The Basketball Association meet Perry Lakes Hawks Basketball in Round 4 of the NBL1 West and are looking for their first win of the season. The sit near the top of the ladder so I wasn’t going to be an easy task but started off strong, Dequan Abrom hitting his first 2 from deep in a row. But proved why they are a force on the court and went on an 11-0 run towards the end of the first to secure a 12 point lead at the first break. In the second both teams were trading runs. First the went on a bit of a run but then the turned it on and climbed back into the game. Only to give it back towards the end of the quarter and finally bring it back down to 9 points at the half. They tried to keep the momentum going in the second half but about halfway through the Hawks went on another run and this time, it was decisive. At the end of the third they had a 27 point lead on . And Perry Lakes was only getting started, midway through the fourth they extended the difference to 40 points. That’s when coach Mark Utley conceded defeat and emptied his bench. Ray Turner played well and finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds.

After missing a game last weekend, the Mandurah Basketball Association Women were eager to start strong against the Perry Lakes Hawks Basketball in Round 4 of the NBL1 West. And they did, opening up a gap early in the quarter. But the managed to close that gap before the first break and even took over the lead briefly at the start of the second. But the wasn’t impressed and with some good defense they jumped up and over the and took a 9 point lead into half time. Carly Boag and Sarah Toeina really took advantage of their length and they led everyone in scoring at the half. fought hard in the third but a big 3 by Rachel Halleen towards the end grew ’s lead a bit more. Neither team managed to really grab hold of this game in the final quarter and we saw some tired players after big minutes for ’s starters. A low-scoring quarter meant that the win was in the bag. Toeiana had 24 points and goes home with the Anzac Medal. Boag finished up with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Casey Milo finished with 14 points after a very efficient evening from the floor.

In Round 7 of the WAFL Women, Peel Thunder welcomed Subiaco Football Club Inc. to . needed a win to stay in contact with the top 4 but it was that dominated the opening quarter. With 2 quick goals and 3 behinds, they took a 15 point lead at the first break. But the fought back and within 5 minutes in Q2 they had brought the gap back to 3 points and only 2 at half time. We were anticipating to continue their effort in Q3 but it were the that kicked the goals this time around. At the break, the difference was back up to 21 points. And early in the final quarter, clinched the game with 2 goals in the first 3 minutes. Peel had completely run out of steam by then and Subi took advantage to play out the game.

The Peel Thunder Men travel to to take on the South Fremantle Football Club in Round 3 of the WAFL. With 2 wins under their belt, could start this game with confidence but it was that dominated the opening quarter, kicking 5 goals and going into the first break with a 22 point lead. The tried to fight back in the second and got a couple of chances but their biggest problem of the first half was being accurate on their scoring shots, they only kicked 2 goals out of 10 scoring shots. The on the other hand had no problem scoring and were up to 8 goals at half time. And immediately increased their lead in the third with 2 ridiculously quick goals. When kicked at third goal before 10 minutes were up, you could say that the game was over for . They tried at the end of the third, kicking 3 goals, but South Fremantle had no trouble with Peel in the end.

In Round 4 of the Football West State League, Mandurah City FC travels to to take on UWA Nedlands F.C.. The were dominant in the opening 25 minutes, but couldn’t find a gap in the defence. The post, the crossbar and the goalkeeper kept from an opening goal. We had to wait until the half hour mark until they finally found the back of the net. Not much later, was reduced to 10 men but Leigh Griffiths magically doubled the score anyway. A great save by Alfie Brincat made sure that went into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead. But it didn’t take long, only a handful of minutes into the second half, got their goal and all of sudden this game changed completely. decided to fold back and defend their lead. They did quite well for the majority of the second half but with 10 minutes left, found a hole in the wall and got their equaliser. And they went up and over minutes later. A disappointing ending for the Dolphins after a hard fought game.

The Peel Thunder Men meet the Perth Football Club in today in Round 2 of the WAFL competition. Even though started the game stronger, ended up in the lead quite quickly because they proved a bit more accurate in front of . After a low-scoring opening quarter, had a 10 point lead. And they continued their dominance in the second, opening up the gap to a 3 goal deficit. The looked for a minute like they were getting themselves back into the contest, but Sebit Kuek, with his 2nd of 4 for the afternoon, tilted the game back into the favour of the . The lead was 21 points at the half time break. The game turned into a slugfest in the third, with either side struggling to find the goals. Peel racked up 6 behinds, failing to open up the gap substantially before the final quarter. But the Thunder were not going to give this game away and absolutely DOMINATED the final quarter. A massive win for Peel in the end, and the Demons are lucky that Peel has been so inaccurate with their scoring opportunities or this game could have been worse.

