The ruling Botswana Democratic Party will finally hold primary elections, to elect parliament and council candidates ahead of the October polls.

Speaking this morning during an interview the BDP Spokesperson, Kagelelo Banks Kentse said the delay in holding primary elections, was due to having to align with new constituencies.

This was after constituencies were increased from 57 to 61 by the delimitation commission.

Kentse said the primary elections could be held by the first week of next month.

Kentse went on further to say the BDP will launch its elections manifesto at the end of next month.

Former President Ian Khama is a fugitive from justice who does not have locus standi (right to appear before court) in Botswana.

This emerged in a case in which High court Judge Barnabas Nyamazabo dismissed with cost a review application filed before the court by Khama and former Directorate of Intelligence Services boss Isaac Kgosi challenging charges against them in relation to illegal possession of ammunition and arms.

Delivering a judgment, Nyamazabo says Khama is aware of the arms and ammunitions charges levelled against him but has not made himself available to be served with the court process and appear in the magistrate court to answer for the charges.

The two men were challenging the Directorate of Public Prosecution’s decision to lay 33 criminal charges against them, saying the accusations are “overly political and maliciously motivated”.

They face 20 [Kgosi] and 13 [Khama] criminal charges, ranging from unlawful possession of fi****ms, arms and ammunition, and stealing by a public officer want the charges reviewed and set aside on grounds that they are outright irrational, made without any iota of evidence and overly politically and maliciously motivated.

Minister of Education and Skills Development Dr. Douglas Letsholathebe says they have taken the decision to add Mathematics to a list of optional subjects.

The minister said the move was implemented taking into account that some learners do not require much mathematics, looking at what they aspire to become.

"We have taken the decision to remove Mathematics from core subject because not everyone requires much of it. For instance, an aspiring Lawyer doesn't need intensive Mathematics," said Letsholathebe.

PRESS RELEASE

NURSES NOW DISPENSING MEDICATIONS IN PUBLIC HEALTH FACILITIES

The Ministry of Health informs members of the public that a court ruling on the above captioned issue last week, indicated that nurses and midwives should continue dispensing medications to members of the public. The court case was a result of developments that followed the announcement by the Botswana Nurses Union (BONU) that their members will no longer dispense medications at public health facilities effective 01 July 2023.

The court judgment therefore, means that nurses and midwives will now dispense medications as they did before.

The ministry will continue to engage unions and other stakeholders on these issues relating to conditions of service for nurses and other health care professionals.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully

Dr Christopher Nyanga
For Permanent Secretary
