9 जून (पुण्यतिथि) : बिरसा मुंडा

रांची क्षेत्र में मुंडा जनजाति सामूहिक भू स्वामित्व आधारित कृषि व्यवस्था चलाती थी जिसे 'खूंटकट्टी' कहा जाता था। 19वीं सदी में उत्तरी मैदानी भागों से आनेवाले जमींदारों ने इस व्यवस्था पर चोट कर आदिवासियों का शोषण किया और उनकी आर्थिक पद्धति को बिगाड़ डाला।

इसी दौर में इसाई मिशनरियों ने भी इस क्षेत्र में प्रवेश कर इनके सामाजिक पद्धति पर चोट की। फलस्वरूप मुंडा जनता में जमींदारों, मिशनरियों के साथ ब्रिटिश साम्राज्यवाद के विरुद्ध भावनाएँ उत्पन्न हो गयीं। 1880 के दशक में जमीन बचाने के लिए मुंडा लोगों ने कानूनी लड़ाई लड़ी जो 'सरदारी लड़ाई' के नाम से जानी जाती है। पर वे इसमें असफल रहे। अब संघर्ष स्वयं का हो गया...

इस संघर्ष को अपना नायक बिरसा में मिला जिसने कुछ शिक्षा भी पाई थी और वैष्णवों के प्रभाव में भी था। बिरसा ने खुद को पैगम्बर घोषित कर धार्मिक विश्वास के आधार पर जनता को जोड़ा। उसके साम्राज्यवादी विरोधी चरित्र की यह उग्रता थी कि वे महारानी विक्टोरिया के पुतले पर तीरंदाजी का अभ्यास करते। बिरसा को इसके लिए 1895 में दो साल के लिए अंग्रेजों ने जेल में रखा... पर बिरसा और कट्टर होकर निकला। संथाल गाँवों में अब सभाएँ होने लगीं... और सारा क्षेत्र इस लोकगीत से गूँज उठा - "कटोंग, बाबा कटोंग... साहब कटोंग-कटोंग... शरी कटोंग...!"

24 दिसंबर 1899 को बिरसा के नेतृत्व में पहला हमला हुआ... अंग्रेजपरस्तो को पहले निशाना बनाया गया... फिर चर्च जलाये गए... बाद में पुलिस पर हमले होने लगे। पर तीर कमान से कितना मुकाबला किया जाता ? 9 जनवरी को शैल रकाब पहाड़ी पर बिरसा और उसके साथी पकड़ लिए गए और रहस्यमय तरीके से 9 जून 1900 को बिरसा की जेल में ही मृत्यु हो गई।

असफल होते हुए भी यह विद्रोह बिना उपलब्धि के नहीं थी। सरकार को इस क्षेत्र में खूंटकट्टी के अधिकार को मान्यता देनी पड़ी। जबरन बेगार पर प्रतिबन्ध लगाया गया। यह सिद्ध हुआ कि 'हिंसक आन्दोलन सदैव असफल ही नहीं होते'। इन सबका नायक बिरसा मुंडा था जिसे आज भगवान का दर्जा प्राप्त है। ऐसे जननायक को उसकी पुण्यतिथि पर नमन...!!!

Tribute to freedom fighter Birsa Munda on his Punya Tithi. He attained Sadgati this day, the 9th of June, in 1900 at the age of only 24 years. During this short period, this brave son of Maa Bharti not only spearheaded the Indian freedom struggle in the tribal regions of then Bengal Presidency (that spread to today’s regions of Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand) but also played an instrumental role in preventing Christi@n missionary activities in his region. Had he lived long, the History of India would have been different!

Farmers across India led a comfortable life and earned revenue from their crop yields. The British started looting them in the name of taxes that soon resulted in the latter’s impoverishment. Besides, the British also appropriated land rights of many. This was the same condition in the tribal regions where the Munda community that Birsa Munda belonged, lived. Soon many tribal farmers not only became poor but also lost their land rights. Besides, many farmers, who once had their own farmlands became farm laborers as a result of British oppression. Birsa Munda led a series of revolts against the British against this oppression. Many tribals joined him. He became their leader. Birsa Munda, himself an expert in archery and other guerrilla warfare techniques, not only trained himself but also his group of hundreds and thousands of freedom fighters. Under his leadership, many farmers stopped paying taxes to the British.

