9 जून (पुण्यतिथि) : बिरसा मुंडा

रांची क्षेत्र में मुंडा जनजाति सामूहिक भू स्वामित्व आधारित कृषि व्यवस्था चलाती थी जिसे 'खूंटकट्टी' कहा जाता था। 19वीं सदी में उत्तरी मैदानी भागों से आनेवाले जमींदारों ने इस व्यवस्था पर चोट कर आदिवासियों का शोषण किया और उनकी आर्थिक पद्धति को बिगाड़ डाला।

इसी दौर में इसाई मिशनरियों ने भी इस क्षेत्र में प्रवेश कर इनके सामाजिक पद्धति पर चोट की। फलस्वरूप मुंडा जनता में जमींदारों, मिशनरियों के साथ ब्रिटिश साम्राज्यवाद के विरुद्ध भावनाएँ उत्पन्न हो गयीं। 1880 के दशक में जमीन बचाने के लिए मुंडा लोगों ने कानूनी लड़ाई लड़ी जो 'सरदारी लड़ाई' के नाम से जानी जाती है। पर वे इसमें असफल रहे। अब संघर्ष स्वयं का हो गया...

इस संघर्ष को अपना नायक बिरसा में मिला जिसने कुछ शिक्षा भी पाई थी और वैष्णवों के प्रभाव में भी था। बिरसा ने खुद को पैगम्बर घोषित कर धार्मिक विश्वास के आधार पर जनता को जोड़ा। उसके साम्राज्यवादी विरोधी चरित्र की यह उग्रता थी कि वे महारानी विक्टोरिया के पुतले पर तीरंदाजी का अभ्यास करते। बिरसा को इसके लिए 1895 में दो साल के लिए अंग्रेजों ने जेल में रखा... पर बिरसा और कट्टर होकर निकला। संथाल गाँवों में अब सभाएँ होने लगीं... और सारा क्षेत्र इस लोकगीत से गूँज उठा - "कटोंग, बाबा कटोंग... साहब कटोंग-कटोंग... शरी कटोंग...!"

24 दिसंबर 1899 को बिरसा के नेतृत्व में पहला हमला हुआ... अंग्रेजपरस्तो को पहले निशाना बनाया गया... फिर चर्च जलाये गए... बाद में पुलिस पर हमले होने लगे। पर तीर कमान से कितना मुकाबला किया जाता ? 9 जनवरी को शैल रकाब पहाड़ी पर बिरसा और उसके साथी पकड़ लिए गए और रहस्यमय तरीके से 9 जून 1900 को बिरसा की जेल में ही मृत्यु हो गई।

असफल होते हुए भी यह विद्रोह बिना उपलब्धि के नहीं थी। सरकार को इस क्षेत्र में खूंटकट्टी के अधिकार को मान्यता देनी पड़ी। जबरन बेगार पर प्रतिबन्ध लगाया गया। यह सिद्ध हुआ कि 'हिंसक आन्दोलन सदैव असफल ही नहीं होते'। इन सबका नायक बिरसा मुंडा था जिसे आज भगवान का दर्जा प्राप्त है। ऐसे जननायक को उसकी पुण्यतिथि पर नमन...!!!

Tribute to freedom fighter Birsa Munda on his Punya Tithi. He attained Sadgati this day, the 9th of June, in 1900 at the age of only 24 years. During this short period, this brave son of Maa Bharti not only spearheaded the Indian freedom struggle in the tribal regions of then Bengal Presidency (that spread to today’s regions of Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand) but also played an instrumental role in preventing Christi@n missionary activities in his region. Had he lived long, the History of India would have been different!

Farmers across India led a comfortable life and earned revenue from their crop yields. The British started looting them in the name of taxes that soon resulted in the latter’s impoverishment. Besides, the British also appropriated land rights of many. This was the same condition in the tribal regions where the Munda community that Birsa Munda belonged, lived. Soon many tribal farmers not only became poor but also lost their land rights. Besides, many farmers, who once had their own farmlands became farm laborers as a result of British oppression. Birsa Munda led a series of revolts against the British against this oppression. Many tribals joined him. He became their leader. Birsa Munda, himself an expert in archery and other guerrilla warfare techniques, not only trained himself but also his group of hundreds and thousands of freedom fighters. Under his leadership, many farmers stopped paying taxes to the British.

Birsa Munda prevented cow-slaughter in his region and raised voice against it. He raised a voice against the conversion of tribals by the Christian missionaries and saved many from falling into the conversion trap. He said that Munda Raj had begun and that the rule of Queen Victoria was over.

The British fired to death hundreds of tribal freedom fighters besides also imprisoning many. But they were unable to catch Birsa Munda. The British announced a reward for those who would provide information about his whereabouts but in vain. For two years Birsa Munda remained in hiding then, but during this period he spearheaded his groups to continue their guerrilla attacks on the British. During his hiding he also visited the Jaggannath shrine of Puri.

The British arrested Birsa Munda from Jamkopai forest in Chakradharpur in March 1900 and sent him for trial. He breathed his last in Ranchi jail during the trials after three months.

करतार सिंह सराभा को 16 नवम्बर 1915 को फांसी दे दी गयी थी।
