Danny Cat faces tough crowd while tackling Traffic Safety

Knysna Municipality teamed up with Road Safety Management within the Western Cape Mobility Department to tackle traffic challenges at Rheenendal: Annies Day Care and Rheenendal Primary School. Danny Cat, a child traffic safety ambassador and usually a firm favourite, faced a tough audience today at both venues. The officials from the municipality and the Western Cape Road Safety Department paid a visit to the daycare centre and the primary school to address pressing traffic concerns, including excessive speeding, which poses a direct threat to the safety of our young learners. Led by Assistant Director Lulamile Lakata of the Western Cape Road Safety Department, Traffic Officer Fred Smith, and Traffic Warden Kulile Ntlemeza, who took on the role of Danny Cat for the day, the team delivered an educational talk promoting road safety. They also distributed child safety guides to further enhance safety awareness among the students. Despite the initial tough crowd, the day concluded with Danny Cat getting his groove back as some of the learners embraced the safety message.

Landmark election marks 30 years of electoral democracy

Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said the 2024 General Election is a landmark event as it marks 30 years of electoral democracy. The President has declared 29 May 2024 the date for the National General and Provincial Elections. “The Commission reiterates its willingness and ability to deliver this mammoth national project. All staff of the Commission stand ready to fulfil their tasks and thus ensure that the Commission meets its constitutional duties pertaining to the 2024 general elections,” said Mamabolo, at a media briefing in Pretoria. He said this year’s election introduces novel experiences for the voters such as a third ballot in the National and Provincial Elections as well as the participation of independent candidates for the very first time. For purposes of candidate nomination, he said the Commission promotes the use of the online Candidate Nomination (CNS) platform. “It is convenient and facilitates compliance with the requirements of the law as it provides a compliance dashboard for users. Furthermore, the online platform generates pro-forma invoices and a payment gateway for the payment of prescribed deposits,” Mamabolo said. He said all independent candidates and political parties who intend to contest this general election must submit nomination requirements by 17:00 on 08 March 2024. “The Electoral Commission will, after verifying the submitted nomination documents, issue notices on non-compliance where such are warranted. These notices will be issued on 18 March 2024 and those issued with such notices must rectify non-compliance by 20 March 2024. “In previous elections, there were candidates who were nominated by more than one political party. The law now obliges the Commission to notify affected parties and offer them an opportunity to either remove the said candidate and substitute or confirm their continued candidature. “Our electoral scheme acknowledges that it is a matter of immense national importance for the citizens to know who the nominated candidates are. The publication of the provisional lists of candidates goes to the heart of the vote based on informed choices,” Mamabolo said. Mamabolo said the provisional lists of candidates will be published for inspection on 26 and 27 March. Mamabolo said interested parties may object against certain prospective candidates who are nominated. “Such objections must be lodged with the Commission on 27 March 2024. The Commission will decide on these objections on 28 March 2024. “Any person or political party or entity that is not satisfied with the decision of the Commission may approach the Electoral Court to appeal the objection decision. The Electoral Court’s appeals must be lodged by 02 April 2024. The Electoral Court will determine appeals relating to candidates on 9 April 2024,” he said. Mamabolo said the conclusion of the candidate nomination process will set in motion the ballot paper printing project. According to Mamabolo, the official list of the 23 292 voting stations to be used in the elections will be availed for inspection from 12 April 2024. “This list will include the addresses of voting stations as well as the stopping times of the 33 mobile voting stations. The project of contracting these voting stations well advanced,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Knysna Municipality's joint endeavors with Unisa Library

Knysna Municipality and Unisa Library commemorated collaborative efforts at the Knysna Town Library on May 6, 2024. The event was graced by a distinguished delegation from the municipality, alongside esteemed Unisa officials representing the Cape Town and George campuses in the Western Cape. Unisa Library takes pride in forging partnerships with municipal libraries, extending invaluable access to a diverse array of library and information services for Unisa students residing far from our regional hubs. These municipal libraries, affectionately termed Public Partner Libraries by Unisa, serve as beacons of knowledge and support for our students. During the gathering, Municipal Manager Ombali Sebola outlined the municipality's vision, strategic objectives, and ongoing initiatives. He emphasized the pivotal role of education in community development and highlighted the municipality's dedication to staff development, particularly through study benefits and incentives. He stressed the importance of empowering the youth through education and critical thinking. He said the most important thing is empowering the youth so that they can be ready for the future, and that “if I am empowering you by giving you a grass-cutting job, I am not empowering you. If I am giving you a tender job, I am not empowering you. You can only empower the youth through their minds.” Dr. Shahieda Jansen shed light on Unisa's transformation from a correspondence to a CODeL university, emphasizing the importance of the signed MoU as a testament to the official agreement between Unisa Library and communities. She expressed Unisa's eagerness to collaborate with municipalities on community development projects and shared her passion for initiatives like the School Belonging initiative. She dove deep into the sea of communication projects that are aimed at breaking the distance. She spoke about how prisons and graveyards are overflowing with men with untapped potential, proving that even in the most unexpected places, stories are waiting to be told. She reflected on her literary journey, from her book "Masculinity meets humanity" to the birth of "Nali ibali lamadoda," the carving out of spaces where men meet and tell their stories. Ms. Cele, one of the speakers also from Unisa, reiterated the profound significance of the partnership relationship, emphasizing that access to knowledge is a fundamental human right. She underscored the vital role of partnership libraries in providing essential services to Unisa students, including administrative support, access to technology, and conducive study spaces. She went on to emphasize that the partnership fosters student success and provides a positive learning experience, emphasizing the importance of maintaining and strengthening this invaluable relationship. The event also provided a platform for Unisa students to share their perspectives on studying at Unisa, further emphasizing the transformative impact of these partnerships on their educational journey. The partnership is dedicated to fostering collaborative efforts and ensuring equitable access to education and resources for all Unisa students, irrespective of their geographical location. Together, we will persist in empowering minds and enriching lives through the transformative power of knowledge and learning.
