Anil Nagar and Saurabh Bansal are the founders of Adda 247. The duo launched Career Power in 2010 to provide offline coaching classes to students. The company gradually became one of the fastest growing and most successful enterprises across the educational industry with a pan-India presence.

The company underwent a significant transition in 2016 when it shifted to an online learning platform under the name Adda247. Plugging the gap with respect to access and quality of education, Adda247 is now India’s leading test prep platform catering to the learning needs of approximately 85 million+ government job aspirants across the country, providing vernacular content at affordable prices.

Adda247 offers online courses for more than 500+ exams in India including UPSC, State PSCs, Banking, SSC, Teaching, Defense, State Exams, JEE, NEET, GATE, and CUET in 12 languages.

In June 2020, India’s IT ministry, under Section 69 of the IT Act, banned 59 apps, including TikTok, ShareIt, UC Browser, Likee, WeChat, and Bigo Live.
The ban created a huge void, and millions of internet users across India–especially in non-metro cities–began looking for alternatives that did the job just as well.

Gurugram-based house of apps Appyhigh was among those who decided to tap the burgeoning demand.

Incorporated by Aneesh Rayancha and Venus Dhuria in 2018, AppyHigh was already in the business of developing utility apps that targeted mass user segments from Tier II cities and beyond. Between July and September 2020, the company launched Share Karo India, Browser Go, and Scanner Go. These three apps have a total of 136 million downloads as of July 2022, and at least 20 million monthly active users (MAUs).

These apps, like many others on Google Play Store two years ago, tried to capture consumers using colours, logos, and a look and feel similar to the banned applications.

Founded by Gargi Vairagare, Rise for Tails initially focused on feeding stray animals. As the numbers rose, the NGO turned into an animal rehabilitation centre.

With an industrialist father, a mother working in the corporate sector, and a sister living in the US, Gargi followed an entirely different route, dedicating herself full-time to helping these needy animals. Gargi believes that every life is precious, be it a human or the little voiceless animals on the streets.

The year-and-a-half-old shelter has a dedicated team of 10 people, including doctors, full-time veterinarians, supervisors, project managers, and caretakers. It also has a 24x7 veterinary mobile clinic on call and a facility of rescue vans.  Rise for Tails also has a sterilisation programme, where it has sterilised over 1,000 dogs and rescued and rehabilitated nearly 3,000 dogs, goats, cows, etc.

Founded by Prathap Bhimasena Rao and Sourabh Kumar in 2016, PotHoleRaja is a social enterprise working to upgrade India's infrastructure via citizen intervention. PotHoleRaja directly works with citizens. Alternatively, it can be commissioned by institutes, social collectives, or even government bodies to undertake large-scale projects.

PotHoleRaja recently introduced GridMats, a patented eco-friendly product made from recycled polypropylene waste. The material is durable and crafted from 100% recycled plastic waste to construct pavements/roads.

Industrial garbage serves as the organisation’s primary supply of recycled plastic. Recycling companies first pick up the trash, then sort and clean it before delivering it to PotHoleRaja's factory in Hosur, a city about 40 kilometres southeast of Bengaluru.

The recycled polypropylene waste, now in a pellet form, is used to make GridMats, a honeycomb structure. Polypropylene is usually used to make buckets, plastic chairs, and the hard plastic found in cars.

GridMats are placed above the bedding layer and packed with different filling options, creating a permanent, flat, high-quality surface in less than half the time, and at 20%-25% cheaper the cost.

Recently, a road in Bengaluru was conducted using over 3,000 kg of recycled plastic that was used in GridMats.

Ablu Rajesh Kumar was just 13 years when he met with an accident at Amritsar Railway Station. His reckless decision to cross the railway tracks in fear of missing the train cost him both his legs, which changed his entire life.

“I was unconscious for nearly 18 hours as a result of the trauma. The doctors told me that I would only be able to walk on crutches or spend the rest of my life on a wheelchair. I was in a lot of pain in the beginning and tried multiple prosthetics. But I vowed to make my weakness my strength and not let the accident keep me from living my life to the fullest,” Ablu recalls.

While losing legs at such an early age posed a challenge for Ablu, it also made him mentally strong. He decided not to give up on his dreams and worked towards his love for dancing with the help of prosthetic legs.

Today, the 25-year-old from Amritsar has come a long way. He is a dancer, choreographer, content creator, and a cyclist.

Recently, on the 15th of August, when the country celebrated Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Ablu rode a bicycle for 1 km holding the Indian National Flag and set a record, proving that he was bigger than his disabilities. This won him a place in the prestigious International Book of Records for ‘the longest distance covered by cycling with prosthetic legs holding the Indian flag’.

