A NYS Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) is a dental assistant that has been registered by NYS and completed all the requirements listed out by the Office of Professions. A NYS RDA has a list of "chairside functions" they can legally perform. Any Dental Assistant that is not a NYS RDA may not perform the list of duties that the NYS RDA is licensed to do. New York State does not mandate a Dental Assistant be licensed to perform certain functions like sterilization or passing instruments. But they do require them to be registered for certain functions like updating a patient's medical history or take a dental impression. If they are a NYS RDA, their registration must be displayed in the office. What is a Dental Assistant?
