The one thing I, Kimberly, like about the ghost town, Rhyolite, is the train depot. My Dad worked for the C&O railroad for 35 years and one of my memories is going into the yard, getting on the Caboose and blowing the train horn. I still have that wonderful memory today.

Back in the day, Rhyolite was serviced by three railroads: the Las Vegas & Tonopah, the Tonopah & Tidewater, and the Bullfrog-Goldfield.

The Las Vegas & Tonopah Railroad laid one mile of track per day, then two miles of track per day, in its hurry to connect Rhyolite with the outside world. The first train from the Las Vegas & Tonopah entered Rhyolite at 7 p.m. on December 14, 1906, with about 100 passengers.

It was a big deal for a young mining town to be serviced by one railroad, but three railroads were almost unheard of in the history of Nevada. By 1907, the Las Vegas & Tonopah alone was hauling 50 freight cars into town per day. The large volume of freight required a large depot to handle it.
In September 1907, the Las Vegas & Tonopah began building the depot that you see here. It is constructed of concrete block with a solid concrete foundation in the Mission Revival style.

Today we went in search of Rhyolite ghost town. Just before the ghost town we seen artwork, and I, Kimberly had to stop!

"Just outside of Rhyolite, Nevada, a spectacular ghost town off the road leading to Death Valley, California, a group of prominent Belgian artists, led by the late Albert Szukalski, created a self-described art situation consisting of seven outdoor sculptures that are colossal not only in their scale but in their placement within the vast upper Mojave desert."

Well yesterday's travel day was interesting. Started out with a snowy cold start and ended with a tire blow out on busy 95 in Nevada. Thanking God it wasn't worse. So we will be staying here in Beatty Nevada for a couple days to hopefully find a tire or two so we can finish our last leg of this journey to Quartzsite Arizona, where we will find more adventures to share! It's been an AMAZING summer and fall!!! We sure have been Chasing those Horizons!

There are some new friends here where we are staying. Hoping I can get some photos to share with all of you later. For now, here are a few images of our drive yesterday.

There'd be days like this my Momma said....

This boondocking nomad life isn't always glitz and glam, amazing sunrises and beautiful places. Sometimes, there will just be one of those days....yesterday was one of those days for me, Kimberly.

* Started the day off with being grounded ALL day, again, by father FB, me being too social again๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

* Had an ice pack on my neck most of the day because I was sitting on the floor next to my desk trying to get the cord back in place, I guess I was shaking it too much and my desktop Mac came crashing down on my head and cracked my neck.

* My kitchen sink had a clog

* Went to do some designing on my IPad, it needed recharging.

*It was cold and rainy all day

*Ended the day shutting my frig door a little hard I guess, and the shelf on the door came crashing to the floor along with all it's contents.

So yesterday was just one of those days. With all of that said, I still wouldn't change anything, I love this life! Today is another day.

Now let's see if this post will go through. If you see it, I'm ungrounded!

Walker Lake is a natural lake in the Great Basin in western Nevada. It is 11 mi long and 5 mi wide, in northwestern Mineral County along the east side of the Wassuk Range, about 75 mi southeast of Reno.

Today we "Traveled Through Hell"
Highway 95 aka The California trail.

"Traveling Through Hell" is a Forty-Mile Desert--a barren stretch of waterless alkali wasteland. It was the single-most dreaded section of the entire California Trail from the banks of the Missouri River to California. If possible, it was traveled by night to avoid the great heat during the day.

Starvation for men and animals stalked every mile. A survey made in 1850 showed these appalling statistics: 1061 dead mules, almost 5,000 horses, 3,750 cattle, and 953 graves. The then value of personal property loss was set at $1 million.

A quote from John T. Clapp; July 15, 1850
"Here, indeed, was a picture of misery, which, if I had witnessed before being hardened to scenes of the like character, would have made my heart's blood run cold, and even now the chill of horror ran over me like electricity. Dead horses and oxen, in great numbers, with steaks cut out of their flesh, lay scattered over the land, and men, without a morsel to eat, were begging from wagon to wagon, offering all they had for a little dry bread. The more dishonest, however, were practicing the crafty scheme of theft."

What a horrible way to live on a promise for a better life.....

On the road again!

Yesterday we drove around and seen some of the area landscapes. This one was amazing and I could have stayed here all day. On the edge of the Oregon coast near Cape Perpetua is a huge gaping sinkhole that swallows seawater around it. It's called Thorโ€™s Well, also known as the drainpipe of the Pacific ocean. It is actually a hole in the rock that appears to drain water from the ocean. According to some researchers, the Well probably started out as a sea cave dug out by the waves, before the roof eventually collapsed and created openings at the bottom and top through which the ocean sprays. The huge hole is likely only around 20 feet deep, but it still manages to produce amazing sights. It was amazing to watch!! Watch until the end!

We made it to our Hipcamp destination safe and sound. About 200 miles! No rain today, that was a plus! It was a beautiful drive. We are exhausted so will chat with you all tomorrow. Good night sweet friends!

Well we are stopping for the night. It's been a very rainy stressful day. I don't like traveling in the rain, at least we only drove about 90 miles today.