Birsa Munda prevented cow-slaughter in his region and raised voice against it. He raised a voice against the conversion of tribals by the Christian missionaries and saved many from falling into the conversion trap. He said that Munda Raj had begun and that the rule of Queen Victoria was over.

The British fired to death hundreds of tribal freedom fighters besides also imprisoning many. But they were unable to catch Birsa Munda. The British announced a reward for those who would provide information about his whereabouts but in vain. For two years Birsa Munda remained in hiding then, but during this period he spearheaded his groups to continue their guerrilla attacks on the British. During his hiding he also visited the Jaggannath shrine of Puri.

The British arrested Birsa Munda from Jamkopai forest in Chakradharpur in March 1900 and sent him for trial. He breathed his last in Ranchi jail during the trials after three months.

*2 अप्रैल संघर्ष समिति के तत्वाधान मे लड़ी जा रही भारत बंद लोकतांत्रिक आंदोलन 2 अप्रैल 2018 में दर्ज किए गए दलित समाज के युवा छात्रों पर फर्जी मुकदमे वापस लिए जाने हेतु लगभग 18 सांसद, 12 राज्य मंत्री और 15 विधायकों सहित अनुसूचित मोर्चा के क्षेत्रीय महामंत्री, प्रदेश महामंत्री, प्रदेश अध्यक्ष, प्रदेश क्षेत्र कोषाध्यक्ष, राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्षों सहित मुकदमे वापसी की गुहार व मांग कर चुका है लेकिन वर्तमान सरकार ने अभी तक दलित समाज के युवाओं छात्रों का भविष्य बर्बाद होने का कोई संज्ञान नहीं लिया है इस बाबत आगामी विधानसभा चुनाव 2022 से पहले दलितों पर दर्ज 2 अप्रैल 2018 के मुकदमों को वापस लेकर समाज को अपनी विचारधारा से प्रभावित करने का मौका समिति दे रही है अन्यथा में समाज अपने साथ किया गया अन्याय का जबाव वोट की चोट देने के लिए बैठा हुआ है 2 अप्रैल संघर्ष समिति निरंतर मुकदमे वापसी की लड़ाई लड़ती रहेगी।*

Periyar: Known as Socrates of Asia

E.V. The extent to which Ramaswamy, or Periyar, influenced the social and political fabric of Tamil Nadu can be gauged from the fact that he is respected by people from all walks of life, from communism to the Dalit movement, to Tamil nationalism, rationalism and feminism. See them as a guide, not just respect. He is also called Socrates of Asia.

Born into a religious Hindu family, Periyar was a staunch opponent of religion. From an early age, he started attacking the evils of Brahmanism and Hinduism. He did not believe in idolatry, nor in Vedanta or any other Hindu philosophy. He not only celebrated Holi of religious texts but also considered Ravana as his hero.

Periyar, influenced by the principles of Mahatma Gandhi, joined the Congress. Meanwhile, he played an important role in the Vaikom Satyagraha in Kerala in 1924. Till now his status in Tamil Nadu was very high. After the Vaikom Satyagraha, people called him 'Vaikom Veeran', meaning 'Vaikom's hero'. This was the time when his conflict with the Brahmins and the so-called upper class in the Congress escalated and he left the party.

Later, Periyar started the 'Self Respect' movement i.e. Dalit-Harijan and Swabhiman movement for women. It is believed that these movements inspired a large section of the population in Tamil and South India for social reform. That is why Periyar is placed in the ranks of social reformers like Raja Rammohan Roy and others. But he was also an experienced politician.

Kerala's Vaikom Satyagraha was a movement to give Dalits the right to enter the prestigious temple here and to protest on the roads leading to the temple. Along with Mahatma Gandhi, many other great leaders supported this movement. Periyar also played a key role in the agitation and was sent to jail. Eventually this movement succeeded.

After this Periyar became a hero in Tamil Nadu. Vaikom Satyagraha was against Brahmanism and Periyar himself was an outspoken opponent of Brahmins. His rapidly growing popularity in the South is believed to have hurt a large section of the Brahmins in the Congress. Periyar, on the other hand, was of the view that attempts were made to suppress his role in the Vaikom Satyagraha.