In addition to being a full-time content creator and influencer, Ablu has also founded ‘Ablu Rajesh Dance Academy,’ an NGO for the underprivileged kids, where he teaches dance for them.

Trucknetic operates as an online marketplace that connects shippers with carriers. It aims to transport front haul and backhaul loads to ensure zero waste miles for trucks.

The platform comprises two applications: Trucknetic Carrier, for fleet owners and transporters; and Trucknetic Shipper, which caters to individuals, traders, MSMEs, and corporates.

The pain point the startup is solving is the return load problem, which costs the Indian economy up to $50 billion annually. Trucks usually run empty on their way back, which means fuel wastage and higher costs for the carrier and shipper.

Trucknetic aims to reduce empty running and improve asset utilisation to reduce transportation costs and eventually cut the carbon footprint.

The logistics startup provides a one-stop solution for all types of trucks and intra-city, inter-city, and line haul movements across India.
Shippers log on to the app, fill in their movement details such as to and from location, commodity details, and book from the available trucks. They can also avail insurance and credit facilities on the platform.

Ankita Wamburkar, mother to an eight-year-old, wanted to build something on her own. A NIFT Hyderabad graduate, Ankita had varied work experience in the retail industry in products ranging from office stationery to garments, and was working as a concept manager for the company, Pretty Women Fashion.

But, it was fashion jewellery that really intrigued her. “I believed in the words of Coco Chanel, the French fashion icon - costume jewellery is made to make women beautiful,” says Ankita. It was this passion that led her to start Just Peachy in October 2018 in Hyderabad.

The brand presently employs local artisans from cities like Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi and Kolkata to manufacture jewellery. Apart from generating employment for packaging, they also offer internships to NIFT students.

The brand now has over 1200 products in range, with about 100 new designs being added every month. Once sold out, they don’t bring the same designs again.

“Just Peachy is aiming to achieve Rs 25 crore by 2025, and also set up its own jewellery manufacturing unit. We will soon launch other accessories to widen the offerings,” says Ankita.

Turning down a well-paying corporate job in favour of the not-so-certain entrepreneurial career is not uncommon these days. Back in 2007, when the startup culture had not yet become mainstream, it was a huge deal. Most people, even well-wishers and those with industry knowledge, would have advised against taking such a plunge.

For Vineeta Singh, Co-founder and CEO of SUGAR cosmetics, it was no different. All of 23 and fresh out of college, the IIM Ahmedabad graduate had to choose between the comforts of a settled life or the exciting prospects that come with being an entrepreneur. And what she chose is a no brainer.

Turning down a Rs 1 crore pre-placement offer from Deutsche Bank, Vineeta went on to embrace the startup life, setting an example for not only her batchmates but also for an entire generation of entrepreneurs facing a similar dilemma in those days.

30/12/2020

Hailing from a family that has been into manufacturing hospital supplies, Pallav decided to join the family business after his graduation. However, he soon perceived that he was not adding much value to the business that was already established and running successfully. It was at this time he started thinking about the fitness segment and thus, to fill the gap, he founded Boldfit in Bengaluru in January 2019.

Pallav says his primary motive to start Boldfit was to make fitness available for everyone. And so, he started this D2C, health and fitness ecommerce brand to reach directly to the consumers after taking a loan of Rs eight lakh from his father.

The cash was less to set up a whole manufacturing infrastructure and Pallav wasn’t ready to seek any external funding, and so he decided to start small and began with yoga mats.

Pallav realised that if yoga mats are not of good quality, they get worn out easily, and the ones that sustain for long are very expensive. He tapped this segment by contacting a few contract manufacturers to make yoga mats for his brand.

He started selling yoga mats in his close circle and then listed the product on Amazon and was surprised by the response. He says, “I knew there was a gap in the market but didn’t know that it was too much.”

Pallav claims that Boldfit yoga mats last for at least three years.

Starting with just one product, Boldfit now has 30 SKUs across categories including fitness and yoga, nutrition, health and wellness. Out of 30, Pallav says that 17 SKUs were added only in November 2020.

Founded by serial entrepreneur Aditya Vuchi (who’s also founded location intelligence startup Zippr and adtech firm MediaMint), Doosra is built on the concept of cloud telephony.

Doosra offers a 10-digit virtual SIM to users that they can share on any product or service platform or at offline stores for transactional purposes instead of divulging their personal mobile numbers. The free virtual number can also be shared with acquaintances.

