Episode 3 of the “Why Do You?” podcast features world famous photographer Timothy Archibald who shares with us how his world and work have changed shape through his life with his son Eli who has autism.
Timothy’s work used to offer him a large world where he was regularly traveling the world and meeting people from other cultures. As he entered into fatherhood, he struggled to understand or connect with his son, Eli, who wasn’t diagnosed as autistic until he was 6 years old.
“It was almost like my world had been very big and every day with the challenges with Eli, it was like my world was getting smaller and smaller” is how he perceived it at the time.
Something changed, though, when Timothy brought out his camera and realized that Eli wanted to participate in his photography — they finally had something they could do together.
This led to a project series, Echolilia and a book called Echolilia: Sometimes I Wonder. Through his photography, he was able to discover the world and how his son was perceiving it.