Another incident can be mentioned here for Periyar's clash with the Congress leaders. At that time, the Congress party was providing financial assistance to some gurukulas in Tamil Nadu. Many Gurukuls here had different eating and drinking arrangements for Brahmins and children of other castes and there was also a difference in the quality of food. Periyar wanted to raise his voice against it but the party never paid attention to it.

Similarly, in 1925, Periyar proposed to the Tamil Nadu Congress to give more participation to non-Brahmins in the party leadership. But the party rejected it outright. After this incident, Periyar openly revolted in the Congress. At the same time, he announced among his supporters that he would one day wipe out the Congress from the state.

To sharpen his political voice, Periyar founded the Justice Party in 1938. Then in 1944 he dissolved it and founded Dravida Munnetra Kalagham (DMK). Periyar's dream of ousting the Congress from Tamil Nadu came true in 1968 when the DMK formed the first government in the state.

Periyar is also known as the next man of his time. This can be seen from their views on women's emancipation. He campaigned on issues such as ending child marriage, giving widows the right to remarry, and considering marriage a partnership rather than a sacred bond. In his speeches, he used to tell people not to accept anything just by saying it. Periyar said, 'Think. Accept it only if you think you can accept it, otherwise leave it. '

Decreasing farm size and increasing hunger

Although the farmers have returned home after the Modi government withdrew three agriculture laws, seriously considering the very foundation of India's economic policy, the crisis is so deep that providing food from agriculture to the country's growing population is not a new challenge. Has fallen.

It is a great tragedy that after independence the country could not become self-sufficient in food. Today, with the rapid conversion of farmland to other uses, farmers are turning away from agriculture, and the threat to food security in India is increasing. Not only this, the depletion of agricultural land is also affecting the socio-economic fabric of India. While the government has proud stories of converting barren land into arable land, it is a sad fact that the cultivable land in our country has been declining year by year, as mentioned in the 'Westland Atlas 2019' published by the Department of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development and ISRO's National Remote Sensing Center. Due to population growth, demand for food is increasing and our dependence on other countries of the world is increasing in this direction.

In an agrarian state like Punjab, 14,000 hectares or 0.33 per cent of the total land is under cultivation, 62,000 hectares in West Bengal have become desolate and 42,000 hectares in Kerala. The largest in the country
In a populous state of Uttar Pradesh, the figure is even more dangerous than an atomic bomb. In this state, 48,000 hectares of agricultural land is being destroyed every year in the name of development. Most of the fertile farmland is being acquired for houses, factories, roads. It is also being ignored why the per capita income increases due to the depletion of agricultural land, but then the unemployment rate also increases. It is also true that due to increase in work under MGNREGA, farm laborers are not getting labor and farmers are giving up farming due to non-availability of labor.

According to the National Sample Survey, the country has 140 million hectares of agricultural land. In 1992, rural households owned 117 million hectares of land, which was reduced to only 92 million hectares by 2013. If this trend continues, after three years, by 2023, the area under cultivation will be 80 million hectares.

Where does so much farmland go in the end and who puts it in your throat? The main reasons for this are loss of agribusiness, inadequate prices of produce, climate change etc. Not only that, in the name of development, 2014 million hectares of land will be offered for the six proposed industrial corridors currently being built across the country, which will also include farms. Many statistics on how much barren or waste land was converted into work can be recorded in government reports, but the figures for converting farms into concrete are disappointing. We should all keep in mind that a country which has a population of 150 crore by 2031, how can food security be achieved without expanding the agricultural sector.

The government's efforts to take care of the farmers are adding to their worries. Take seeds, in the last five years, there have been cases of foreign seeds like Bt being expensive but hurting farmers. The claim that such seeds have high yields and no pests is false. Despite this, government officials are pressuring farmers to use foreign genetic seeds. Indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is affecting farmers and their farms. Despite this, the government wants farmers to abandon traditional farming and adopt new technologies. As a result, the cost of cultivation is increasing and the profit is decreasing in comparison.

Seriously, there are some financial institutions behind this conspiracy that are looking for ways to consolidate their market in rural India. In fact, farmers have become indebted. The National Sample Survey data shows that 82% of farmers in Andhra Pradesh are in debt. In Punjab and Maharashtra, the figure averages 65 per cent. These states have the highest number of farmer suicides. The country can fill the stomachs of the subsistence farmers if the farmers get the right price for their produce, proper storage, marketing facilities, reduction of cost of agricultural produce, ban on entry of capitalists in this business. .
