We want to start throwing our book recommendations out there for you guys. Although we mainly cover books focusing on sobriety and the negative effects of alcohol, we certainly have to expand into other wellness categories that result in a more well rounded approach to living. These are two books by Ryan Holiday that focus on, hence the names, Discipline and Stillness. Enjoy, and please let us know what you think!

“When you quit the alcohol, your brain chemistry will once again be out of balance for a while until it readapts to life as it is supposed to be lived. Our goal is to take the struggle and pain out of giving up drinking, so it's important that you take some supplements to ensure you don't have to deal with a low mental state during the kick period.”

Book number 2 in our book discussion series: Alcohol Lied To Me by Craig Beck

Via the Publisher's Summary: "Craig Beck was a successful and functioning professional man in spite of a ‘two bottles of wine a night’ drinking habit. For 20 years, he struggled with problem drinking, all the time refusing to label himself an alcoholic because he did not think he met the stereotypical image that the word portrayed. Discover why all 'will-power' based attempts to stop drinking will fail (exactly as they are destined to do). Slowly Craig discovered the truth about alcohol addiction, and one by one, all the lies he had previously believed started to fall apart. For the first time, he noticed that he genuinely did not want to drink anymore. In this book, he will lead you though the same remarkable process. No need to declare yourself an alcoholic. A permanent cure, not a lifetime struggle. No group meetings or expensive rehab. No humiliation, no pain and 100% no ‘will-power’ required. Treats the source of the problem, not the symptoms."

What was supposed to be an interview episode took a more serious tone– We discuss the very ugly reality that many face with alcoholism, and that is death. A couple months ago we lost a very great friend of ours, and as months have gone by we reflect on this episode and continue the fight for a sober society.

As the weather starts to cool and the seasons start to change we remain aware that this is a time of year that can be tough on people. Seasonal depression seems to become more and more prevalent each year.

So, as the days get a little darker, make sure you put yourself and your sobriety at the top of your priority list. Talk to your sponsor, people you trust, or even us (we care, a lot!), and start good habits when you're still feeling good!

In this ep we're talking relapse– what you should do to prevent them and what steps to take if you find yourself having relapsed. Also, our hometown of Charlotte, NC has made big steps in creating "social districts", which allow drinking in the streets, so we touch on our repeating topic of societies focus on alcohol.

Carson: "Number one, we wanna help people, but also we're helping ourselves by helping other people. That's an amazing and an unselfish way to be able to help yourself. We genuinely want to touch any lives that we possibly can and that's what you get from a community. It's also comforting to be able to hear that other people are going through just the same thing."

Pat: "Yeah, absolutely. In the 12-step program in recovery, one of the main things that they talk about is 'the best way to help yourself is to help a fellow addict.' I am a firm believer in that. One of the reasons we're doing this is that we're trying to help as many people as we can: One, I enjoy helping people, but two, it is helping with my own sobriety. I wouldn't be doing it if it was a hindrance on my sobriety."

"You're worthy of treatment. You're worthy of asking for that help because so many people struggle with feeling like, 'you know what, I'm just an addict. I'm just an alcoholic F it, right? Like there's no point it's not gonna get better. So why bother?' It does get better. There's millions of people that recover from this, daily.

And then the other thing I would say is to the families is, you know, there are resources out there to help you help your loved one... Because families hold a lot of weight in this, right. I mean, I think most of you in here can speak to the impact that your family has had on your sobriety. And so that would be the other people that I would reach out to is just the people that have loved ones that are struggling, know that there are resources for you to help your loved ones out so you don't have to continue to see them struggle." -Cassie, Episode 12

We are so excited to be implementing book discussions into our podcast. We had to start off with one of the greatest books on the subject of sobriety: Alcohol Explained by William Porter.

Via the Publisher's Summary: "Alcohol Explained is the definitive, ground-breaking guide to alcohol and alcoholism. It explains how alcohol affects human beings on a chemical, physiological and psychological level, from those first drinks right up to chronic alcoholism. Alcoholism and problem drinking seems illogical to those on the outside, indeed it is equally perplexing for the alcoholic or problem drinker. This book provides a logical, easy to follow explanation of the phenomenon and detailed instructions on how to beat it. Despite being entirely scientific and factual in nature the book is presented in an accessible and easily understandable format."
