Summer is here and the heat is on! Seriously everyone, we all need to stay cool and hydrated. Texas had 279 heat related deaths last year and 1 so far this year – let’s not add to that total.
Here are symptoms of heat exhaustion – headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, irritability, thirst, heavy sweating and elevated body temperature.
If you experience these do the following ASAP – move to an air-conditioned place, take a cold shower or use cold compresses, drink plenty of fluids and remove tight or extra layers of clothing. These steps will help get your temperature down and cool your body.
Also – pets can overheat as well – in fact, they do it more easily because they have few sweat glands and can’t cool off by sweating. Signs to watch out for in pets are – excessive panting or drooling, difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, incoordination or stumbling, sudden collapse or seizures.
To prevent this in pets – never leave them outside on a hot day, make sure they have access to fresh water, shade and shelter away from direct sunlight, walk them in the morning before the temps rise (we’ve been doing this lately), and NEVER leave a pet alone in a parked car. If possible keep your pets inside during the heat except for bathroom breaks. We have a doggie door and it’s an amazing invention!
Keep yourself and your furry friends safe and cool during these HOT times!
