Every woman knows how hard it is to lose body fat on the butt, thighs and belly. Sometimes it feels like fat loss is simply impossible!

However, it’s the abdominal fat that creates the greatest health risk to a woman. This abdominal fat seems to rear its ugly head when a woman reaches her mid- forties or peri-menopause (the years leading up to menopause). Hormonal fluctuations brought on by lifestyle factors and menopause have a significant effect on a woman’s ability to fight weight gain. However it must be pointed out that absolute weight gain is determined first and foremost by non-hormonal factors such as poor nutritional habits and lack of regular exercise, and not menopause itself.

By the time a woman reaches her late thirties, she is starting to lose muscle mass. This loss of muscle mass speeds up a little each decade of life so when a woman reaches her forties, it is estimated she will GAIN about 500g of fat each ensuing year…..that’s a weight gain of 5kg every ten years!

Inactive women can lose up to 5% of muscle mass each decade. Active women will also lose muscle mass but at a much slower rate, especially if they maintain a regular weight training program.

A lack of muscle mass simply allows more room for fat cells to spread and take a strong hold. In other words, if you have more fat cells than muscle tissue, you will find it difficult to keep the weight off long-term without some form of regular strength training to help build muscle.

These pictures are 9 months apart, that still blows my mind and I’m so proud for how far I have come. I am happy about how I look, I am even happier about how I FEEL. I have heard comments about looking like I need to eat a cheeseburger, and all I have to say is okay! 😂🍔 I love cheeseburgers! But really, you’re damned if you do you’re damned if you don’t! I am happy with my body, I am happy with how I look and most importantly I am thrilled that I am healthy! Health is the most important thing to me when it comes to maintaining my weight now and I work hard to do this! I lived for years feeling the pains physically and mentally of being unhealthy so health will always come first in my journey. I remember the fears of obesity related illnesses, and wanting to better my life so I could live a long healthy life so I would be able to see my children grow. I am happy to report my BMI started at 42.8 and is now 20.8, which is healthy for my height of 5’2! Weight loss isn’t about just being “skinny” or image -> it’s about HEALTH! ❤️⁠
