2023 Oram Awards ceremony & event recap
Winner spotlight Maria Sappho
Last year we introduced a new short video series that showcases past winner’s journeys and projects, as they share their stories from their unique perspectives.
First was Una Lee with the Irish traditional quartet Landless. Next up we’d like to talk about Maria Sappho, the 2021 winner who’s working with mushrooms and AI.
Maria's groundbreaking work has led to the creation of Ostoyae, an extraordinary instrument born from her interest for luthiery and her collaboration with the community-based AI project Chimère.
In this video, she explains the interactions of all these elements and how these trans-species connections led to create music.
“AI [has the] ability to assist in the development of new technological methodologies and design plans. Mushrooms have attention to vibration, environmental change, and complex networked communities. Humans [bring skills in] craft and physical building, facilitation, and creative framing.”

Lou Barnell #bts video for 'Fly Out In The Heat Of Day'
Lou Barnell will be premiering her new project ‘To Fly Out In The Heat Of Day’ in Ireland this weekend, on the 7th (Belfast) and 8th of September (Derry).
'To Fly Out In The Heat Of Day' is a captivating immersive experience that combines experimental audio-visual composition with alchemical sculptures and innovative wearable sensor technology.
Join Lou Barnell as she invites you into her mesmerizing sensory universe, where she brings her dreams to life. Through a unique wearable sound-material sculpture made from reusable thermoplastic and groundbreaking electromyography sensors, she creates a captivating body-sonic score.
As a neurodivergent artist, Lou Barnell's voice serves as her natural instrument. By controlling vocal effects with muscle movements, she not only overcomes challenges with motor skills but also immerses the audience in her world.
Lou explains: ‘As a woman growing up with a learning difficulty, the way I experience the world does not align with the way the world experiences me. To make sense of unfathomable surroundings, I use my voice as a material. My voice can be a compass, or a totem, it can be sculpted, broken and reformed. I use wearable instruments encased in sculptures to contain, shape and release my body and voice.’
To Fly In The Heat Of Day is produced in collaboration with artists and researchers Robin Foster and Courtney Reed, and Sculptor Anthony Bennett.

WINNER SPOTLIGHT - Amble Skuse
As part of our new short video series that showcases past winners’ journeys, we caught up with 2022 winner Amble Skuse during her residency in Sweden with ‘Interdependent Intersections’.
This project is a work in progress featuring Mimu Gloves, Martial Arts, Sound, Video and Performance and aims at setting a new vision of how disability works through technology to a new normative.
Learn from this video how Amble and her team work with movement and body sensors, sound and video art to explore the connect and interdependence on each other and the technology around us - ultimately asking: ‘Is technology a humanising assistance or a way of separating and isolating us?’

Belfast and Derry - Poulomi is coming to your shores for two performances this weekend!
First up on the 2nd of September at the Accidental Theatre in Belfast and the following day, 3rd September is the turn of Derry and the Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company
Poulomi uses her bowed sitar as the primary basis for sonic improvisation and exploration; an allegorical antidote to the objectification of the 'South Asian woman's body' in 'Bollywood' cinema / 'popular culture' and, in a broader sense, affirming her idea of 'Noise' as protest.
The sound of the sitar is then extended with modified cassette decks playing her field recordings, circuit bent toys, optikinetic instruments, kitchen knives, axes and massage tools.
Northern Lights Project presents a series of four concerts in Belfast and Derry featuring past Oram Winners - keep your eyes peeled on their next guests via northernlightsproject.org/
WINNER SPOTLIGHT 🌟
Introducing a new short video series that showcases past winner’s journeys, as they share their stories from their unique perspectives.
First up is Una Lee: the 2020 Oram Awards winner is currently working with the Irish traditional quartet Landless - a harmony-led, all-female vocal quartet.
Landless’ songs are largely drawn from the Irish tradition but can be subtly adjusted to incorporate new harmonies and incredibly subtle, playfully-interacting arrangements.
Una's creativity knows no bounds, as she reveals her innovative use of the ancient Korean poetry form called Hyangga in her work with Landless. She attributes this inspiration to her collaboration with poet Caroline Bergvall, an opportunity made possible through the mentorship program provided by the Oram Awards.
Stay tuned for more inspiring stories in our video series!

Thanks I K L E C T I K for hosting an incredible music fair last weekend. It was a pleasure to spend two days surrounded by music in your beautiful outdoor garden. Thanks to everyone who came on Sunday and were able to witness the mesmerizing FRKTL audio-visual performance.
We are hoping to be at Iklectik again soon. Unfortunately, there is currently uncertainty surrounding the future of Iklectik as the venue site (Old Paradise Yard) may be demolished for a new office development. However, there might be still a chance to reverse Lambeth Council's decision and prevent this from happening.
For all relevant information on how we can overturn this planning application by the developer, please visit Iklectik's profile. Together, we can make a difference and preserve this unique cultural space.
Thank you once again, Iklectik!
Below an excerpt of FRKTL's performance.

Check ‘Distortion Journey’, a stand-out track made by 2022 Oram Award International Winner Rani Jambak in collaboration with Brazilian composer and Mandolin player Victor Angeleas.
This track is part of OneBeat Virtual Mixtape‘s Scores for Uncertain Times which proposes music as a curative practice, as an improvised path of intentional care and ultimately poses the question - can we use our unique practices to examine listening as a practice of care?
OneBeat is also an international music festival and residency program that brings together emerging musical professionals from around the world to collaboratively create original work and to develop a global network of civically engaged music initiatives.

The Oram Awards 2022 at hcmf// - Rani Jambak
You can now watch the performances from The Oram Awards 2022 at HCMF - Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival over on our YouTube channel.
Today is the turn of Rani Fitriana Jambak showcasing ‘Kincia Aia’ - a project she developed during her musicians in residence programme in lockdown with hcmf and the Arts – British Council.
Rather than getting to know the local environment of Huddersfield in person, Rani experienced it through a digital lens, meeting local artists online and receiving guided tours of the area. She was drawn to the Huddersfield canal, and developed an installation based on the traditional water wheels from her home in Minangkabau, West Sumatra to create a live performance mixing sound recordings from both then set to the sensors for the Kincia Aia.
"I want to make a connection between Minangkabau and Huddersfield through soundscapes of nature. I am so inspired by the natural landscapes of Huddersfield and Minangkabau (my ancestor land)."
A sound artist and ecological activist, Rani is interested in our experiences of the environment, and the ancestry found within it. Using field recordings as her base, Rani’s work is explorative and experimental, telling stories about her home city of Medan.
