions? Am I not making it past technical phone interviews? Am I studying the right thing and the right time in the interview process? These are just a few questions you should ask yourself and then change how you prepare, execute, and follow up interviews.
