Map of Displacement is the story of the millions of Iraqis forced from their homes in the latest wave of violence to sweep through their country. Iraq is now contending with one of the largest internally displaced populations (IDP) in the world, with over three million people driven from their homes since January 2014. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), alone, is host to more than 1.5 million dis

placed persons. Map of Displacement is the account of the current crisis of displacement inside the KRI. It is the story of the enormous human toll Iraqi civilians are paying while war continues to ravage their country. Through intimate narratives of these people who have been violently forced to flee, A Map of Displacement illustrates the magnitude and poignancy of this underreported crisis. Map of Displacement is an interactive website that will allow the readers to navigate through 12 different stories from all over the region, in order to cast a light on the issue through in-depth reporting and compelling visual storytelling. Map of Displacement will premiere on September, 30 at the International Centre of Photography in New York and will be officially presented on October, 13

Happy to see published on Internazionale the documentary "The butcher of Khalakan", one of the stories of Map of Displacement produced by Dario Bosio and Stefano Carini.

Ali's story is a small but important one, that aims to tell in a delicate way what the human cost of the conflict with ISIS is for the millions of Iraqis who lost their houses. Take some time to listen to his words.

“Prima mi sentivo un bambino,” dice Ali. “Ma ora che lavoro, mi sento un uomo”. Ali ha 13 anni ed è arrivato nel Kurdistan iracheno dopo che la sua famiglia è scappata dai combattimenti tra l’esercito iracheno e il gruppo Stato islamico. Ora è costretto a lavorare come macellaio per mantenere la fam…

Mustafa doesn’t understand what dreams and wishes are. Only after he hears the question “what are your dreams and wishes?” a dozen times is he able to answer. “I dreamed that we had a house in Chamchamal,” he responds. His father explains again what dreams and wishes are and Mustafa answers again. “I dream of us at home on a Sunday, just me, my father and my brother. And I know that it will happen soon.”

The story of Mustafa is the story of over a million displaced Iraqis now living in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. For a year, we documented this humanitarian crisis through our project Map of Displacement.

Roads and Kingdoms published Rawsht Twana's story about Mohammed, the young man from Sinjar who decided to start a school for the displaced kids in the unfinished building where they live in Sitak, outside of Sulaiymaniyah.

This is one of the twelve stories that form part of Map of Displacement - find out more at www.mapofdisplacement.com

There is only one teacher in this school. His name is Mohammed, and at 23 years old, he’s barely out of university himself. In fact, he never got to finish his studies in Quranic Science because on the morning of August 3rd, 2014, ISIS attacked his home city of Sinjar, in the north of Iraq. …

One week ago we launched Map of Displacement, a year-long investigation by Metrography Agency into the lives of the displaced Iraqis that now live in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Here's SHAQLUJA, one of the 12 stories that form part of the website, have a look if you haven't had the chance yet!

"The Kurds in northern Iraq were suffering under the burden of a long frontier war with the Islamic State (ISIS), a financial crisis and the arrival of more than one million people displaced by war, altering the ethnic balance of their proto state. Shaqlawa, once a popular holiday destination had become a shelter for thousands of Iraqi Arabs fleeing the grinding war further south who now outnumbered the local Kurdish population."

Photographer Rawsht Twana on the mountains around Shaqlawa working on one of the stories for our collective project Map of Displacement.

Rawsht Twana was born in Qaladze in 1988.

When he was born Saddam moved the entire population of Qaladze to the village of Xabat close to Erbil. Three years later, during the Kurdish uprising against the Baath regime, his family had to escape towards the Iranian border.

“When we were fleeing I remember a car with 35 people in it and the driver who refused to take us. I was with my sister, my two brothers and my mother. I remember having only one shoe and we had the walk the whole way.”

Rawsht has been with Metrography since 2009.
