NFT marketplace is being extremely open about their free minting tool. While the tool was originally built to allow creators to list NFTs without paying gas fees, it’s morphed into a fraudulent system. 

Last week, OpenSea confessed that more than 80% of the digital collectibles uploaded through the free minting tool were spam or plagiarized work. 

The platform is working to find solutions that “appease users while deterring bad actors,” but how do you shut the floodgates once they’ve been opened?

On February 1st, will auction five pairs of digital and physical collectibles. To access your piece of digital art created by Fabian Oefner, you first acquire your physical element, a piece of carbon fiber that was sent to the International Space Station by the automaker in 2020. The carbon fiber houses a QR code that grants access to your NFT. 

When those five NFTs are viewed one after the other in rapid succession, they create a GIF-like asset, showing a space-traveling vehicle, leaving behind a trail of exotic nuts and bolts. 

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann shared that this drop is so incredibly limited to protect the brand’s reputation. “The highest value we have is our brand, so we have to act very carefully,” Winkelmann said. 

Depending on how the Space Time Memory project goes, we could see Lamborghini racing even further into the crypto space.