The ‘doosra’ number (secondary number) not only safeguards the digital identity of users, but also auto-blocks spam calls and messages and reduces fraud. Doosra does this by using Smart Call filters, which give users the power to choose the calls that can reach their phones.

On the Doosra app, users can create customised lists of ‘Trusted Contacts’ and ‘Trusted Services’. Calls from these numbers are able to bypass the smart filters and get forwarded to the user’s primary number.

All non-trusted numbers are classified as spam and automatically sent to voicemail by the app. Users, however, have the option of calling back any unknown number.

The Doosra number can be shared at grocery stores, pharmacies, car dealerships, restaurants, shopping malls, delivery and ticketing services, dating apps, websites, networking events, and so on.

“Doosra gives you all the benefits of a publicly shareable number without the downsides of telecalling. You can use it everywhere except UPI,” says the founder.

Giottus offers customer support in regional languages Tamil and Telugu, besides Hindi and English.

The two-year-old platform at present allows customers to trade in more than 100 digital currency pairs in three ways: open order book spot exchange, peer-to-peer (P2P) exchange, and simple buy and sell.

In this method, investors transfer INR from their bank account to that of Giottus and buy cryptocurrencies within a minute.

In on the spot exchange, traders exchange cryptocurrencies instantly. Goittus says its “proprietary ordering matching engine” enables customer orders to be “matched instantly”. It also claims to be a leader in Indian rupee (INR) pairs with “one of the most liquid order books in the country”.

For the P2P exchange, Goittus acts as an escrow for digital currencies allowing INR to be transferred directly between traders. This method, the platform says, is preferred by those who trade in large volumes.

27/12/2020

Husain Saify’s Bhopal-based software services startup HackerKernel is one of the few enterprises from a Tier II city to make a mark internationally.

In 2015, Hussain Saify was working in his father’s shoe store and learning how to code as he manned the cash till. Cut to three years later. Hussain, now 21 years old, and having completed a Bachelor of Computer Application degree, runs HackerKernel, one of Bhopal’s leading startups. His software services startup, which was set up with less than Rs 5,000, now boasts revenues of more than Rs 1 crore.

In less than three years, Hussain has built a company that employs 25 engineers who serve more than 200 companies. His clients include Eduzina, Zingfy, and Madcue.

Hussain was an early starter. By the age of 12, he began to learn C++ and HTML on his own. He started out as a freelance web developer in 2015 with a single aim: paying his own internet bills. And when he got an offer to build an ecommerce website for a local brand, he didn’t say no. “My first customer was a local fast-food brand.”

He says the outlet served very good burgers, but the owner was unaware of the internet’s potential. Hussain suggested creating a website and adding a narrative to help many more people discover the eatery. His first paycheque - Rs 5,000 - was the capital Hussain invested in HackerKernel. Working in his dad’s store, he began learning technologies like Javascript and Android development; he also started writing programming blogs and making YouTube tutorials on “programming”.

27/12/2020

Manipur-based entrepreneur Ragesh Keisham started CC Tea in 2011 to make lemongrass tea, and help his family overcome its financial crisis. Today, Ragesh owns and manages hundreds of acres of lemongrass fields in Imphal.

In 2008, Imphal-based Ragesh Keisham’s family was crushed under a mountain of debt and had to sell-off nearly everything to treat his adopted sister. However, she eventually lost her battle to leukaemia.

With the Manipuri family living hand-to-mouth, Ragesh needed to find a way out. He tried his hands at various businesses, including data digitisation and supplying bamboo saplings to Uttarakhand, but with no success.

He needed a venture that would generate significant income. But any business that would require electricity was out of the question since it was available for only three to four hours a day in the region.

The only possible outlet Ragesh saw was agriculture. It was under these dire circumstances that he came up with an out-of-the-box idea to make tea out of lemongrass.

In 2011, he launched the CC Tea brand under the parent company SuiGeneris Agronomy, which he set up in 2010.

25/12/2020

Raksha Shenoy started Tapas Foods to promote guilt-free, healthy snacking options. The Udupi-based startup operates two brands — Tapas and Nummy.

Led primarily by an enthusiastic group of rural women, Tapas Foods tries to collaborate with farmers and local communities to make natural superfoods like makhana or Fox Nuts available across the world. They select farms that grow makhana or fox nuts.

At present, Tapas Foods makes available these makhanas in many forms — plain, roasted, and as ready-to-eat flavoured makhanas in cheesy, spicy, and tangy flavours in small, medium, and large packs, among others.

While Raksha had a great career in Human Resources, she wanted to do something of her own. Her father Gopinath Shenoy is a serial entrepreneur in a small town in Udupi, which also contributed to her pursuing entrepreneurship.
