It is still Second Chance month! I feel this is an appropriate time to share more about forces prison labor and the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution.

As you know, the 13th Amendment was enacted in 1865 and outlawed slavery.

With one major exception.

Section I of the amendment reads:

“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

One problem in 1865 was that with the end to slavery, there would be huge labor shortages particularly in agriculture.

Leaving this carve out provided a way for cheap (free) labor to help resolve some of the shortages.

Since 1865, the prison industry has profited from exploitation of labor. (And we all benefit).

In a capitalist society, this opportunity for profit incentiveses mass incarceration. More incarcerated people = more money for the industry at many points including probation, fines and fees, commissary and phone calls, and free/cheap labor.

There are efforts underway to remove the exception from the 13th Amendment, and to address exploitation in other ways.

I encourage you to research how your community is impacted by mass incarceration and slavery, and get involved in the advocacy to end slavery.

All month episodes on Impostrix Podcast feature formerly incarcerated folks talking about their reentry and the experiences of returning to or starting a career after incarceration. Tune in to hear their voices.

It's Second Chance Month so this month wpe will be sharing lots of information about the wide reach of the carceral state and the broad impact it has on the lives of people impacted by incarceration.

And, since we talk about career, we will share info on how involvement in the criminal legal system impacts career and financial stability.

Ending barriers to reentry is vital to the health of our communities, our families, and to individuals.

Successful reentry means lower recidivism, which means not commiting new crime.

It means families together.

It means self sufficiency.

Why wouldn't we want that?

Join us on Monday night as I speak with and about her experience navigating reentry.

I woke up to a text from a friend abiut the tragic, untimely, and potentially preventable death of Jessica Pettway.

This is not okay.

Black women are not okay as we receive this news.

Why?

Because this could be us. Our sisters. Mother's. Loved ones.

Many of us have had misdiagnosis, or have faught to be heard by the medical professionals sworn to care for all of us.

I'm so sad for Ms. Pettway and her loved ones. Rest in Power.

Women of color are amazing. There is no denying, we are the s**t!

My dear friend and volunteer social media post creator did some research this week after our release of AJ's episode on labor unions. Here are some really interesting facts she found.

Neither Lauren or I share racial, cultural, or ethnic identities with most of the women and communities highlighted here. We also acknowledge the whitewashing of history and mislabeling, misidentifying, and misnaming of our histories. If you spot an inaccuracy, please let me know!

We are bringing another history episode in honor of Black History Month! This time on labor organizing.

There is SO much to unpack in this episode with . As someone without much knowledge or context about labor unions, this episode is fascinating to me.

In this episode we discuss:
🎯 What is a labor union, and why?

🎯 Significance of labor unions in the US

🎯 The first recorded instance of labor organizing

🎯 The history of exclusion in labor organizing movements

🎯 Unions as a means to an end in movements for collective ownership of power and autonomy

🎯 The need for intentional inclusivity of Black, Trans and Q***r, and people with disabilities into the labor movement and organizing.

Interest piqued?

This episode is now available on streaming platforms and on YouTube. Don't forget to leave a review after you listen/watch!Are you a dues paying member of a labor union?