The Peel Thunder Women welcomed Fremantle Football Club to for Round 6 in the WAFL Women comp. The are third on the ladder so a win would propel up the standings. But they struggled in the opening quarter to put the under pressure and were lucky a couple of times that the bounced in their advantage. kicked a and a few to take a 9 point lead into Q2. But luck ran out quickly for and they had to watch the Sharks extend their lead easily to 37 points at the half. The sparked some hope with a quick goal by Ebonee Hardie in the third but the Sharks were quick to take back control. Halfway through the quarter, Sophie Johansen put in a bid for Goal of the Week after a massive rush, great hands to knock the footy forward and a great kick to finish it off. We needed something incredible from Peel in the final quarter, but East Freo had this game locked up. Bridey Jackman added some colour to the game and kicked her first goal of the season, halfway through but all in all, Peel had no chance today against the Sharks.

Our latest episode of the Mandurah Sports Show is now online.

Peel Thunder pulled off a miracle in their opening game in the WAFL against East Fremantle Football Club. Mandurah City FC finished on top against Fremantle City Football Club in the Football West State League. The Mandurah Basketball Association split their games against the South West Slammers in the NBL1 West. Peel Lightning Netball Club is still looking for their first win and the Mandurah Storm Rugby League Club are looking for Committee Members for the upcoming season.

The Peel Thunder opened their WAFL season against East Fremantle Football Club today in . They started their preseason games really strong and today was no different, the barely saw the in the opening 10 minutes. But a 8-0 lead was not enough for and slowly started to grow in the game. By the end of the quarter, they had brought the difference back down to 3 points and they kept the momentum early in the second, taking over the lead from the . didn’t have an answer straight away but kept within striking distance until the Sharks kicked a late goal and extended their lead at the half to 15 points. The third quarter was a battle, with only a few chances on both ends. The Sharks proved a little more accurate than Peel and took a 21 point lead into the final quarter. Four quick goals by Peel within 15 minutes brought them back in front in this game and the crowd went wild. It took blood, sweat and tears but the Thunder managed to hold on for the win. Peel had 7 different players kicking goals tonight and Will Brodie led the field with 37 .

New recruit Issac Abergut was thrown straight into the starting line up for the Mandurah Basketball Association Men, because no Ray Turner tonight, in their Round 2 NBL1 West game against the South West Slammers. were a bit sloppy in the opening quarter with quite a few turnovers, allowing the to open up a little gap early on. Kai Daniels left early, looks like he got hit in the stomach and did not return to the court. Despite Dequan Abrom and Byron Pearson giving it their best, the were not able to close the gap early in the second and the went into halftime with a 9 point lead. The biggest problem for again was that shot from deep, only making 2 from 15 in the first half. Both teams were evenly matched throughout the third but the Magic got the slight upper hand towards the end of the quarter. And they kept the momentum going in the final quarter. Within a minute, they had brought the difference back to 1 point. The game stayed agonisingly close, mainly because Abrom and Pearson finally found their range. Together they put up a show in the last quarter, making 15 points between the 2 of them. But too many personal fouls proved the difference in the end, and the Slammers took out this one. Abrom had an incredible game and finished with 28 points, Pearson had 21.

Mandurah City FC is playing under the lights in the Night Series Final replay against Fremantle City Football Club in the Football West State League. was out for revenge and about 10 minutes into the game, they hit the crossbar from distance. Five minutes later had their turn and Leigh Griffiths made his first of the season, an easy tip in. As much as pushed back, managed to hold on to the lead until half time. When the got a penalty, 10 minutes into the second half of Griffiths took his responsibility and doubled his tally for the evening. But couldn’t enjoy for long, with getting one back almost immediately. The feel of the game changed straight away, with both teams becoming a lot more aggressive. Neither side really got another good chance at goal until, out of the blue, hit the post from up close with 5 minutes left to play. And only a minute later, Joe O’Brien was sent deep, outplayed his defender and finished beautifully. Again, Fremantle got one back quite quickly, but it wasn’t enough to shake the Dolphins. An important win for , against one of the leaders on the ladder.

