Confused about microphones? KNOW THESE 2 THINGS! (put your favorite microphone down in the description!)

In a simple way, microphones are like paint brushes for sound; some are bright, some are dark, some are purple, and some taste like snozzberries! Talking about sound is sometimes like dancing about architecture, but here are the two biggest factors to consider.

Transient Response- Pushing a shopping cart is fairly easy and you can get it moving quickly with little effort. It reacts to small changes in your force. Not so pushing a car, and once you get it moving it takes time to stop! All microphones have a diaphram that is either big and slow to smooth the sound or small and fast to create a detailed reproduction. Neither right or wrong and different types of construction lend themselves to either style; a dynamic type microphone like the SM7b would be the big slow kind while the Nuemann TLM 107 would be a fast condensor type.

Frequency Response- This is how bright or dark or mid rangy the sound is. Every microphone has a unique emphasis on the spectrum of sound it records... (did you know your ears as well pay attention to certain frequencies more than others?) Ribbon type microphones like the Shure KSM 313 tend to be darker and capture more low end while condensor types will generally sound brighter.

Using the right tools for the job helps you paint a beautiful picture... but what is right is up to you!
