As a teenager/young adult, my idols were middle-aged drug addicts 😅
The media, books, films, documentaries, and song lyrics, had romanticised my favourite bands' most destructive characteristics. I felt like I or anyone else who did not follow in their free-spirited 'f*ck life, you only live once' footsteps were frauds.
Although these figures were talented, I was focusing on the negative qualities they possessed. I concluded that my songwriting would not be worthy if I did not emulate their drug-taking and self-sabotaging behaviour. That behaviour did not bring them their success, and this is the REAL secret everyone overlooks. I overlooked it.
Back then, I decided to 'Stick it to the man as they did in the '70s, only now I would reject social media to be 'the REAL deal', aka underground even though those who I looked up ended up going mainstream anyway.
Joining social media would of really 'Stuck it to the man'. In hindsight, we can all agree that social media has removed much of the power away from those who gatekeep many industries. Being innovative and trying new technology/ideas is one of the first things you should do if you are setting out to achieve your goal.
Would my life of been different had I had the silent mentors I know have?