It was clear from the start of this game that the South West Slammers were not going to put up a fight against the Mandurah Basketball Association Women in Round 2 of the NBL1 West. started off an a 8-0 run and extended their lead to 3 for 17 throughout the quarter. And they continued their run in the second quarter, the had no answer and only managed to score 13 points in the first half, had more steals than that. The were able to clear their bench early and give plenty of minutes to the younger players. The Magic played out the second half at the pace of the , allowing for an entertaining half but it never turned into a real contest. Mandurah had 5 players in double figures, including 2 coming off the bench. Sarah Toeaina had a double double and Casey Milo finished with 11 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds and 7 steals. A great game for Mandurah but if we had to pick on one thing for the women tonight, it was the amount of unnecessary personal fouls. Something to work heading into their next game.

The Peel Thunder Women couldn’t start their Round 4 WAFL Women game against the West Perth Football Club any worse. They allowed 3 goals and 4 behinds in the opening quarter and couldn’t get anywhere near the goal. was a lot more aggressive at the start of the second and it didn’t take long for Kira Phillips to find Ebonee Hardie in front of goal, and she kicked her first of the game. It looked like was ready to take control of the game but was not finished. With another goal and a behind, they increased their lead to 23 at the half. The were the stronger team coming out of the dressing rooms and dominated for the majority of the third. The couldn’t get through West Perth's defense and the players got quite frustrated on the field. The final quarter did count for anything, but we did see Peel kick a second goal, thanks to Kira Phillips. One to forget quickly and focus on the next game.

The Mandurah Basketball Association were in for a long night against the Goldfields Giants in their NBL1 West Round 1 matchup in . The were always one step behind and just didn’t seem strong enough to handle the physically tough . It resulted in a 16 point lead for after the opening quarter. played better in the second and managed to keep pace with the Giants, we saw some nice moves by Kai Daniels, who finished the game with 14 points, but overall the struggled defensively and couldn’t get anything to drop from behind the arc. At the half, the difference was 14 points. The third quarter was very evenly matched until Ray Turner had to leave the game with an injury. Turner was crucial for the Magic up to that point and finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Giants ran away towards the end of the quarter and got a bit of help from the referees as well. The Magic started the final quarter more than 20 points down and it didn’t take long for that to turn into 30 points. Heads started to drop and none of the shots fell for the Magic. The Giants on the other hand, had no issues scoring and cruised to the win.

It’s Round 1 in the NBL1 West and the Mandurah Basketball Association made the 8 hour bus trip to to take on the Goldfields Giants in what will be an exciting game. The started off strong and took an early lead but as the first quarter progressed, the slowly took control of the game and took a 3 point lead into the break. But started the 2nd really strong and turned the deficit into a lead quite quickly thanks to Rachel Halleen and Sarah Toeaina. The managed to increase the lead throughout the quarter to 7 points at the break, mainly because they started to grab more rebounds and some quick ball movement. The Magic put up a shooting clinic early in the third, making 6 consecutive shots from deep between 4 different players, and they took the lead out to 19 points by the end of the third. Mandurah had no trouble playing out the final quarter and took the win. Plenty of players with honours tonight: Rachel Halleen shot 5 of 9 from deep and finished with 17 points, Carly Boag and Sarah Toeiana had a double double each and Casey Milo had 10 assists and 7 points. A great start to their season.

Mandurah City FC travels to for Round 2 of the Football West State League 1 to take on Murdoch University Melville Football Club. Both teams were equally matched in the first 10 minutes of the game and neither side managed to get a shot off on target. When got close, decided to fight back immediately and Joe O’Brien opened the score after a great rush by Hamish Van Dieken. He was crucial for the early in the game and when he was taken down inside the penalty area, John Baird had a unique opportunity to double the score, but the goalie managed to keep it out. Unsurprisingly, that was the turning point in the first half, and took over the momentum in the game. After a lot of pushing and some great saves by Alfie Brincat, they finally got their equaliser, about 15 minutes before the break. They slowed down a bit after that but could not take advantage. Just before halftime, scored a second goal, a beautiful little lob over Brincat. had to fight back after the break. And they did, getting close a couple of times but it was Melville that kicked the first goal of the second half and increased their lead. When got another penalty, it was the perfect chance to get back into the game but O’Brien couldn’t get past the goalkeeper either. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back for the Dolphins, a tough loss in a winnable game.
