MIXTAPE Readings 3: Uzma Aslam Khan reads from her latest book The Miraculous True History of Nomi Ali.
Uzma Aslam Khan’s latest novel, The Miraculous True History of Nomi Ali, is a classically and lyrically constructed novel telling the story of a forgotten episode from our history.
A much-needed work of historical fiction, the novel deals with the Andaman Islands and the prison colony that was established there during the British rule. This part of the pre-partition history of the subcontinent has somehow slipped through the mainstream recollection and has been reduced to a footnote.
Khan reads from the book after our recent podcast episode where we talked to her about all of her novels.

Based on a true story, My Pure Land revolves around a mother and her two daughters who end up in \ gun battle in order to protect their home from large group of armed men.
Directed by, the British-Pakistani filmmaker, Sam Masud, the film is inspired from the life of Nazo Dharejo, titles as "the toughest woman in Sindh." Masud describes the film as "a modern-day feminist Western set in Pakistan, based on the extraordinary true story of one woman and her family who defended their home and land from 200 bandits."
In Search of Fatima by Ghada Karmi, is a very touching memoir. She is a Palestinian-British doctor, academic and author.
The memoir chronicles her family's journey through the loss of their home and how all the five members struggled with their identity in a new country. Being the youngest in the family, Ghada also maps out her becoming aware of the contradictions and conflicts of her two identities and her attempts at their reconciliation.
Karmi’s memoirs illustrate how for so many the political and personal are inseparable. This is one of this books that stays with you as it ends on an optimistic note.
Empires of the Indus
Empires of the Indus: The Story of a River is a non-fiction book by Alice Albinia is a book that came up during our podcast, Episode 5: Sharing stories of Water with Saba Dar.
Alice covers her journey from Karachi to Tibet, along the Indus River and during this unique trip gives an insight into the communities as well as the history and political framework of the countries through which the Indus flows and how it has impacted the might water body.
It is an engaging page turner and gives some interesting insights into some communities that don’t always make it to mainstream media. For me personally, it was my first introduction to the Sheedi community in Pakistan.
