A NYS Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) is a dental assistant that has been registered by NYS and completed all the requirements listed out by the Office of Professions. A NYS RDA has a list of "chairside functions" they can legally perform. Any Dental Assistant that is not a NYS RDA may not perform the list of duties that the NYS RDA is licensed to do. New York State does not mandate a Dental Assistant be licensed to perform certain functions like sterilization or passing instruments. But they do require them to be registered for certain functions like updating a patient's medical history or take a dental impression. If they are a NYS RDA, their registration must be displayed in the office. What is a Dental Assistant? A Dental Assistant is the chairside partner to the Dentist that helps them throughout the patients procedure. They help the patient also throughout the procedure by explaining procedures and helping them feel comfortable.
